The Effects of Abandonment on Spinel - Steven Universe: The Movie 

Spinel screaming "NO!" when Steven tried to leave, that's gotta be an effect of negative reinforcement. She doesn't have her memories back at this point but she instinctively knows bad stuff happens when people leave.

Also Spinel was getting left out when Steven was singing with Amythest, she was just on the sidelines I'm pretty sure people noticed

Obsessed with freeing gems yet she imprisoned the one who cared about her most.

It’s terrible to think that in every Steven Universe episode, Spinel was still at the garden T_T

Imagine though if spinel found out sooner about pink abandoning her when pink was alive and came for revenge earlier and had a confrontation with pink that might have been even more emotional and intense.

I kinda wished Spinel got a better ending. It feels like history is doomed to repeat itself with the other diamonds. I kinda wanted her and Garnet to become friends (since reset Garnet was the only one to actually really treat her like a friend).

Spinel is definitely the best villain Steven Universe has ever had by a wide margin. I feel like the show really wasted the potential The Diamonds had as antagonists. In hindsight the ending of that story arc seemed very rushed. The movie on the other hand took the time to establish Spinel's motivations and paved the way more clearly for her Redemption which the show didn't always succeed in doing. Hello Jasper and Bismuth. After the line "Wondering night after night is this how it works am I doing it right?" In the song Drift Away I was completely on her side.

Spinel did nothing wrong, and she DESPERATELY needs a hug.

Spinel is the best and deserves all the love. I think the reason Pink abandoned Spinel is so she could act more "mature" by leaving behind "childish" things. Pink probably saw Spinel more as a toy than a best friend. We have to remember how things were back then. The Diamonds were on the top and they just wanted gems to fall in line, follow the rules and orders. Pink isn't completely bad, but she isn't completely good either. She's a flawed person, so I don't hate her fully. She also has her reasons and motivations for doing things, even if they're not always the best thing to do. Unfortunately Pink disappeared from giving birth to Steven so Pink can't really get redeemed or correct any issues she has done like the others.

Spinel is an incredibly interesting cartoon character. Abandonment causing borderline personality disorder is way deep. I love her character. I disliked the Pink Diamond character for leaving her there. The Diamonds were sociopaths until Steven "fixed" them, sort of. Pink wanted to save earth and didn't give a shit about Spinel. (Pink would have made great CEO, stealing worker pensions without a second thought.) In the SU world it is good Pink's Diamond became part of Steven. Pink couldn't have fixed anything. Only Steven could.

I don’t think Pink was justified at all either, but to be fair, Spinel was literally just a toy to her. Considering how the other diamonds just treated their pearls and other gems like commodities that can be thrown away and replaced if need be, Pink probably just didn’t know better. I don’t think she was being malicious, just thoughtless about the long-term effects. ...which is pretty much Pink in a nutshell.

The saddest part for me, personally, was when Steven tried to leave her behind. She immediately panicked and flew off the handle.

I'd say my only major criticism of the movie was the fact that in the show Pink Diamond's actions where at worst morally ambiguous. In this instance she was completely, unambiguously, black and white wrong. But then again this was before she had any of her major character development which led her into being Rose Quartz.

Im calling it now, Final arc of Steven Universe. Pink Diamond never gave up her form for steven just made a new gem in secret for him before ditching earth and leaving all her problems on him to deal with before swooping in on that Happily ever after to reap the benefits her kid worked to create.

Remember when you are making judgements about Pink Diamond, remember Pink Diamond suffered from abuse as well, people who were abuse will often abuse others. Not excusing her behavior, but that is what happens. Good thing that Steven was not raised by his mother.

