This week I finally get the engine running in the ongoing boat refit of MV Zephyrus. It was so exciting to get the engine started.
But the's a setback.
Every week I'll also introduce a beer of the week, sharing some of my favorite, and not so favorite beers.
Travels With Geordie T shirts!
I've set up an online store where you can pick up the Travels With Geordie T shirt in all sizes, even toddlers!

Travels With Geordie. A weekly video series about wooden boat restoration and liveaboard life for Peter Knowles and his dog, Geordie.
My day job is design and 3D visualization of custom homes.
If you're interested,...bit.ly/2AGi1wH
Some viewers may be interested in some previous videos about Land Rovers. They're at my previous channel, Riverport Rovers.

Here is the build series about my truck. A rather modified Series II Land Rover.
bit.ly/2ziYQbv
I rather silly build and road trip to the famous Land Rover Winter Romp in Maine.
bit.ly/2zjtPUW
A slightly less silly road trip to Cape Breton that does involve painting flames on a Land Rover.
bit.ly/2KlEKBx
The series that started it all. A crazy plan to build a Land Rover in one day from assorted bits lying around.

There's a few other videos that might be of interest at Riverport Rovers including the beginning of a Boler trailer refit.

Peter just wanted to say what a wonderful thing your videos are. I stumbled upon them when looking at cabin rebuilding on wooden boats and have made my way through them all this week. I'm working on a 1959 Owens 35' major overhaul in Campbell River and have to say this has really got me excited and inspired to get back at it . Keep up the great work looking forward to weekly videos.

Something you might consider for your hacked mounting timbers is to use metal cross members that attach to each side and actually strengthen each beam. Each can have a Vee to help with engine clearance. Unless you can fabricate them from stainless steel which may be expensive you might be able to make them from other non corrosive metal. You have to be thorough in your preparation for that to happen. High fives to you!!

@15:22 FYI, ABYC standards requires 2 clamps for both Exhaust and Fuel lines. Even tough you are using those wide Kodiak clamps. Wink Wink... ;-) Not sure if you know... You can get a corrugated version of that Hardwall Wet Exhaust hose which bends really easy. More money however... ;-)

Always great when it starts without any fuzz. To bad the heat exchanger was leaking. I have a local supplier for Fluid Film. I bought a small test bottle some years ago. And after seeing how good it was I have been using it for everything. My Land Rovers get it sprayed everywhere. It stops rust and loosen bolts. Just dragged home a 19 liter bucket😆

Nice work, side exahust is nice so you can do a quick look and make sure that u got cooling water. Also great tip on the hose with spray film. Try cutting the hose with a hacksaw then cutting the wire with a rigging cutter.( Wire rope cable cutter) I worked on a sail boat that had a exhaust that had a 3 inch ss. valve, old classic sailboat. Nice bled job never bled a engine that way always cracked the injectors. Easiest on I did was on a 671.
@TravelsWithGeordie

I fitted an exchange engine in an Iveco van once. A pukka Iveco motor and very little needed to be swapped from one engine to the other, new fuel filters etc already installed. Got everything done, time for the first spin. It started instantly, and I immediately switched off thinking something was wrong. I didn't know at the time that Iveco delivered then as a running engine.

I had just installed a brand new engine into a machine that I was rebuilding. I had it to the point where it was time to start. This was a complete rebuild we were doing, every last nut and bolt out, all new hydraulics, hoses everything. I just wanted to bump the engine over once or twice, just to see if there was any leaks or other issues. Hit the key to bump the engine over and away it went. Pretty much scared the hell out of me, but once the shock wore off, a good feeling. The next machine, not so good. Had Detroit Diesel on the way to see why the new engine would not start. Gave it one more try and away it went. You win some, you lose some..

Hey Peter at the beginning of this video you were driving the Landy and I noticed that your steering wheel had a lot of slack in it either it needs tie rod ends and bushings replaced or some slack taken out on the adjuster of your steering gear sloppy steering is not good for the old Land Rover have a good day and cheers

As quick as that started, a sure sign compression is excellent. Have you checked trans Atlantic diesel for a replacement heat exchanger?

Nice one, sounds great too shame about the tube stack, I had mine repaired by a radiator specialist I suppose the ones in the six cylinders were different

I've taken the tube stack from my engine to a rad shop. Fingers crossed.

Bummer on the heat exchanger! It's always so disappointing when something like that halts a project. Engine starting on the first crank is awesome though!

Probably to late but you want that aftermarket elbow lower than the manifold by having it at that angle your real close to water backing up
@TravelsWithGeordie
@TravelsWithGeordie 5 лет назад
Thanks Tom, good point, It is somthing I gave some thought, Perhaps it's not easy to see but the final angle was quite low. I'm feeling pretty good about it.
@reallybuddy3259
@reallybuddy3259 5 лет назад
now in second thought the pipe connector you have adapting the two together has no cooling and its an angle near the manifold which could build up heat? wood boat glowing heat = bad. I have made up adapters for boat manifolds a section of mandrel bent stainless inside a larger section of mandrel bent stainless with a simple 4 bolt flange and a water fitting . That way its all cooled and you can extend the inner tube a foot or so down the exhaust to guarantee no backup. Also flows much better on the exhaust with only 87 hp you cant afford to lose to many.

That sounds like a splendid fabrication. Sadly, that sort of bling is far beyond my budget. I'll be wrapping the uncooled section in heat wrap and a heat shield. Should be ok.Thanks for the splendid idea though.
@tomhutchins1046
@tomhutchins1046 5 лет назад
Actually its fairly cheap but does require some welding. Heat wrap is not for long term use especially in a moist environment. I have seen heat wrapped headers crumble when used on the street. It holds the heat in and cooks the carbon out of the steel . Also soaks up moister. True would take longer on a pipe fitting but still a problem . A U shaped heat shield spaced up away from the exhaust then some fiberglass insulation then a top U shaped shield would probably be the best way to protect the wood floor and maintain some airflow. Could also be used without the fiberglass Interesting project
