The Dual Motor EV With A "2.4L Battery" | 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review

If a full EV doesn't quite work for you, or if you simply can't afford a 3-row BEV, the Outlander is an interesting option. It drives like a dual-motor EV for 38 miles, has a heat pump, technically it seats 7 (more on that in the video) and it even DC fast charges. Well, DC charges at least. The big deal is the price tag which starts around $40,000 and thanks to the 2.4L engine on board allows gasoline road trips when you need to go farther than your daily commute.

Owner of a 2016 Outlander specifically because it has a small 3rd row. We’re a family of 6 and the oldest can fit there. We don’t need a gas guzzler. Long distance trips, we will rent. Would’ve bought the plug in back then if it offered a third row. Really liking this one and will definitely be checking the used market although this 2016 has been problem free so it will be awhile.

To me, they totally screwed up the 3rd row. It's not a useful 3rd row. It's a rear area to drive around extra weight while limiting cargo space. I would not need the 3rd row, but I surely would prefer the option of easily removing it without removing bolts. Otherwise, I like the looks and mostly everything else you noted

I'm one of those in the camp where the Outlander works for me (mostly EV driving, road trips 2-3 times per year). The theory of operation for this drivetrain works more for me than the 6 speed in the Koreans. But man, what a buttaface! RE: CHAdeMO vs CCS…… I think the reason Mitsubishi went with the CHAdeMO vs CCS is that CCS doesn’t support V2X/V2H which the CHAdeMO does. This makes the Outlander a MultiUse battery situation in that it can power your home for up to a week between the battery and the ICE

Thanks as always perfect technical review - I was looking at other plug-ins but I like this all EV design where the car is primarily an EV and the generator provides current. Seems to be a less complex design than having transmissions diff's etc. just a few questions regarding the speed of the gas engine / generator, is it like a volt where it runs slow at moderate slow speeds then speeds up if needed on inclines or does it run at one set speed. Also, regarding the recharge function, will it charge the HV battery to 100% or a reduced amount like the Volt. Thanks Mike

FYI, the Outlander has reached a 4th gen., but it is also true that as PHEV is only the 2nd gen. Resemblance to Range Rover comes due to the fact that in reality Range Rover copied a lot of the 3rd gen Outlander released in 2013 (just compare it with the RR Sport from 2016-2017), especially the shape of front and tail lights.

We have the Kia Sorento PHEV, and we (mostly) love it. One less-obvious downside: Our 60lb dog definitely prefers a bench seat. She has a bit of trouble staying on the 2nd-row captains seat during cornering. We also wish we had that heat pump and 2nd row window screens. Any attempt at simple ventilation in cold weather causes the ICE to fire up.

Ideally the phev world is the best world, especially for Americans. As the range limits get closer to 50 miles for phev battery packs (and ideally, hopefully they’ll end up reaching as high as 75-100 miles,) it’d be fairly easy for most Americans to drive to work one way in EV only mode, charge at work with level 2 charger, and be fully charged by the end of the work day so they can go back home in EV only mode as well. Since we love our road trips but don’t typically take more than a couple of trips per year, nor do we really travel more than 100 miles in a single day anyways, the gas engine is better suited for those long trips/days as opposed to an EV only car with a battery pack 10 times the size of a PHEV battery pack. It’s a waste of battery resources to make those massive battery packs that will hardly ever be fully depleted. It makes so much more sense to push for PHEVs and more level 2 charging infrastructure at work places to help enable that. Gas would only have to be used for road trips or days of really, really heavy driving. I guess if anyone does do a lot of driving every day, like rideshare or delivery drivers, then sure, those guys need EVs to truly curtail their gas use, but the majority of Americans simply don’t need a massive battery pack.
@themanthemyththebanger
@themanthemyththebanger Год назад
@@pinkjuano the answer you're looking for is "cheap 150-to-200-mile EVs" for that 95% of commuting use, plus rental/ride-sharing/mass transit for those couple of road trips a year. But, we Americans are forever stuck on overbuying cars (actually, trucks and SUVs) for capabilities we seldom (or never) use.

if correctly engineered, a series hybrid should return a better fuel economy than a parallel hybrid. As the generator could work at constant load at regimes of max efficiency at highway speeds, as compared to constantly variable load of an engine in a parallel configuration. An SUV requires 40-50kW to cruise at 70-80mph. A correctly dimensioned engine should output that power at around 3000rpm, potentially returning 40-50mpg. With correctly dimensioned battery to fill in the transient load changes, and electric motors dimensioned and geared like they would be in an EV

I liked your review. Two things you talked about: 1. Floatiness in The front axel 2. It pushes around the corner due to rear motor more powerfull. Does that mean this car struggles to stay in the centre of the lane and you have to keep correcting it all the time? The reason i am asking is because i owned a hyundai Elantra in the past with the same problem and i ended up selling it because manufacturer failed to fix the problem and there was a major recall as well later.

Of course, with rising interest rates and car prices, not certain I can afford a new car since I’m retired and the financial markets have tanked. Interesting concept. Outlander seems to have some nice features, but I’m not familiar with the hybrid vehicles. I don’t like the “orange” color on the dashboard. Maybe there are other interior options?? What is the towing capacity? I presently have a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder and it has a 6000 lb towing capacity. I typically get 25 mpg at 70 mph in the summer months; 20 to 22 in the city. @@nc3826 If I remember correctly, on the dcbel r16, they can change out the plug to CCS later if you get a vehicle that needs it, so you don't need to buy a whole new unit when the time comes. I'm considering one for my Nissan LEAF since it's considerably cheaper than getting a whole home inverter, transfer switch, and stationary batteries of the same capacity for backup purposes. Plus there's the solar integration and the intelligent charging management. Currently not available in my part of the world, but supposed to be in the new year or two. Only thing I want to get clarified is generator integration for longer outages. Ideally I'd want to trigger the generator to run automatically when the car battery goes low, and turn off when the battery is charged above a threshold, but I think I might need additional hardware and software.

@@seabream When I checked out the dcbel r16, months ago the CHAdeMO version vs the CCS type1 version, were totally separate... With the CCS version supposed to be getting bidirectional charging capabilities at a later date.... Those subset of protocols were not finalized... CHAdeMO vs CCS type1 DCFC standards, are based on different protocols (It's analogous to them speaking different languages)... So if dcbel offers a conversion option now, that would be very unusual in the industry... and they are designed for the North American market, with a 120-volt split phase service... And I'm aware of the other capabilities it offers, depending on how it's configured.... It's a relatively new and small company, so I would suggest triple checking everything ahead of time... You would expect, then, to get more cargo space than the RAV4. The Outlander does, but 65 ft3 is insignificantly more than the Prime's 63 ft3. The third row is completely unusable and I'd much rather have the Prime's spare tire. Including a soon to be depreciated fast charging standard also doesn't make any sense and increased the cost of the Outlander for no benefit. A lot of strange decisions and bad efficiency make this a strong no for me.

The flip & fold third row, lifted directly out of minivans since about 2000 but those minivans still offered a spare tire. The Sorento includes a spare tire simply by mounting underneath the vehicle like trucks have done since the 1950s. Adding DC Fast Charging is nice; but by choosing CHAdeMO, they are drastically limiting the usability since probably less than 5 percent of DC Fast Chargers installed these days are that standard and there is the fact that CCS is a combo connector which takes up less space on the vehicle while CHAdeMO is an entirely separate connector. And finally, it's a Mitsubishi, which means finding a dealership that last more than the lifespan of a Mayfly and paying higher insurance rates due to a lack of part availability.