I don't think Spinel's redemption was necessarily rushed since she explicitly stated she didn't want to be a villain in the movie. Her actions were an impulsive reaction to feeling abandoned by Pink Diamond. She felt bad so she did bad things. All she wanted was to be a friend, so that's why I actually kinda like her redemption, though I think just passing her to the diamonds as "one of Pink's lost treasures" is a bit iffy

Pre-earth Pink Daimond is horrible I think Pink might have come back for her, but didn't have away, but if she went back for her, Spinel would have given her identy away, and Pink might have thought it was to dangerous for her, and as the work part, she was trying to prove she was like the other diamonds. I also wondering that statment that blue made

I like the theory that after the report, Spinel ran back to Homeworld looking for answers. There she was picked up by a radical faction of gems that were planning to attack Steven and put the Diamond Authority back the way it was. Spinel was the perfect face for the attack, as they couldn’t be associated with disobeying the Diamonds wishes.

So what Pink did was reprehensible but I do think its important to remember she is a victim of abuse and neglect herself and she learned that that was an acceptable way to deal with things you consider undesirable, not trying to justify her actions but its a viscous cycle of abuse which thankfully Steven broke

For those saying steven was being a jerk for ignoring spinel you have to remember this girl tried to kill him just moments ago, and her new attitude is throwing him for a loop he doesn't know how exactly to handle her. Plus he wasn't completely ignoring her. He could have left her behind with greg to watch or bismuth while he went off to find anwsers but he didn't. The other crystal gems would have bubbled her the moment amythst got her memories back and could bubble again. But he didn't. He keeps her around. You might say he only kept her around so he could get answers from her once her memories returned but that just doesn't make sense to me. 1. That's not Steven's personality. And 2. If that was the case he could have had amythst bubble her temporarily while he rescued the others and than unbundle her again once everyone was back to normal but he didn't. He choose to let her be around him knowing she could get her memories back at any moment and try to kill him again. Also it's not that he is ignoring her it sc just that right now he is focused on getting his friends memories back. He isn't completely ignoring her he just realizes if he focuses his attention on her before getting the other gems memories back than she could get hers back and try to kill him again leaving him defenseless. He is just trying to help the others first and than he can focus on spinele. That's all. He is also dealing with a lot right now. 1. The loss of his friends memories. 2. A psychopath trying to kill him for unknown reasons who has now forgotten everything. 3. An injector that could destroy the entire earth at any moment. 4. Worrying that spinele will suddenly get her memories back before any of the other gems do and try and kill him again. 5. The loss of his powers leaving him defenseless. 6. Don't forget everytime he tries to use his powers it drains him and nearly kills him at this moment. 7. HE IS A 16 YEAR OLD CHILD NOT AN ADULT. These are problems that in the real world would be left up to an adult with a degree to handle not a child. So give him a little slack he is going through a lot himself at the moment. You can't expect a 16 year old boy to be perfect at this. He is not purposely being rude. He just is trying to deal with so many things at once. That's all. :) Plus think about this in real world terms. This is basically the same concept as kids who bring guns to school and shoot up the place. Only 1% of those kids do this because they enjoy the suffering. While the other 99% are being bullied and tormented. They just want the pain to stop. 98% of those kids will have reached out to a teacher or an adult before the gun but were brushed aside and ignored allowing the kids torment to continue. While only 1% of those kids don't reach out at all. They like spinele are hurting and have gone through a lot yet unlike spinele they don't have people like us saying poor baby or how dare you ignore her. rather they have people calling for the death penalty. Screaming to lock them up for ever. Both parties attempted murder yet spinele we over look why because she is adorable and was abandoned. Yet how many kids in real life who also do similar things have also been abandoned. I am not saying these kids are justified for what they did. I am just saying give steven a little slack for being a tiny bit rude at times. Under the circumstances I think steven handled it really well. :)

No. I've never been abandoned a day in my life. Now someone that was close to me passed away suddenly (my mother) so I can understand the feeling.

I never stopped hating pink diamond. At any point she could have told the others her self after the war and things settled. She was a diamond! She could have just told the lower gems working for her to stop! She could have advocated for all the same things and done the rebellion but as her self instead of creating the Rose quarts persona. Think about it a diamond going against the others to bring a change. It could have saved time and lives!

