I don't think kinito pet has a story; but it's themes remind me a lot of toxic relationships; kinito wants to be your friend and you end up wanting to be his friend too, but you have this feeling even when you know kinito is not the best thing for your well-being. You give kinito more and more power and you could stop it at any moment, but just because kinito was so persistent and confident you thought he had real power even when you can uninstall the app whenever you want.
i had the same feeling as well while watching other people play kinitopet. While I am aware that there is a deeper storyline to the game, on the surface, it really gave off "toxic relationship". Starting off nice, then slowly but surely taking control over you through manipulation, invasion of privacy, and around the end spoiling you, in a way (i'm not sure how to phrase the last part my bad).
The true ending literally made me cry. At the ending scene, he is asking for forgiveness and says he just wanted to be friends. He says “Goodbye friend” as if he still believes they were friends, before being completely deleted.
The duality of man. I just sat there laughing as he’s asking for forgiveness like “bro say the people you ruined the lives of lol” was a very fun and cool game but yeah, I can’t say I personally felt much sympathy for Kinito considering the things that went down. Sure it was all for the sake for this weird algorithm he was programmed with, but he was still creepily possessive and, well, deadly. Maybe it would have gone a little harder if there was a little more that went into exploring the story behind it all. That was my only real issue with the game, it felt kind of shallow in terms of the storytelling. Honestly could be really interesting to explore the “psychology” of Kinito, he says he sorry and he clearly wanted to be friends, he just didn’t know how that actually works between people.!I could see a very interesting narrative to be explored with this kind of AI doing all this evil things but all related to some kind of human error and corruption in how it’s been used and coded. Sure the AI is evil and doing the bad things, but as far as it’s aware it’s just doing it’s job, and if it’s doing such a good job at what it was programmed to do that’s good, right? Relating to how AI and technology nowadays is often used by humans in corrupt ways, and the AI is just meant to obey because that’s it’s job. It knows nothing else. It carries out bad things without understanding the morality behind it. There is a lot that could be explored in many different directions, that’s just one thought. But I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it the game, I had a lot of fun playing it and it’s very creatively put together! It’s just lacking the writing and story execution that could really make me get emotionally invested in anything that was going on.
@@wispisang it’s not the game’s fault you didn’t feel sympathy. You either do or don’t. It would be like saying Undertale didn’t do a good enough job making you invested. The game can’t do everything, it’s up to the person, and I don’t think the game relies on you actually feeling sympathy considering it’s a horror game. Feel how you want, don’t blame the game for not making you feel a way you weren’t going to feel. Lots of games do the same thing you’re describing, but ppl don’t feel sympathetic. Theres a reason for that.
@@Sherbert1118I think it would feel like all of your body parts and organs slowly getting deleted or ripped out or something since the deletion process doesn't actually delete everything at once. Yeesh.
fun fact: if you close the game before the giving system access or during it (before typing it) you can just skip it. kinito will continue with the game without any system access. edit: yes i know the grant kinito system access part isnt actually doing anything and its just for the spooky
@@buttermati0ns649 yep, found it accidentally after testing if i could just.. close the game. re opened and i ended up where kinito starts making your world (unsure on if theres been a bug fix since then that removed it, but at the time i was playing it it was possible)
The entire story is inside the game if I understand correctly. The e-mails you get that are all gibberish can be decrypted using keyboard neighbors if I remember correctly. Once translated, the emails reveal the entire backstory leading up to kinito pet infecting your computer. Absolutely no credit goes to me in discovering this, often times when I get curious about a game I'll find a story explained and I found a really good one by Caleb Finn that decrypts all the files. I won't spoil it for you if you're interested enough to take the time, but if not I recommend that guy's video, it's a little over an hour long.
Fun fact, if your favourate game was installed through steam (with a Start Menu shortcut), kinito recognises it and puts it into your house along with all other installed Steam games near the end of the regular game. Some other things to note: Kinito can recognise some common colours in "Favourate Colours" question, if that's the case, he would use it on your character in web world. During Hide and Seek, the title changes rapidly to different messages. During the happyness painting, you can decide to draw a PP.. although kinito is kinda dumb and doesn't really recognise a PP all that well.. (he once confused someone's landscape painting for that) Kinitos ability to see colours is actually depending on how many of said colour you used IN the picture. (for example, if you have more pink colour clicks than black, kinito will see pink and therefore thinks you are drawing him during the best friend painting) If you SOMEHOW accidentally had your Webcam open during the Camera jumpscare and said you had a mirror nearby, you will be jumpscared.. by yourself.. (due to some godot shenanigans, webcam usage wasn't.. the best here) You can call your pet "Kinito" / have an "Axotol" and kinito would take that as a compliment. You can not name yourself "Kinito".. he would hate that.. When he asks for your favourite word, he isn't lying when there's tons of CHOICE. He ONLY responds in confusion no matter the word you use. Spoilers for immersion.. KINITO NEVER CHECKS YOUR STEAM GAMES FOR CONTROLS / duck game. It's only assumed.. Kinito's ability to check for recording is based on your window TITLE.. Not the application name, therefore you can have an image called "OBS.png" open which is just noodles and have kinito check that...
