Good video! My question is aren’t the traits you listed at the end traits that a good woman must have as well? If that’s the case, then why even use masculinity to be the standard of what is good for men? If there’s no difference between what makes a good man and a good woman, then why separate the two, why not just strive to be a good person? Women rarely ask themselves how to be good as a woman, it’s more often just how to be good as a person. So I wonder why men constantly revert to gender when deciding how they should behave? I think it could be that men are usually expected to conduct themselves a certain way by society, for example, to protect the weak, so they can’t separate how they should behave from their gender. Instead of contributing to this ideal, you deviated from the typical gender roles that people force on men and listed more broad characteristics which I appreciate. But why call it being masculine if women should be that way too? What does a man who is “feminine” look like in this world view? Is it failing to do what you listed? Femininity means acting like women typically do. If that’s the case, that implies that typical women don’t update their world view when given new information or they get caught up in their emotions. If it’s bad for men to be feminine because it means these negative traits, how can being feminine be okay for women? I think encouraging men to only be more masculine above all is limiting at best and sexist at worst. Some people are going to be masculine, some are going to be more feminine, and some are going to be in between. My view is that we should make expectations on men more elastic, if they want to be stereotypically masculine (eg. big muscles), there should be no problem, but also no issue if they don’t want to, which is not the case right now. Where pursuing masculinity becomes an issue is if you believe it makes you better than those who are women or who act like women. Encouraging masculinity itself as the ideal contributes to this, no matter your definition.

Yes, this was kind of the point I wanted to underline-that much of what makes a good man, is simply just being a good person. However, I still think there are more traditionally masculine-specific characteristics, closer to what men are biologically predisposed to doing (which mostly focus on protection through physical aspects) that would help a lot of men feel like they have more purpose. But I agree with your point that expectations on men should be more elastic, and tried to argue this within the video

This is a great point! This really made me think, love this response. You are right that much of what makes a good man, is a good person. However, I see a problem that people are saying masculinity is the opposite of femininity. It's a common mistake and I don't blame people at all, I thought the same as well. In terms of Yin and Yang, (like light and dark) yes, but with humans it's not so straightforward, there isn't a stark contrast. We are a mix of both. Some more then others, but still a mix. I wouldn't view them as opposing forces, rather analogous. Think of a color wheel. Masculinity and femininity are not blue and orange. They're more like a light blue and a dark blue. They're in the same field and right next to each other, but different intensities. What's interesting is that together, those colors cause a calming effect, which is how an ideal relationship should be. Anyways, I would say the opposite of masculinity is immaturity. Same with femininity. I don't want to insult mature females and say are the opposite of mature males. Some may say that with good intentions, other may say that in sexist and insulting ways. Being immature, incompetent, and hurtful to yourself and others is something i think we all agree on is not useful. There is a mix of both, masculine and feminine in men and women. I heard a saying that one guitar chord can play two different sounds. Think of that as masculinity and femininity. There are two different approaches. A man and women can do all things a good person does and be great men and women. On the other hand, masculinity and femininity is the most clearest in terms of relationships.There has to be a balance. For instance, masculinity and femininity isn't just a human thing, it's all over the animal kingdom. From there you see some basic things, although primitive, of the dynamic there. But what makes Humans special is that we evolve and change. I'm sure some further evolved animals could do the same. Men could do feminine things, like me for instance! I'm really in touch with my emotions for seeing things pleasing to the eye. That doesn't make me less of a man though. This is a great thing. And women can do more masculine things as well, such as having incredible muscles by deadlifting and keeping in shape, but it doesn't make her less then a woman though. Also pretty awesome. Like i said, men and women have both feminine and masculine energies. But to end it off, i think Cole is saying, and what i agree is, is to be the person who you want to be (with morals as well of course.) And masculinity and femininity are not just biological as i'm sure you know, but also constructed which I agree with you 100%. Skirts, the color pink, and creating art and so on are not strictly masculine or feminine. those are human cultural perceptions. All in all, take the best of both worlds and see what works for you. Only you know what's best for you and that's enough. No matter what your orientation, these values and ways of being are both for you, and both necessary to be a well-rounded and good human being:)

@@2storycory2 Then we should reassure men too. But why does that have to look like “if you do these things, great job, you’re masculine” and not “you can be masculine or feminine, as long as you keep the interests of others and yourself in balance”. I get it, it’s idealistic, but shouldn’t we still hope we can change things for men?