I think the hardest part of the series is that you spend almost half of it sure that Rose is a pure and perfect character, hearing of her love, her compassion for others, her healing tears, etc. But then that visage begins to unravel, starting with the idea that she shattered pink. From then on she becomes more and more questionable, more dislikable, culminating into the epitome of selfishness you see in the movie. I don't think she's evil honestly because if you start with the movie and watch the series backwards, it would look like a redemption arc. We learn about her most recent actions first and her farthest back actions last, so we hear all the worst things NOW rather than to start. And honestly i think that's why she ended up so dislikable. You hear about all the good up front but then get slammed with all the horrible one piece at a time And I think they meant to do that. We really got to experience the shock and pain that steven did, with the unhappiness that we'd never actually get to hear Rose/Pink defend her actions or make an excuse, any reason at all, as to why she did what she did. We start off thinking she's benevolent and motherly.. But then she began showing so much childishness and cowardice, like when she faked her own shattering, poofed bismuth, lied to her friends, abandoned spinel, etc etc In her own right, she's an amazing character if only because they wrote her in such a way, and in such an order of events, that she went from beloved to hated without ever being personally present

I guess the next lesson for steven that creating an ideal world isn't ideal for everyone. Even the "redeemed" diamonds don't seem at ease with the new order. I believe Spinel had some help from gems wanting to see the new order destroyed and everything returned to the old ways..

After what Pink Diamond did to Spinel in the Steven Universe movie, Pink Diamond has once again become loathsome.

Just gonna say it. Yes, Rose saved Earth and helped the off colors. Yes, she did great things. But good acts done make someone's wrong doing ignorable. If you do wrong, you should still be called out on it even if you eventually did right. Pink Diamond hurt a lot of people. She is personally responsible for every villain in this series: Lapis was pulled into a war she didnt want to be in and both physically and emotionally wrecked; Jasper and the diamonds were emotionally fuck by Pink fakicide, and now Spinel. What makes it hurt worse is Steven selves the problems...by talking to them. By listening - except Jasper because she was literally losing the ability to talk - to them. So all of this could be solved if Pink just listened and talked to people instead of just acting. And before someone says she tried to talk to the diamonds, she kind of didnt. She let herself be talked down to then pouted about it and started a war. If she had tried talking like an adult, and made herself heard like Steven did an entire war would have been avoided most likely. Yes, she changed as person, and she deserves praise for that. But you cant ignore her wrong doings just because she ultimately did right. You address those wrong doings as they are and dont make excuses. There are no canonical excuses for what happened to Spinel.

Talking about Abandonment. I once went to one of those big playgrounds (The ones you pay to get in) when i was around 7 with friends of me and their parents. There was a throne somewhere and it was popular most of the times since people would go on it with friends and roleplay about being the leader of something. Since we were early my brother told me to hold the seat for him until he came back. Let's just say he ran off and i sat there for around 4-6 hours until someone of the group noticed me sitting there and ask what i was doing so i said i'm just sitting here. The person told me it was time to go and so i stood up and searched for my brother. I saw him playing with other friends and he just said "I forgot about you" and then says sorry in a very cold voice. Did he get punished? No, Suprisingly not. Note that i was sitting on there keeping the place and suprisingly noone came around. I had contact with noone for around 4-6 hours. Ah isn't that just lovely.