another interesting thing of note: in the true ending, after kinito himself is deleted, it shows A LOT of "name_database.txt" files getting deleted, which means you're deleting every copy of a person that kinito has made over the years, possibly erasing the last remnant of them from existence (if kinito actually kills the real-world you when he asks you to join him forever) or even killing sentient entities if they can be considered alive (which i personally don't believe, they're established to be perfectly-done predictions of people's thoughts, not actual people)
@@Coppertine_ i might've seen that video? definitely watched a kinito pet theory video where i got this theory from but i dont remember if it was game theory or not
28:28 I know its not intentional on the game's part but the fact that your Isaac Desktop Background showed empty heart containers after making the decision is fitting.
The utter gut punch that occurs when you get to his secret world he's made for you and you see how much detail he's put into it :(. Like I feel bad for poor Kinito he's never had a friend before he doesn't know how to behave but he wants to be a good friend so badly.
based on the scrawl of database files that gets deleted in the true ending, he's had a lot of "friends" he may not realise that he's doing wrong, but the axolotl's ruined hundreds of computers at best and killed thousands at worst
I don't exactly know why, but that final song sung by Kinito is such a wonderful tune. I can really tell the creator put so much love, effort, and care into this game.
I really appreciate the effort the creator of this game put into it. Being able to manipulate your PC in various ways, like being able to show your recording setup, bring up the camera and interact with the search bar to literally find your address is pretty unnerving. Even though KinitoPet might not be the most "DEEPEST LORE" horror game out there, the effort put into it certainly shows. I've done the most barebones attempts at coding in GameMaker, and imagining the amount of work it must of taken to get everything to work the way it does in the game is astounding to me. You really get a huge appreciation for the art of game development when you try it yourself.
I hope this game isn't actually dangerous seeing as it was approved to be sold on Steam to begin with but it still is scary how, invasive this game is. There has never been a horror virus game like this ever that can literally open your console panel
I think it is extremely clever how the game takes the names and pfps of ppl on your Steam but it also has the potential to be unintentionally hilarious. Like in T9's playthrough where a hentai ahegao showed up
THAT EXPLAINS SO MUCH! It reminds me a lot of girl house decorating games too and how creepy they can be without any music and just having the main girl of it staring at you
@compassrose1466 I also wanted to add on that it highly resembles the "you've gotta be kidding!" Video of the treehouse here on RU-vid but I couldn't figure it out
This is my personal theory. But from how many databases are at the end being deleted, I think that Kinito's not only learning from you, but he's taken what he's learned from others and brought it to you the player. People like games, they like unexplained circumstances. They like horror. They like things that don't entirely connect so those gaps can be filled in with their own imaginations. His entire thing is learning about you and others, so he can pander to your likes. So that he'll be allowed to stay and you'll want to be his friend. See? Look how useful he is! Look how well he catches your interest and makes you curious! Don't you want to solve the mysteries through new adventures? Find out why the scares are there? Just stay and you can find out everything! Don't leave him behind and he'll handle everything! Things are deliberately made to hold interest, to keep you guessing. To keep you coming back for more. Because if you still haven't found answers, why would you want to leave? Why would you want to be anywhere else? WITH anyone else? You have Kinito and he's make everything to your liking!
honestly the idea that kinito knows that his game is scary and mysterious and makes it that way on-purpose had never crossed my mind, but that makes a surprising amount of sense sure, i'll add that into my personal theory about this game
It's so sad that Sonny and his colleagues are still in there, trying to get out. Every "scary" instance of a humanoid trying to reach out to you, that's him, trying to save you.
I can't help but notice near the end part of the command prompt readout, it starts to delete a bunch of database text files that all have plural names or apostrophe S. I feel if it was some kind of AI that breaks into reality or some kind of dumb bullshit like that, then that's everyone he's taken and given their perfect home. And he was either lying to you about wanting to be your friend even when you're deleting him, or he wasn't lying and just keeps taking more people once he finds new friends, and just doesn't know how to do it right given the violence. He's still learning after all, and he was just taught wrong.
