Eric Crouch should have just switched positions instead of being so stubborn. He would have had a solid career as an NFL slot receiver. He was like 5'11" flat with a noodle arm. His arm alone would have never won him the Heisman in THAT Big 12, back when their top teams had NFL defenses. And honestly we all know Grossman was robbed. Crouch's arrogance was his downfall, Russ and Kyler have cannons, he wasn't like them. With his speed, he would have been a really good slot receiver.

As a native, I can say that there were a few things that lead to this program’s downfall: 1) Frank Solich: you left out the real reason why he was fired, it was an off the field deal that had nothing to do with football. If it didn't happen, he would’ve never been fired. 2) The end of the UNO Football: One of the biggest hallmarks of the Osborne Era was the Walk-On program and the UNO Mavericks were enablers of that. It was crucial in keeping a lot of Nebraska prospects in state. Now with it gone, a lot Of Nebraska natives are leaving the state for NDSU, Kansas, Iowa State, and whoever else. 3) Leaving the Big XII: Absolutely destroyed our recruiting pipelines and landing in the Big Ten meant that we had to rebuild these pipelines while trying to compete against the likes of Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan. Of course, most Nebraska fans are still living in a time where Bill Clinton is still president and fail to understand that we are stuck in a conference we simply don’t belong in and lack any sort of equalizer or way to establish ourselves in the modern era. Basically, I miss Mavericks football.

Q - Why does Mrs. Osborne serve Tom his cereal on a plate? A - Any time Tom gets near a bowl, he chokes. Nebraska was great for so long, and regularly beat my Buffaloes like rented mules. Our walk-on program has seen a huge revival under Frost. Our roster was at 160 players last year, biggest in the country by far. Problem is, all those walk-ons are young and walk-ons are not ready made players. They need time to develop. That's true for scholarship players too, but especially for walk-ons.

@@jasonshaneyfelt1039 I presume under Frost they are genuine walk-ons. Back in the day walk-ons didn't count toward recruiting limits, so everybody walked on at Nebraska, even the top recruits. People need to shut up with the "shouldn't have fired Frank Solich or Bo Pelini" stuff. Fact is when you're USED to having a dynasty beforehand you don't just sit there and let another new coach just start winning only 10 or 11 games a year. Let somebody come into Alabama, Clemson, or even Ohio State and start going 10-3 and not competing for conference and/or national titles. I PROMISE you they'll fire their coach too. Why? Because they're USED to having better than that. That's why. Now if another new guy comes in after that previously fired coach and starts going 8-4 or 6-6, then THAT'S what happened to Nebraska. It could happen to any program that expects better than what they're getting especially if they've had much better before.

Obviously, much has transpired since then: The cancellation of B1G X football, the resurfacing with an 8-game conference only schedule, etc. Now we are facing a GOOD Hawkeye team at the end of this week on Black Friday. There are shocking and surprising results halfway through this 2020 season; Penn State with a horrible 0-5 start, Indiana at 4-1 and ALMOST coming back from a 21 point deficit to Playoff-Bound Ohio State, for example. Nebraska is now 1-3 with no foreseeable wins the rest of this year. I am going to send this link via e-mail to a bunch of my friends. GREAT JOB on this video, sir!!! 👏👏👏👍👍👍

Solich's issue was the same as Pelini. He couldn't recruit. The glory years under Solich were all with Osborne's recruits. The firing may have been a bit premature, but it was justified. I lived near Lincoln for a little over three years during the time when NE was switching to the B10. Most of the people I met were wonder people and I enjoyed my time there. However, the fanbase was completely unrealistic. They thought they would dominate the B10 but instead NE got routinely dominated. Times have changed and recruiting to Lincoln would be extremely challenging. It is not a destination state or city. The campus isn't especially beautiful. No beaches or lakes; no mountains. The only edge they have is past lore from another conference. So either they find a miracle coaching staff, which is unlikely due to intense competition or the fans need to adjust the inflated expectations. Great people though.

College Football is all about the coach. Nebraska has had a series of misses. 1. Frankie Solich. Personal issues and he wasn't good at recruiting without Tom. Also, by this time everyone had caught up to the strength and conditioning program. 2. Bill Callahan. Brought in to modernize the offense. He eventually did so, but took too long to adjust to the college game and how to deal with Nebraska's strange recruiting situation. Honestly I think they fired him too early. 3. Bo Pelini. He did well, but the offense regressed massively under him at a time when football rules changes were making it more of an offensive game. Undid all the good work Callahan did on the offense. Once Carl left the defense tended to be mediocre as well. 4. Mike Riley. The head-scratcher. He had some nice QB drafts, but didn't seem to be able to condition or motivate players. 5. Scott Frost. We'll see, but coming from the Oregon school I'm hopeful that he will be successful in the more offensively dominated college football of today.

