Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in, I appreciate all of you! This video is a checklist of things I would ask or suggest to a friend if they were trying to figure out whether a Cayman was the right car for their budget, lifestyle and personality. So I hope it's helpful if that's the spot you're in. This video is not a checklist for how to find a good value Cayman if you've already decided to buy one. That could potentially be a different video in the future. This video was already long enough as it is and I think I lack the technical expertise and knowledge of the current Cayman market to write a checklist that would effectively help people find a good deal on a Cayman right now. However, if you would be interested in that kind of video as well, let me know in the comments. If there is enough demand, I would definitely be willing to do the research required to put together such a checklist and add my personal experience spin to it. Thanks again and I'll see you again in two weeks!

Mechonomist ADVICE NEEDED - I’ve found a cayman to buy. 2011 model and has 20k km’s on the clock. (Hardly driven). The car hasn’t been driven or started for 2 years. What do I need to do to get the car back on the road and running again? Can I just charge the battery and start it? Any help or assistance appreciated. I haven’t owned a porsche before

@@admiral7922 Hey buddy, I ain't no Porsche expert but I would STRONGLY suggest that you best get like an EXPERIENCED mechanic to at least check it out 'n inspect EVERYTHING first before ya even consider to buy it... Cuz if ya don't, you could prolly end up spendin' $$$ on expensive-ass parts 'n repairs later on down the road if somethin' goes SOUTH. I've heard that cars (especially high-performance vehicles) that have been sittin' IDLE fer many years (very low milage) are not really ideal purchases, cuz lotsa BUILDUP could incur inside if the previous owner(s) haven't really been drivin' or runnin' it much. If they dun run it all that often; then chances are that they prolly also haven't been followin' up on all the routine checkups 'n maintenance procedures which is absolutely necessary on ANY car. Good luck on yer car search!

I've taken in on multiple long trips and it is the most comfortable car I've ever driven long distance... My longest drive was 1300 miles and I wasn't sore at all... That thing about depreciation of 1k a year sounds like something a dealer would tell you. I have been tracking 987 prices for the last year and I have watched the S models increase in value by something like %10. You might find your base model holding its value better than you think.

Good advice here. Glad you recommended finding a shop first. Talking to a shop that works on them can 1) get good info on a model 2) set you up for a pmi before buying, and 3) start building that loyalty. When I was in my 20's, got a Ferrari 308 with that as a start. Knew what I was getting into, knew i could trust who was going to advise and work on it. Keep up the good work.

Fair descriptions of many people perception of Porsche owners. I find there are two types of owners; the enthusiast and the dentist that just wanted a "cool", pricey (looking) car. So maybe some owners deserve the reputation. Us enthusiast just have to live with the fallout.

I would suggest you look for a really clean 2009 (and up) and avoid any potential engine bearing issue (and get PDK versus tiptronic if you want automatic). An 09 is usually just a few thousand dollars more than say an 08 or 07. Oil changes are cheap but some other service that you are suppose to do per owners manual (over time and miles) is not and may be a rude awakening when you need to do those services.
@threebigideas3488
@threebigideas3488 5 лет назад
I like that you put yourself out there and put numbers on things...and since it's a video for general audience I think it is good. But I would also caution millennials to look beyond the month-to-month (netflix style) cost. Think about opportunity cost and the longer term. The 5 year cost of ownership for this possibly unreliable car is 30-50k between insurance, maintenance, gas etc. Is there any other investment you would rather put that money towards? Do you have a 6 month emergency fund in place? If you make 6 figures and have no other investment ideas just understand that you are likely stuck in the rat race chasing luxury goods or if you make a great income and like your job--buy it and enjoy. Depends what you value.

I think a somewhat important thing about cayman verses any other 2 door is that it's not a front engine car so just basic oil changes I think are slightly more complicated and would probably cost more. And maybe some shops are a little more basic and wont do it properly because it takes a little more work.

Where I live, if you can afford almost any new cheaper car, you can afford a used Cayman. Cayman's are 20-40k depending on year. That's Mustang, Camaro range, or used mid-top trim level truck range. I personally want a Cayman because I want a 2 seater that's a great deal for the price that I can use on weekends in the summer when I'm not going places with my family, since I have an F150 Supercrew for family outings and daily driving, and I have a winter beater Explorer to use on snow days to keep the salt off my F150. And depreciation isn't a concern since I plan on keeping the car for a long time, decades likely.
@rodrigosanroman5858
@rodrigosanroman5858 4 года назад
That is not true. A lot of people fall into that mindset that if you can afford a new Honda or something like that you can afford a used Porsche. Completely wrong. I know tons of people with new cars that would be buried in debt if they bought a used Porsche. You're completely forgetting about maintenance and high cost repairs. Get a dent in a new mustang boom 300 will cover that or heck you can buy a new bumped and won't even be all that much. On a Porsche you're lucky to be around $1,000. Mustang 50 bucks tops on oil changes. Porsche closer to 300-400. Tires way more.... ect. I think you get the picture. Also insurance eats me away personally.