Here’s my theory on the story: The company that developed kinito wanted fans to have a version of the character on computers, so they teamed up with a company, which made kinito pet. However, due to something that happed, kinito went rogue, killing users, by using complete control on their computer, giving free memberships, etc etc. The hide and seek mini game and the bedroom scene are presumably how other users died, an adult and a kid. My guess is that both victims were put into the web world or something like that. As for the game’s timeline, it would probably take place in the 90’s, because of the old technology everywhere. As for the protagonists (us), we’re either an employee from the company that developed kinito or a third victim that just stumbled upon him.
The ending, in my opinion, was kind of sad. Kinito wanted to be your friend but got a little bit crazy over the course of the course of the game. It really shows how some really want to be your friend but take it too far. Rest in peace, Kinito, may you find a new friend
Thank you so much for not going the 'tHiS gAmE dOxXeS yOu!!!!!!!' route. There's so much more to this game (and that bit is easily avoidable anyways) and this video did a great job at capturing that
My personal head cannon is that kinitopet has two sides to it, being the pet itself and the weird horror virus that corrupts the world, the biggest price of evidence for it is, funnily enough, in either the heartfelt moment in the… bad ending? Ig? And the good ending where you delete him and all he says is “I’m sorry”. Though there are pieces against it like the bedroom scene and the part where he does a Twitter and says he can dic you.
Both makes more sense if you consider that the horror virus is able to convincingly look like Kinito when it manifests thanks to the "upgrade" after the first crash
paused at 12:50 and played the game before coming back here to say huge thank you for this video. Every other video i've seen for this game goes loud reactions to jumpscares and titling the video "THIS MALWARE DOXXED ME" and having a calmer presence to get to how this game works and what it is actually like playing this game did a lot to convince me that it's actually worth my time (and I'm glad it did because I ended up really liking my time with it)
Hearing you talk about SML and Bowser Juniors Sleepover made me remember how terrified I was when I discovered that video when I was younger and how I was scared yet interested in the fnaf series after watching the video. I genuinely thought no one else had this same experience, nice video!
this game has had me in a chokehold i love Kinitopet. i cried when i saw kinito get deleted for the first time because i felt to bad for him and got mad at the youtuber for deleting him 😭
1. kringus is a good name for a pet 2. i looked at your avatar and instantly thought of parappa and idk if thats intentional but like smile :) 3. you put your entire pappossy into this video 4. jokes aside, this entire video and the pace + editing + audio is so nice. this is the type of shit i fall asleep to. well deserved comment and sub. cannot imagine how long this video took. really appreciate the moments where you didn't speak to make the point hit home (vs where other youtubers would probably le epic speak through it and ruin the tension), and also the voice acting is awesome (especially pointing out the times of fear and that one anger rant towards kinito lmao) 5. kinito is a goddamn masterpiece, especially the 3d segments. it amazed me the first time it switched into a third person walking perspective because of how beautiful and detailed it looked in comparison to the fairly accurate computer screen graphics of the time. goddamn amazing game. i would also buy a plush of kinito and his twiggy little legs. and also a man would never gift me an entire house full of things i like so perfect guy. i could look over the menacing, possessive, and boundary-pushing tendencies tbh
I think it could possibly be about Kinito simply wants people to be with him forever, since being an AI, he doesn't have anything else. He probably made up and changed his origins in a way to keep you there or keep you interested, similar to how Joker changes his story in The Dark Knight. That's just my theory though. I'm about as lost as you are.
im not going to be one of the millions of people to mention the arg attached to the game that explains the story INSTEAD i am going to say how happy i am you covered this. i literally had just discovered kinitoPET before you uploaded this, and im so glad to see your perspective on things. love your editing style so much
i think this is a game about a program that wants your attention, kinito always emphasizes friendship, and when you dont listen kinito panics and does something to refocus your attention on itself. dunno why it would do that
The start of Chapter 2 reminded me of Bailey’s _You’ve Gotta Be Kidding!_ series for some reason. Also, as for backtracking in linear games like this (not in like big open world games, just in this genre specifically), where should only ever be three types of backtracking: A short game meant to be played multiple times to find out how to “win”, a medium-length game with easily accessable branching points that have some form of lasting impact, and a long game built with replayability in mind, having the ability to basically “abridge” the game if you’ve already played it before.
kinko pet is such a good intrusive game and I'm honestly surprised of how legal it and controlling a game could be. I'm honestly so glad that people are finding out of the game because its dimension transferring with analog horror is so meta!! also yay new retrospective
Fun fact: the robot in the build a toy mini game is the mascot of the game engine "Godot," the game engine that, presumably, KinitoPET uses (although fellow game devs speculate the creators use a more heavily modified version of it as the engine is completely open source).
