The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) builds on the legacy of the original Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, which sought to ensure that all students have access to equitable educational opportunities. This June 27 webinar highlights ways in which state, district, and school leaders can leverage ESSA to continue to pursue the foundational goal of educational equity. Discussants Karmen Rouland, Center for Education Equity at the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium, and Caitlin Howley, Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center, shared a data-driven and outcome-based equity framework, examined key ESSA equity provisions, and discussed examples of best practices underway across states and districts. Webinar presenters also included Beth Olanoff, Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), who discussed strategies her state is using to emphasize indicators of growth in relation to equity, and Paul Fleming, Tennessee Department of Education, described a new resource to support school, district, and community leaders who are committed to providing and sustaining equitable outcomes for all students.
