What’s the environmental impact of online shopping and what are the solutions to make it more sustainable?
Climate Lab is produced by the University of California in partnership with Vox. Hosted by conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan, the videos explore the surprising elements of our lives that contribute to climate change and the groundbreaking work being done to fight back. Featuring conversations with experts, scientists, thought leaders and activists, the series demystifies topics like nuclear power, food waste and online shopping to make them more approachable and actionable for those who want to do their part. Sanjayan is an alum of UC Santa Cruz, a Visiting Researcher at UCLA and the CEO of Conservation International.

A lot of these comments are arguing that you have to drive to the store, so its better to do online. Guys, Vox acknowledges that. They are saying that it’s better to do standard shipping vs two day. That’s the intent of the video.

this is actually a great idea-when people say “two day shipping” and “five day shipping” for the same price, they think, why would i voluntarily choose the longer shipping time with no incentive? but if they see “green option”, then they’ll understand that it’s the more environmentally friendly option.

In australia we’re lucky to get a package within a 2 weeks after we purchased the product! On numerous occasions the shipping costs more than the actual product. And free shipping is a luxury! It’s also not uncommon to wait 2 months for a package. Americans take free shipping and the recourses for 2 day shipping for granted, bc down under we’re so isolated from all other countries, shipping for anything is a night mare!

I wish you could opt out of the bubble wrap and packing stuff, too! For Amazon you can select shipping prime items together or as they become available which I always select together because I hate all of the extra boxes/bubble wrap laying around. There have been many times where I got a whole box full of packing materials that weren't needed or where an envelope would have been fine.

YES DR. SANJAYAN IS BACK! He's always been my favorite Vox reporter. Btw in Canada the cheapest option is the longest. We have Standard 5-8 Business Days 5.00$ Rushed 3-4 Business Days 8.00$ Express 1-2 Days 11.80$ So being cheap I've always taken standard, and the products usually get to my doorstep in 2.5-3 weeks because it's Canada Post and temporarily losing packages is their job

I drove a delivery truck for a former job. You don't need new signals alerting drivers that light is going to change. We called it be aware of stale green lights. It's a matter of looking ahead for the crosswalk countdown and knowing the light timing, which comes from experience on a route.

It's relevant in understanding why some people would choose the free option rather than the standard option. Shipping fees are extremely expensive, though I do online shopping if its something I really cannot find at the stores. But that's looking at something that is 35 dollars and add shipping makes it 40 dollars. While I only make 40 dollars, that's all my money. Shipping cost need to either be lowered or add a fee to faster shipping.

even before this video came out, I've been questioning why amazon doesn't have some reusable packaging program. For example, imagine you can chose to get your delivery in a tote made of hard recycled plastic, on the condition that you pay for the tote. Then you can return the tote at a local pickup location/warehouse and get the money back for the purchase of the tote. I mean, amazon operates it's own delivery service now so I think they should have a program like this for people who don't like over polluting.

We’re literally dying years earlier due to pollution in our cities and no one is taking the issue seriously. (If they were, cars would be 100% banned from city centres and rapid electric transport, in the form of streetcars and trolleybuses would be the mode of transit. That’s a whole lot easier than pie in the sky concepts YET ITS NOT BEING DONE.)

So, I am a driver in a major freight company. Now, when there are trailers that go on the longer day routes, they do hold them until they are full. But that isn't going to reduce overall emissions, since they have to send me with or without freight, so they will just send me with either one or two empties, or potentially 3 where 3 are legal. The trailers have to move to keep trailer flow even, so it would make more sense to just ship the half full trailers. So in some ways the 2 day shipping would make little difference, at least at the behemoth company I work for.

That wifi talking is brilliant. They can put it GPS systems, gps apps, cars, etc... That way all cars can tell people a recommend velocity, when to slow down, stop or even eventually put in an "auto acceleration." That way people can drive closer than humanly possible and take off at the same time. This would be a first step in the driverless car future we will eventually reach. Plus it is not as scary for people to adopt compared to the whole "I am not letting a computer drive for me?!?!" idea people have.