Before the Movie I was a Pink Diamond apologist, she wasn't 100% good or evil she was a complicated character that you don't often see in fiction especially in cartoons. On the positive side she was an idealist in a society that frowned on her love and interests in organic life, and though the diamond clearly cared about her their punishments like making Pink feel bad about her actions with her aura ability comes off as emotional abuse. She wanted to protect life on earth which she valued with great passion from being destroyed due to the expectations that were forces on her by the other diamonds cause White Diamond was a narcissist and believed that because she was perfect her system was perfect and therefore she could make the rest of the universe perfect. We saw her attempt to reason with Blue and Yellow but they didn't understand her interests and wouldn't hear a word of it because colonizing planets is what gems are supposed to do so even though in the long run it hurt a lot of innocent gems and thousands got shattered, I can understand why she decided rebellion was the only option. Eventually with the influence of Garnet also wanted to fight for the freedoms of all gem. On the negative side Pink was naive, immature, impulsive, irresponsible, and selfish. I don't think she ever internalized how important she was to others and how much weight her position as a diamond held held. She believed that Blue, Yellow and White wouldn't care if she was gone, she never considered how much she meant to Pearl who clearly loved her but then was very quick to toss her to the side for Greg and to give up her own life to make Steven, and now here again with Spinel telling her to stay put and then abandoning and forgetting Spinel like she was less than a person. Spinel took her order very seriously because she believed her best friend would come back for her eventually but she never did. The Diamonds felt like they lost a little sister/daughter and grieved for her but they were also space tyrant and mildly abusive (Acceptable) Pearl was created to serve her and developed a deep emotional bond with her, although Greg is also a great guy and I can see the chemistry between them, they made Steven, and though it took time and a lot of emotional support from her friends Pearl eventually moved on (Acceptable) Spinel only ever wanted to make her happy and was made to be her best friend so she thought there was something wrong with her to make Pink not want her any more and fell into a self destructive downwards spiral. She was completley alone for 6000 years. Isolation itself for long periods of time can drive people insane and with no other friends to support her she couldn't move on like pearl did, if she hadn't gotten the transmission she would have just remained in the garden for the rest of eternity waiting for a friend who probably didn't deserve her to begin with (Unacceptable!) While I still don't think Pink is "Evil" I definitely don't like her as a person anymore.

i think what it was like how everthing wasn't actually her intention to do any harm and she could intend to come back at some point maybe but over the course of stop coloization on earth was so forcus on it that when the war was already over she just ended up forgot about her unintentionally. its just what could tell from her previous action. they're bad, but they're unintentionally bad.

Let's not forget her bubbling the actual rose quartz's in her throne room too. I hope this is added to the next season of them being unbubbled and learning everything. That's another abandonment right there. There has to be a reason too of why she left them as well

I just want to hug spinel and tell her itll be okay. :( All she knew in the beginning was happiness and how to be goofy, but when the only person she could express that with left her, she just kept waiting, waiting, and waiting in hope that theyll come back because she doesnt know how to handle these emotions of depression and stress any other way. Then she realizes that the person died, never to come back to her, so she felt anger, and jealousy that she had never felt before. She did what she did because she was suffering from PTSD and abandonment, and she had no idea how to fix it, so she just did anything she could. She was shielding her pain through anger. I've never really seen a characters that's THAT realistic or developed with a mental illness. Spinel was villian. a powerful one at that, but her being a victim and having a very valid reason to act the way she did makes her such a great character to watch. Shes relatable, and shes lovable because the audience wants her to be redeemed because they think she did nothing wrong.

I can relate to spinal, I have been abandoned from friends many times, when I watched the movie for the first time, I literally fell in love with her. She is AMAZING

Just imagine that before Pink went to warp back and let Spinel play the game alone, Spinel cheerfully says, "I can't wait for you to come back!" with that innocent smile...

I think a reason why pink diamond did not want to bring spinel with her was because of how clingy and naive she was she was worried about her ruining their plans and everything and if she changed to rose quartz and started battling against the diamond Authority and if she had spinel with her the diamonds would instantly recognize that she was pink diamond. Maybe?.. Idk it's just what I thought

I like Spinel, she is a good character and I was aboandoned by my freinds exactly the way he described at the start of the video so I can sympathize with her on a level. I dont like pink diamond especially after what she done to now one of my favourite characters Spinel , I'm just like, why doesn't she have empathy for other people she should know what leaving everyone would do to them, she clearly has shown empathy when she felt bad for taking life from earth .

I relate to spinel on a really high level, I give her the grand title of the only character to make me burst into tears.