Have you considered that all of the depression, anxiety and unaliveness is not caused by a philosophical crisis, but brain inflammation from not eating a human specific diet? 40% of 18 year olds have a mental illness in the US. Kids are getting fatty liver disease. Half the adult population is obese with several chronic conditions. People are making their brain cells out of inflammatory seed oils, eating endocrine disruptors and pesticides correlated with mental illness.

The way I interpret the Marcus Aurelius quote is this, every single mans path to their true masculinity is unique, sure there are patterns but its unique all the same, and because of this it is arguably pointless to discuss about you individually masculinity as the only way your gonna actually manifest it is by doing. The way I view it is that masculinity is about progressive contentment, you know and have accepted what your strengths and limitations are however you still push for the improvement of yourself and others around you.
@ghourmi
@ghourmi 9 месяцев назад
I see it differently. Everyone is unique, different. Everyone perceives masculinity in their own way. So, if you are a man and you feel masculine, then everything you do is masculine. You be yourself. Just do what makes you happy and try to make others happy along the way.

I am not either man or woman, I am a human. That means I have feminine and masculine side within me. Because I am in male body I have tendancy to the masculine side but also I have a freedom to choose who I want to be. In life there has to be balance just as in our nature of masculinity and femininity. All people, male and female, should have the qualities you describe. Deep down we are all the same. The first thing I thought about when I read the title was the part „to be a man“. Isn’t it a limited view to only think that there is one way to be a man? Wouldn’t that make everyone a carbon copy? And wouldn’t that mean that we would lack the individual strengths that help our society progress in many different ways through splitting tasks The ending where qualities were named also left me thinking, that these are qualities that everyone, regardless of their gender, would profit from embodying. Why are these qualities supposed to be masculine? And why do we even need the harsh differentiation between feminine and masculine. I think most people embody both qualities feminine and masculine. I also sometimes get the feeling that feminine qualities are badly looked upon

Yeah, part is being a good man is just being a good person. That’s a point I made in my masculinity crisis video. Masculine qualities are blamed as the causes of all of the worlds violence. The phrase toxic masculinity is used as a cause for almost every crime a man commits. Nobody talks about toxic femininity. Everyone equates femininity with love and nurturing. I have never met a person who has ever thought a bad thing about feminiinity. How are you getting this conception that femininity is looked down upon?

Amazing video! I think that every individual has a specific balance between masculine and feminine. Men generally feel better when they are more masculine. And that masculine or feminine within the person is expressed in unique ways. So, i think that when men live life according societys ideas on masculinity they give their power away. We see courage as masculine. And what takes a lot of courage is to be authentic. For some men it means getting in touch with their feelings ,for some being more proactive, building a body ect.. Every man needs something different, which will make him more balanced. I think the most masculine thing to do is to define masculinity for yourself

I question of whether masculinity is objective or not is so elusive. While I appreciate the philosophical ideas here I feel like it's not really necessary because the question is intuitively very obvious, of course it's not objective, it's a shared idea we have in our minds, not a physical property of the universe. The question should rather be if this idea is helpful or not, how it influences our emotions and society, and if we should keep it, transform it, or disregard it completely. I'm only half-way through the video so maybe that will come later
@StillCisTho42