As a ups worker this is kinda wrong. With 2 day delivery we fill up two 26foot trailers at the same time hitch them up with most packages filling it up all the way it's to save time and get most packages out to the next building faster. If there is a lack of packages in truck most of the time its due to a lack if packages heading to a rural area with a lower population and thus not enough flow to fill the trucks 100%

5:00 "What if online shops offered a green shipping option?". Some stores already do here in Sweden. Not saying everybody use it, I certainly don't, but the option is there for people who aren't in a hurry and want to be as environmental friendly as possible. I believe the actual execution of being "green" is a bit different on their end, though, where rather than slower shipment and smarter delivery, it's about calculating the emissions for the delivery and then compensating by funding environmental projects that plants trees or do research into emission reduction, stuff like that. As well as shipping your product in fully recyclable packages, including the packing material. So not entirely the same thing, but the same in spirit, and still giving customers the option to be more environmental friendly. And a lot of the actual shipping companies here supposedly already do what the video suggest when it comes to making sure delivery trucks never go out half full, and making sure the packages in the trucks are all to the same general area. And that's without any additional fee or being a slower delivery option. So yay for saving the environment :). Granted, Scandinavia has traditionally been ahead when it comes to being environmentally friendly. But still, crossing my fingers the US starts transitioning more and more towards that too. But it's of course understandable that it'd be more difficult in a much larger country (especially in a country where most companies put revenue above everything else).

1. "Green" option is misleading. It suggests that its actually good for the environment as opposed to less harmful. 2. If people are shopping online, that means they're probably not driving to the store to buy those items, right? Doesn't that take cars off the road? One can argue that two-day shipping serves as an incentive for people to buy online.
@Kanuk97
@Kanuk97 6 лет назад

Why don’t the companies fix the issue of carbon emissions? This is like the recycling campaign put on by the plastic/soda/bottle industry a few decades ago. Make the companies invest in electric cars. Tesla came out with an electric 18-wheeler. Get congress to implement a carbon cap to the companies. I pay for the 2 day shipping through an annual fee. Is that going to be reduced if I don’t get 2 day shipping? Probably not. Why do I have to suffer and still pay for the 2 day shipping?? The companies win, and the customer pays for it. Enforce a carbon cap on the companies, and the problem can be managed.

The process of making a new vehicle is often a bigger carbon footprint than the entire expected carbon footprint of driving the vehicle. Trying to replace the entire fleet of trucks we have on the roads with Tesla's would just cause more problems. It's a complicated problem because almost every action of any significance that you try to take you have to walk back to the origin of the parts, manufacturing, and other infrastructure involved and usually you find non-renewable energy at every step.

There are of course time-sensitive things, perishable items, even live animals, but if we choose not to rush a postal office for a new lamp or a book we are starting somewhere. @SyukriLajin
@SyukriLajin 6 лет назад
true. and there's another issue, if the problem is volume, wouldn't discouraging people from using it cause less volume for each travel? say 10 people used fast shipping in a housing area, that is 10 item per truck going to the place. if only 4 person used fast shipping, then it's just 4 item per truck, which have to go to the area either way. Shouldn't we be encouraging people to use it more so that there will be more volume for each travel?

Yes, we can: by legislating regulations on the market. That's what "the free market" really used to mean. What we call now as "free market" is actually "free for you, but I need every protection" - protection only for corporations and capital, removing democratic control of population over how we run our society. In this neoliberal society, individual citizens are required to cut carbon emission by themselves, but there's no limits for the corporations, the entities which produce the biggest amount of carbon emission in our planet.