I think that Spinel was probably too clingy for her, too nonstop and exhausting, she was getting sick of having her around. It's easy to hate Pink for what happened, but my opinion of her has changed but little as a result of what happened. And well, I relate to Pink in a unfortunate way. I know how it can be to have clingy friends and despite being superficially sweet and cheerful I've honestly done similar things, ignoring a needy friend or eventually allowing us to lose contact just because I wasn't having any fun anymore, as I didn't even think to admit to them that I was overwhelmed or work to keep the relationships going. Of course I've felt guilty from that and been trying to learn from those mistakes and be better step by step. And I think Pink had enough time to change as well, even a little. But when she left Homeworld, she might have lost her chance to return for Spinel even if she did change her mind. She could only hope that Spinel had moved on and was happy somewhere, while in reality she had been standing there waiting. Pink's selfish, cavalier attitude towards the feelings of others took another victim, and though she was wrong, I don't think she intended to cause so much hurt. It was just an irresponsible decision from her youth like all the others. She's not the greatest person, but my opinion of her hasn't changed very much. this is copied from a comment I made on something related, but I want to add that the other option is that Pink somehow just forgot about her entirely and/or that this is just a plothole....? There isn't really a way to justify this tho, I know that, I'm just trying to figure out what the reasons could be.

I honestly relate HEAVILY to Spinel. Before her abandonment, she was a happy, bubbly character. After, she was a emotionally unstable mess, flipped upside down, literately. That's exactly what happened to me. I was in 5th grade and my best friend, who I met in 3rd grade, stopped talking to me. We were talking at lunch, and he was trying to find out who my crush was. It took all of lunch. When leaving lunch and going to clubs, he asked, "Is *insert old crush's name here* your crush??" I did a small, "mhm" and went to clubs. At gym, he ran up to me and was like, " *insert old crush's name here* is your crush, right" I said yes and he was just like "oh" and that was it. We didn't talk anymore. I broke down. My other friend tried to help me but it was no use. December 14th to March 14th. That's how long it was. He got new friends, and I just had to watch him have fun while I was just...not. When he apologized, he did it on Roblox. When I accepted his apology, he just said, "good" I'm still his friend to this day. I'm sure that mine and his friendship is toxic, but oh well. I normally don't really identify with villains because my life was pretty good so far... but Spinel's backstory hit me. Feeling abandonded/left out by friends is definitely something I can relate to, and a lot of other people too, I bet. It's a really powerful story.

I still can't hate Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz entirely. She's just a person. Sweet and loving, but also temperamental and selfish, deeply wise and thoughtful, but also very stupid and reckless. Good, bad, both, neither. She's a fantastic example of how even generally "good" and empathetic people can do very bad things if they don't think stuff through. Steven is proof that she was very serious about growing, learning, and trying to be a better person. She gave up everything for him, probably in hopes that he could do what she could not. Which he has. Love her or hate her, I'm in love with the depth and complexity that the Crewniverse has put into her character.

Pink abandoned Pearly for Greg, then just proofs into a baby! Pink/Rose is just such a classic user! She may be all nice and sweet, but she seems to just use that to get people on her side, doing what SHE wants! Her true fatal flaw is her selfishness!

As somebody who has experienced that kind of sudden, unexplained abandonment from friends in the past I can relate to Spinel. When that happened to me I struggled with depression and questioning my self-worth for a long time... I was confused and mad and didn't really have an outlet for my negative emotions at the time because facing them scared the crap out of me. I became so clingy to the people I had left that they eventually distanced themselves from me too. It's taken me years to really look back on all of that and reach a point of forgiveness. With time I saw that my old friends weren't bad people who only wanted to hurt me, some were busy, others just thoughtless, and some I had pushed away myself because I was just too unstable to form a healthy relationship with at that time. I know if they had known the pain they caused me, they would have wanted to do things differently. But those chances passed a long time ago. I still struggle with what was done, I have enough trust issues to fuel a never-ending furnace, but I don't hate them for it all anymore. I'm cracked but not broken and I'm proud of what I've done to make myself a better person in my own eyes, not for anybody else.