As a big 10 fan, I was excited to see Nebraska join the conference. I'm just shocked that it hasn't worked out as well for them on the field. After the 2009 Big 12 title game, I figured Nebraska would be a consistent contender in the big 10. Especially when they made the east and west divisions. That's why I kind of disagree with the Bo Pelini firing. I understand it but don't 100% agree with it or thought it was well timed. As for Frost, I just finger pointed the mess Riley left. Scott's done a decent job at recruiting considering where they've finished and the recruiting classes he brings in. After last season, we know how the team played so anything less than a big 10 west division title is a disappointment this season. I like seeing the comments though and understanding why Nebraska hasn't been Nebraska. Idk if the scholarship limit being voided would allow them to grab more of their walk ons but I hope that means they could turn things around. I hate seeing 2nd tier teams labeled better than them.

Bill Callahan was the beginning of the end. Can't completely change the style of offense from run option to pro style before you get the pieces to play those roles in place, esp at QB position. Not sure if firing Pelini when we did helped much eitber.

At least Neb has a governor with the courage to not follow the idiots in the other 43 states that ordered their residents to stay in place during Corona. Here are Italy's deaths by age, as of 4-22-20, www.statista.com/statistics/1105061/coronavirus-deaths-by-region-in-italy/ We had their numbers before ever sheltering in place. We knew statically what we were up against. 95% are 55 and older. That is, 95% were retired or close to retirement. The world shut down everything vs spending a fraction (current and long term) to protect the elderly. The world has officially gone insane. Way to go Swedes. Close to having their herd immunity numbers and proving rest of world wrong. Support higher education, esp critical thinking!!!

It’s mind blowing to think that Nebraska was two plays away from five straight national titles in the 1990s. But Nebraska moving to the Big Ten was the final nail in the coffin. They lost a huge chunk of their Texas recruiting pipeline…as well as their identity. Edit: With Oklahoma and Texas going to the SEC in 2025, Nebraska going to Big Ten was going to happen eventually. But they could have better prepared themselves for the move, or maybe moved later on. As a college football fan, I want to see Nebraska succeed again, because I believe when Nebraska is winning, college football is better for it. But it seems like they really don't care anymore. For the last decade, Nebraska Football is like that family member that keeps exhibiting self-destructive behaviors. You plead with him or her to get help and turn their lives around, but they still keep believing everything is just fine.

WRONG! Neb won the NC in 70 and 71. Delaney retired in 72. It took 21 years and a silly schedule for Osborne to repeat. And none of the coaches you clowns throw around got the luxury of coaching in the defunct Big 8. Osborne is the worst coach in having the most of all the coaches since Delaney and doing the least amount with it over most of his career.

The 90s footballs teams were dominated by big, strong lines who won by attrition. Nowadays, speed is the name of the game and you can tell that Scott knows this. Watching the last two years, you can see the obvious inspiration drawn from Osborne. Our offense has been one dimensional ( probably to a detriment )with constant screens and runs but Frost continues to recruit fast, shifty players. Adrian Martinez, Wandale Robinson, Luke McCaffrey, etc. Frost is mimicing the model of the past but adapting it to modern times. He knows what he's doing, it will just take time.
@clarky23

People also need to remember he's still dealing with players he didn't bring into the program. He showed his leadership as soon as he got there and a few players tried to "boast" their dominance and he promptly removed them.

Agreed. Came in thinking this guy wouldn't know sh*t about Nebraska. Touched on a lot of good points about what has affected Nebraska. Don't always buy into the can't recruit to Nebraska because of location. Look at Creighton basketball. Nebraska can recruit and with technology and social media....no one is too far away from home.

Firing Frank Solich cursed Nebraska football. They've never regained the swagger they had when they broke that connection to the Devaney/Osborne years. Even when they won some games under Pelini, they weren't the same Nebraska Cornhuskers of old. But I'm not one of those people who believes it's impossible for Nebraska to return to the top of the college football universe. If you hire the right coach, you can win 10-11 games even with just mediocre recruits. And if you can string a few of those 10-11 win seasons together, you can start becoming a magnet program where elite recruits want to go. But again, you need the right coach.
