The Desktop CNC Machine That Time Forgot (Unboxing & Assembling Something I Bought 2+ Years Ago)

Some time ago, in great excitement and anticipation, I bought one of those '3018 desktop cnc mill' machines from somewhere, but I never assembled it... until now.
(in case you're wondering, I bought it, then fell ill, and by the time I had fully recovered, there were other projects on my mind - this thing sat on a shelf, gathering dust)
The thumbnail? Why yes! I love This Old Tony! / @thisoldtony
The machine I have is something very similar to this one: www.banggood.com/Offline-Vers...
If you're in the same predicament as I was (i.e: you have the machine, but no instructions), Here's how I recommend to assemble (after unpacking and cleaning away any metal swarf like mine had inside the protective film):
Identify the key parts:
The base will be constructed from the two rectangular-section metal rails, plus the two long thin black plastic pieces (note these have small protruding feet on the bottom edges), plus the shorter set of linear round rods, plus the shorter of the two threaded rods.
The gantry will be constructed from the two square section metal rails, plus the other two plastic pieces, plus the longer linear rods and threaded rod
The bed comprises the silver metal plate (the side with 3 slots is the underside) and the grey linear bearings and screw carrier
You will have two different lengths of M5 machine screws:
Shorter screws: for attaching the linear bearings to the machine bed
Longer screws: for assembly of the rest of the structure
Sequence of assembly (based on my trial and error - rationale further below):
1. Assemble the linear bearings and screw carrier onto the underside of the silver bed plate - put the screws through the holes, loosely fit the large channel-nuts, then slide the parts into the channels and tighten them finger-tight
2. Assemble 3 sides of the base - take the long plastic piece with the large central hole and bolt through it into the ends of the two rectangular-section metal rails
3. Take the two plastic gantry support pieces and affix them to the outside of the two metal base rails (the support with the large circular hole goes on the right side) - bolt through the holes and add the small channel-nuts, then slide these carefully into the channels on the base sides, then tighten finger-tight
4. Add the front of the base, bolting through into the two side rails
5. Turn over the assembled machine
6. Thread the two linear rails through their bearings on the underside of the silver bed plate, then fit these rails into place in the frame of the base (bolting into the ends of the rails through the holes in front and back of the base
7. Feed the shorter threaded rod through the hole in the back of the base, screwing it through the screw carrier, adding the spring and brass anti-backlash nut as you go through - keep driving this rod until it goes into the bearing on the front rail
8. Add one of the coupling cylinders to one of the stepper motor shafts, then fit this motor to the back of the base, coupling it to the threaded rod. The connector plug for the motor needs to be oriented so it will be on top when the machine is the right way up
9. Fully tighten the bolts holding the linear bearings on the bed plate
10. Turn the assembled machine right side up
11. Push the longer linear rails rods through the Z axis assembly and fit these rods in place between the gantry supports
12. Add the long threaded rod through the Z axis assembly, via the larger hole in the gantry support (adding a spring and anti-backlash nut)
13. Add the stepper motor to the right gantry support, coupling it to the end of the threaded rod
14. Add the two gantry structural rails between the two supports. Slide two of the small channel nuts into each rail before you do this.
15. Slide the gantry so that the spindle motor will be exactly halfway between the front and back of the base (most photographs of the assembled machine show this nearer the back, but that's wrong). Fully tighten the bolts holding the gantry supports to the sides of the base.
16. Add the spindle motor
17. Bolt the PCB to the back of the gantry rails, using the plastic standoffs, and bolting into the channel nuts you added in step 14. Don't overtighten these.
18. Wire up the stepper motors and spindle motor
19. Double check all structural bolts for tightness
Rationale for this assembly sequence:
Channel nuts in the structure need to be slotted in while there is still an open end of the channel
Channel nuts in the bed plate are really hard to engage with the bolts if you try to do it after fitting the bearings to the rods
If the stepper motors are fitted before the threaded rods, it's really hard to get the threaded rods into place
The gantry structural rails just get in the way if they are added too early.

I have a suggestion for a project. Make an Emergency Stop Button for the machine. Even if it only stops the stepper motors. It could save you a lot of stress to know that all you have to do is slap the big red button, instead of trying to find the right icon to click on when something goes wrong.