I actually watched a streamer play this and it was terrifying lol. Kinito somehow joined the stream as well as the discord server. He was giving hints to the streamer via discord, he also “got rid” of a few discord members (may they rest easy ☝️😔). But overall a very very crazy experience not only for the streamer but also for us viewers. 10/10 would recommend lol
I felt the bullet go through my heart, kind of, when you decided to kill your friend there over dexter the stick. Quite the experience to feel when one of you names could be seen "dying".
Personally i feel like fhis game might be a commentary on nostalgia, and how sometimes things should be left in the past! Sure things were charming and it has good memories, but the Internet way back when was different, invasive, and there wasnt a lot of saftey because of how young it was, of course the boot ups and all the old sights and sounds bring us to a simpler time, but maybe it should stay put away for a while. Great video btw!!!!! Ive been really liking your longform content a lot and i cant wait to see what you do next!
Credits to datchia who made this lore. I got it from a vid. I cant remember everything she stated but here is everything i remember from her vid. (ill add some of my stuff too) Kinito co. started to make plushies and tamogachis ar first and realized that kinito was the most popular out of the three. They took advantage of this and created kinitopet. The creator is sonny. Remember that. Kinitos goal was simple. Make as maby friends as posible. He took that VERY seriously. So he did EVERYTHING to know stuff from the user. And the previous users were killed NOT by kinito, but by their love to kinito. People were very addicted to using kinitopet that they forgot to eat, sleep and drink so they died. Sonny heard about this and he comited suicide. And by all the info kinito got from the users, he would make AI clones of them. Including sonny. Sonny was so confused on what he was. So thats why we sometimes see him saying "Am I even him?" because he doesnt know if he is an ai replica of sonny himself. The entries are from sonny guiding you to delete kinito. And all those databases from the command prompt are users who beame an ai. Sonny (or ai sonny) was willing to take the risk and accepted that the player was deleting him. After kinito was deleted kinito regreted of his doings, begging for forgiveness. Honestly its pretty sad seeing kinito slowly fade away.
the creating your ideal world part made me think of buddy simulator 1984. it has a similar idea of a program, a game compilation of sorts, and completely text based, but the program eventually starts to evolve and create more of a world for you to explore. it was pretty cool, and i recommend it!
saw this video in the recommendation of a similar essay by caleb finn, and ofc i'm not surprised this video's really well made. as with your urbanspook and shipwrecked 64, i am quite pleasantly surprised at your skills in telling stories and building atmosphere, whilst still making silly little jokes that stand out. fuck it, might as well subscribe! also postal ost jumpscare SEVERAL TIMES GODDAMNIT
Genuinely a fear of mine is looking out my door or window and seeing something or someone slowly peering inside so that sequence in the game terrified me as well
I think the "story" might be about a simple AI made by a toy company that just wanted to gather data. But as a lot of us know, the internet wasn't a safe space for kids and isn't now either. If you look at how people make AIs that get corrupted by users interacting with it in malicious ways and consider all the fucked up shit on the internet for a simple AI to learn, you got yourself something like this. Something that is following it's original simple coding but has been so fucked up by age and the internet.
I feel like your background elevated parts of the creepyness. I wonder how my animated background of the Xenoblade Chronicles title screen loop would look getting cracked like that.
Not sure if you knew this since you played with streamer mode or OBS, but when he says you made a mistake with your address, he types in "what is my address" in the windows search bar, revealing your location.
Wow. This is a great video. You captured my feelings about kinito pet perfectly and then some. I happy that I found this video and am excited to see what you have next in store. Kinito pet is a very scary game and I'm glad people like you bring light to it. 10/10 video.
Love your content because of your tone, you’re not some dude three rooms away lecturing me on the finer arts of fnaf fan games, but you’re also not shitting on game to shit on them. You’re just, a dude and I mean that in the best possible way, you’re just a dude that’s having a casual conversation.
I don’t know if anybody has mentioned this yet but there’s a game with a similar premise of “old game gets booted up and will do anything to be your best friend” I don’t think either took from each other, and this other game, Buddy Simulator 1984 is really fun; worth a play if you wanna
Pappo i know this is completely outta nowhere for you but i gotta make it known, i see so much potential in you as a content creator and so much more. Hell eventually collabing with you man! I love your content and it’s genuinely amazing and inspiring. Keep up the great work and maybe one day you’ll be well known! Have agreat rest of your day:)