TBH green button is dumb... technology and logistics can solve this. US has this problem because its logistics is based on diesel trucks... Many countries don't have such a problem, like China has free same-day delivery almost country-wide using hi-speed train systems and electric bikes.
@ghostbirdofprey
@ghostbirdofprey 6 лет назад
The worst part about that is that the US has one of the most robust freight rail systems in the world, the problem is it's used for industry rather than commerce. They ship raw materials around by train and distribute finished goods from domestic factories and ports to warehouses, but it's not used for shipping packages from state to state unless you're doing it cross country (and even then not often)

Zach Guo I don't see why you disparaged the green shipping solution. Your suggestion of trains and electric vehicles for delivery is a good one, though it isn't mutually exclusive with the suggestion provided by Dr. Sanjayan. They are in fact complimentary solutions, but Dr. Sanjayan's solution could be more readily implemented than yours. His suggestion is to implement changes to websites that will signal companies to utilize already existing operations. The biggest hurdle businesses would overcome is probably moderately increased storage demands at fulfillment and distribution centers while orders are compiled, assuming the green option is popular. Your solution involves refitting America's rail network for high-speed trains, purchasing thousands of electric bikes, hiring thousands of scooter delivery boys, retraining and redesigning shipment fulfillment networks for bikes rather than trucks, and trying to find a buyer for a fleet of trucks. Furthermore, regardless of the transportation technologies employed, scarce energy is still consumed in shipping, and the worldwide energy supply still relies heavily on fossil fuels. Electric transports and trains are more efficient and account for less C02 emissions than diesel trucks, but they do contribute. If the solution you propose is all that is needed to solve pollution problems, why is China among the countries with the worst air quality in the world?
@zachguo3374
@zachguo3374 6 лет назад
Solution relying on consumers will at best have a marginal effect. Read history, problems like this were always solved by technological advancement or legal action. About your 'Furthermore', work on your logics, so you think all pollution is generated by delivering packages??
@willtempleton4870
@willtempleton4870 6 лет назад
Historically, Legal action has had limited success correcting social issues that result from consumer behavior outside of fascist and communist oligarchies. The U.S.'s war on drugs/addiction is a perfect example. Drugs are illegal, but there is demand, so there's a drug problem. No amount of punishment and no border wall will prevent drugs from being a problem. Legal actions driven by consumer/voter pressure are much more successful. An example is consumer demands for greater food safety led to the meat packing industry improving standards and the FDA to regulate those standards. That is, all solutions to public problems in capitalist republics ultimately rely on consumers. By adding green shipping options, it raises awareness for those that are unaware of the environmental consequences of their shipping decisions, and gives them a choice to behave consistently with their values. Being frequently reminded which of our decisions have an effect on the environment, more people will begin to shift their values toward environmental conservation. That eventual overwhelming public consensus will make consumer driven legal action (i.e. state support for clean, high-speed rail) a legitimate option, which is currently is not. About my "Furthermore", it seems I was misunderstood completely. My point was that trains and electric bikes still have a carbon footprint. Trains and electric bikes relocate the pollution generated in shipping from the roadways to the railways and the smokestacks of the coal-fired power plant. Consolidating shipments by allowing for longer shipping times will reduce the carbon footprint of whatever shipping technologies are used. As I said previously, your suggestion is complementary to the one presented in this video. Every step toward more energy conservation is a step in the right direction, because currently most of our energy is derived from fossil fuels. My comment about the poor air quality in China was meant to highlight the flaw in your view that using trains and electric bikes is the only solution needed for the problem. Lastly, I think you might find you have better conversations with people if you work on a less condescending tone (eg "green button is dumb", "read history", "work on your logics"). It's possible to differ in opinion with someone without resorting to disparagement.

I love this. I once sent a mail to Amazon to ask for a low level of packaging. At the time I couldn’t tell them to just wait 5 days and send me one box. Nail polish remover already comes in a single use plastic container that is fairly indestructible. It doesn’t need extra bubble wrap and a box. When I check out, instead of “gift wrap available”, say “reduced packaging option available”. While you’re at it, how about collecting my previous boxes and, say, pretty glass container for soap that slowly makes it’s way back to the soap company. Granted then you’d need an unpacking facility in addition to your packing facility but maybe this could be paid for by a refundable deposit on the refillable container. Also I really want to have the option to gift wrap everything together. I once sent a babyshower present to a friend who received it in drips and drabs - was kinda awkward

Amazon does offer in house incentives for no rush shipping tbh my issue is the sheer amount of trash I have to throw out just to get my items, I dont need something packed in several layers of packaging unless its fragile.... they need to reduce the waste produced through shipping practices, especially all that damn plastic puffy stuff....