If you want to make your own milling bits research "D Bits" they are relatively easy to make. Also look into "speeds and feeds" and "tooth loading." Tooth loading is especially important, if you try to remove too little material the tool will burnish rather than cut.
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 3 года назад
Thanks for that - I would not have guessed the detail about burnishing - I guess that's where limitations of the machine really come into play with smaller motors etc; you can't just take it slower
@awatt
@awatt 3 года назад
@@AtomicShrimp A cutting tool will never have a completely sharp edge. It will always have a radius however small so if the spindle speed is too high the tool rubs rather than cuts and generates a lot of heat.

Those mini disc! My opinions on it, they just add blank disks in the box to avoid complains about lack of instructions, and fool ppl. If it was floppy discs, I can easily understand that the support go bad during storage, but discs, not so much. Btw these were recognize as blank, if something was writed on it at some point and degrade overtime, computer will see it at corrupt data of some sorts. So fair play to Chinese guys for the fool. Anyway, cool project and very impatient to see other cnc stuff

CDs and DVDs, especially super cheap ones, had a tendency to go mouldy between the layers. You would see off colour spots, even holes, being eaten into the discs.. also, the printing was super bad and sometimes paint flaked off the discs too

I've got rewritable discs that I know were once good, that will no longer read - despite no obvious visible sign of damage, and despite being stored fairly carefully inside a closed cupboard for a few years. It's possible that these little mini CDs were never any good, but on a CDR, you can see where tracks have been written, and I can see that on these discs, so maybe they were always garbage since they first went in the box, but they're not just blank new discs

Put the head all the way to one side and move the work all the way toward you with the protector on before messing with the work. Or better yet, do not install the bit until your work is secure and completely remove it before removing the work. Only handle it with the protector on and it can still get you through the protector if you're not careful. I learned this the hard way after four stitches in my finger for a cut that looked unreal at first. It didn't bleed at all for several seconds, seemed like minutes later. I reached under the bit for some reason I can't remember and poked the back of my finger with it, which wasn't all that bad and I didn't even feel it much. My reflexes disagreed with that and I jerked my hand back slicing from my middle knuckle to my furthest knuckle. My hand only stopped because it hung up on my knuckle. And yes, of course, the spindle was off. It cut me like that with the machine off.

if you have a Reprap shield, you could use that instead, there are enough custom firmwares to do everything you want with it. This is also a very populair CNC for those that are just starting the hobby

I've got a very similar CNC in a box at home. I did assemble it, but within a minute of turning it on there was a loud pop and smoke coming out of the machine. Looked like a capacitor went. Haven't put it to much use since

I bought a similar machine a while ago, but the offline controller can only handle VERY short G-codes and when I use it connected directly to a computer it just stops the program in the middle of making something and resently it started randomly destroying stepper motor drivers. I‘ve been trying to get it running for over a year now.

I have a lot of old Chinese data manuals on those disks some about 15 years old and they still work, I suspect they were never written which was very common. Oh and I would have loved to put that together without instructions a perfect puzzle.

Most microswitches have 3 pins: Input, Contact Output and useful for your machine Output Non-Contact. Put the positive power from the board (to the Y axis motor) to the microswitch input, connect the other end of the wire cut to use the microswitch to the Non-Contact Output. Then if the microswitch is hit, power to the motor will go away. It's not ideal as once it hits the switch you'll have to pass power somehow to it to have it move backward. Many ways you could correct that with a relay, but if the safety of the parts and motors are of concern, it could/may/will do the job just well enough.

I think the board has inputs for proper limit switches

I find you facinating to watch as you remind me so much of my grandad (no offence as I don't mean age). What I mean is he was a tinkerer. He thoroughly enjoyed tinkering with bits and bobs and had an interest in lots of subject matters which I feel made him a very interesting man. You wouldn't happen to also have an interest in fishing, welding, wood turning, boats or allotments do you?

I have been tempted to get one of these for prototyping PCBs with. I'm sure you know but just for my own piece of mind, I'll say it anyway - never use those glasses to protect yourself against lasers, they are worse than useless.

Appreciate that - yeah. I built an enclosure for my laser engraver (which also helps with the fumes as well as eye safety)

Very interesting video thank you. My concern when buying from China is any exorbitant import duty suddenly and randomly attached to the purchase by our HMC department in the UK. Can you remember if you had to pay such a charge and what it was percentage wise. This happened with my first purchase of a 3D printer and was a shock adding a considerable amount to a fairly cheap purchase from China. Same applies to USA imports!

Aluminium actually goes quite ok with this machine. Depth of cut around 0.2mm per pass at about 50mm per minute. I found it best to use a helical cut and a 1mm end-mill. It takes a while but it is definitely possible.