Your point about the manual transmission part doesn't apply to all. 987.2 does have PDK option which isn't as good as future PDKs, but is miles better than tip-tronic transmission and compelling enough to make you consider over manual transmission, for various reasons to lot of people. btw keep up the videos. In the market for Cayman right now and your videos helped me understand a bit more about the car.

My credit score is 641(dealer told me)on experian and the dealer surprisingly approved me. I got it for zero down and the car is a 2007 Porsche Cayman with 41k miles on it. 20.5k is what its listed for. Funny enough i got denied for a 10 mazda rx8 r3 for 13k because the dealer in the state of washington doesnt finance out of state. I make 32k a year currently as a part time LVN and part time caregiver. I work about 38 hours a week with both jobs combined. My payments are 603 a month for 4 years aka 48 month loan term. Also the main reason i got this car is because its manual and the budget performance. I must say this isn't my first purchase of a car. Im 32 and have 4 paid off cars on my credit history. Im sure that played a part in me getting approved. Im looking forward to modding mine for track racing. I like your vids bruh. Keep up the great work.

So we’ll talk about money and affording one, and then straight onto finance. Honestly, if you have to take finance out on a car then you can’t afford it. Save up and buy it outright, that way you’ll at least get a deal on it. Finance is just overpaying and dumb advice.

I'll have a good credit score and every month I save around $1,550-1,700 in cash I don't even use since that money is strictly for a car (not bragging but I save money VERY well)... I'm obviously planning to either buy it in full or pay it almost damn near full in cash. So payments won't be a problem for me. Do you think that much money I save per month could hold me down with an older cayman? Like the 2006-10 models? I usually find good ones between $20-26K.

Nope ...I could pay cash for a new 911 but instead I bought a used Miata say ....pretty sad huh? Don't get me wrong it is an awesome Miata 2018 Club with only 10k miles...but still I am a bit ashamed...not that I didn't try to find a great deal on a Cayman....I just wanted one I knew was well taken care of and was not abused and not over priced. Hard to find such so I gave in when such a Miata presented itself before a Cayman did .... Once I decided it was time to buy a sports car I wasjust too impatient to drive SOMETHING fun asap lol....but hey now I can relax and keep looking. for the right Porsche...who says I can't own both a Miata and a Cayman? ...But will I even want to drive the Miata with a Cayman sitting there??

depreciation is not as bad for luxury imports, for any porsche of any year, if kept in good condish, you can basically guarantee the value won't go lower than ~20k CAD, often times, depending on the model and year, the value actually goes up. It's a completely different world than with mass manufactured vehicles, which is basically like throwing money out the window....

Never get a loan for a depreciating asset.
@Mechonomist
@Mechonomist 5 лет назад
This is sound financial advice. However - and please forgive me for being pedantic - there are cases where it makes sense to borrow for a depreciating asset. For example, if you are taking out a loan for a capital asset that will increase your income/revenue. Like a construction company taking out a loan for a new machine - it may be a depreciating asset, but they will be able to increase productivity and finish more jobs in less time. In that case, it may make even more sense to finance the depreciating asset as opposed to purchasing it outright because the decreased liquidity from paying the full price up front may mean they cannot advertise their new and improved capability, or hire a trained operator to run the machine. For individuals looking to buy a car, if you replace "revenue" with "utility" there are lots of cases where taking out a loan on a car makes sense. If you're a parent who needs to taxi kids around and you want to maximize crash safety, then it would make sense to finance a large, safe vehicle even if you don't have the cash to buy it outright. Or if you just really really love driving sports cars more than anything else and you have a stable income but you're not good at saving, then a car loan can be a useful forced savings mechanism - as long as you understand and accept that you will be paying a premium for it. For this channel, I knew that the right car could help increase my revenue to the point where the car would effectively pay for itself. It was a calculated risk, but I knew that if I put enough money down I could always re-sell the car without being under water on the loan in case the risk didn't pay off. I also just get so much enjoyment out of driving it that, to me, it would be worth the interest I'm paying even if I didn't make any money off of it. All that being said, it is still a good general rule of thumb to avoid borrowing money to buy things that decrease in value. Again, I am not a financial adviser, so I may be completely off, but I do enjoy finance and economics enough that it's hard for me to pass up replying to a good comment that has room for expansion.

unless you're into real estate pretty much anything is a depreciating asset.

John Grieve almost EVERY “asset” is subject to depreciation. Sinking money into anything you think will make you money is a gamble.

Actually, women care if a guy has enough money to buy them Gucci bags and Louboutain shoes. It helps if you're a rapper, rock, star, actor. Goldigging women love to party.

I love how you just have to inject politics into the last few seconds of your video. Way to go on ruining a legit and interesting Cayman analysis. I'm completely done with your videos now...never again!