What Spinel said to Steven at the end of their final fight made me wanna die man! She was like "at least u found me entertaining, u actually liked me didn't u? What am I doing, why do I wanna hurt u so bad? I'm supposed to be ur friend, I just wanna be ur friend." That made me so sad, I felt so bad for her, she didn't deserve anything that happened to her!

All the crystal gems learnt how to grow and create there selfs with rose quartz, pearl learnt to be independent, ruby and sapphire became garnet, so obviously spinel would’ve learnt to make more friends, not be so clingy, and a little more independent, there was NO reason AT ALL for pink to abandon her like that...

I have rewatched this movie about 3 times already. I’m UPSET with Pink, and it honestly explains why she fell so hard for Greg and why “she felt she had to explain everything to” him, and why Steven was a way to start over, with new much wiser life.

Would bringing Spinel have been a good idea anyway? Yes, what Rose did was terrible, but seeing how Spinel was back then would have made it difficult for Pink/Rose to have the dual identity in the first place if you think about it. Plus, given what happened to the warps during the war it would have been impossible for her to get Spinel even if she thought about her.

I think for me I still like pink/rose. One of the biggest thinggs about the character is we are seeong her development backwards. She started off horrible but over time did change for the better. It Woudnt surprise me if rose had though back towards what happened with spinel/all her other mistakes as well When I see the scene of her talking to Steven (the video tape one) I think that clip still still rings to how she had changed as a person. Ans the amount of love she began to feel for other people/things ect

Not only did Pink go from understandable to straight up cruel Steven also wasn't at his best in the movie. He went pretty selfish and arrogant.

I can't help but feel like Pink came up with this whole plan. I cant help but feel like she made these mistakes, realized she didn't want to fix it, and decided to run away from her issues instead of solving them. Now, I'm not saying Pink planned meeting Greg, but I still feel like she knew that if she went to earth she'd be able to escape her problems. I feel like this didn't make sense cause I suck at putting my thoughts into words, but I tried to explain it.

Straight up this made me cry, what pink diamond did to spinel that was truly, they truly did her dirty she was just trying to be your friend and when she got her own coloy and she was just an afterthought which is the most terrible thing I ever saw her anger is justified.

Yes, Pink was abused. Does that justify her abuse towards people like pearl and spinel? Absolutely not. She's just a bad gem who only knew how to be bad. It's so weird how she loved earth so much but cared so little for living things like gems.

This really hit home with me. I’ve grown up with Crohn’s Disease, so I was a bit clingy to my friends, cuz when I wasn’t with my ‘friends’ I was usually sick at home or at doctor’s appointments. I was naive to it for a few years, but by junior high, I realized that a majority of my classmates wanted nothing to do with me, like hanging out after school or being invited to parties. And before I knew it, my so called ‘friends’ couldn’t be bothered to talk to me anymore, because I always got attention from teachers, and couldn’t always keep up with them. My fear of being abandoned led me to isolating myself from others, cuz I didn’t wanna risk getting close to other people who could ultimately leave me behind. It got so bad that I wanted people to hurt my feelings in the end, so I could fee, someway towards them, could these were people I aspired to hang-out with. And even with high-school I tried to isolate myself during 1st and 2nd year, like working alone on projects we could do in groups, eating alone in the cafeteria, not always going to clubs. But in the end, by junior and senior year, high-school environment’s was more forgiving, and the friends I made their are ones I wish I’d been able to meet with years ago. So I can say from firsthand experience, that if you’re ever abandoned or treated as an outcast, it will get better down the line. You’ve got this. 😔😊

I think that was revenge for the diamonds locking Pink up in jail and making someone experience eternal loneliness for who knows how long.. Dang pink has some issues.

When she was on the warp crying I literally cried like all she wanted was a friend and she just stood in space looking for her ONLY friend complete isolation feels like hell if you haven't experienced that before lucky you cause here I am remembering the past where everyone hated and isolated themselves away from me it's just sad to think about