Is such a wild ride seeing this video coming from more progressive creators where the idea of masculinity and femininity as a social construct is already accepted, especially when you give examples on how subjective "masculine science" is, and then call it objective at 20:41 or how the characteristic you give for a great man are just characteristics for a great person in general.
@daridari755
@daridari755 4 месяца назад
I like the idea that you put forward about the thesis, antithesis and synthesis, related to masculinity. When you mentioned that a lot of the purposelessness that men purport to be facing today isnt purely a regression towards a collapse of masculinity, but a move towards the synthesis of a more up to date version of masculinity, it made sense to me. It's a good way to frame it; it sounds like, if Hegel's theories are applied to how masculinity evolves, there's a liminal state between opposing or different ideas that can seem overwhelming in the short term, but on the other side of that, leads to a more evolved and pressure-formed idea of masculinity. It gives some hope, that whilst there might be some purposelessness whilst men are figuring out what masculinity means to them, it is a temporary purposlessness, and is followed by a newer more robust idea, closer to the 'true essence' of masculinity. Good video, I enjoyed listening 👍
@daridari755
@daridari755 4 месяца назад
I also liked the way that you framed the two main schools of thought on the topic. It shed some light on where both camps are coming from, in terms of their beliefs. I personally like to think of the idea that in each of us we have both masculinity and femininity, and whilst they are somewhat linked to gender/sex, there's a lot of variation in each of us. I also like to look at masculine as external acting energy and feminine as internal reflective, though I believe there is both a small amount of masculine energy within feminine energy, and vice versa. Like the yin inside the Yang and vice versa. The external displays of being well dressed, fit/healthy (or even athletic), protective, financially stable are all, to me, reflections of inner truths and values. For example, an inner sense of dignity can influence someone to dress more elegantly and someone who values self discipline enacts this by taking care of their body. It seems like there's a feminine element to, what I'd label 'fully realised masculinity', in so much that the external expression depends on the internal conditions of that person. And similarly, the external expression can also influence inner beliefs and conditions, perhaps in a 'fake it till you make it' fashion (to put it simply). Anyway, again - cool video. Interesting, balanced take on it. I haven't seen many other videos showing someone take a step back to look at more than one perspective, in the same way you did in yours. Kudos.

American culture exists, and not only in the form of obesity. "I have a dream". "I can't breathe". "Don't shoot". "You are either with us, or against us". Regarding the main topic, and the way the issue is being approached: it suggests that you can simply pick and choose masculine qualities based upon an understanding of it, and freedom of choice exists in relation to such character traits. However, we are who we are, regardless of the academic and theoretical arguments that exist within the confines of our minds. The more we attempt to define a particular set of ideas about something, the less it becomes relevant to pursue having greater clarity about it. Example: What if we call a tree something else? Well, it will still be a tree, regardless. And...only a tree truly knows itself as such. Thus, we cannot make lead into gold just because we think that we know about the fundamentals of alchemy. Masculinity is a relative term used to describe a particular character trait that exists only in our minds, by virtue of being rationalized and then transcribed into something that can be expressed through words. Tell me what music sounds like? It is something that will certainly be lost in translation. Masculinity, like music, becomes an irrational issue for debate because it attempts to address something that is entirely subjective.

Wise video. I think everyone should really take time out of their lives to really figure out what masculinity means to them. For one, I agree with you on that there are flaws to traditional masculinity but I also strive towards being a traditionally masculine man yet a kind man. It's a pretty new topic for me, as I haven't done much research on it like I have done on many other things but I think your path to being a good man - a masculine man should be the thing that feels natural. You can't really force yourself to be someone you're not, and while there are things that most people should change from them selves, for example being lazy, you can't force yourself to be someone else. And if you do, you're going to most likely live a pretty miserable life. Great video, something about it really resonated with me (must've been the philosophy stuff, as it's something I've been getting into recently), I rarely ever leave comments this long :)

I don't agree with your conclusion at all. You listed a bunch of qualities that are good and virtuous, and say these are what makes you a man. Why do these qualities represent masculinity? Would these characteristics, like being selfless and caring for others not be good on women too? You are talking about what makes a virtuous human, which is a totally legit question to ask, but I don't see the point of fitting it into the narrative of masculinity. Masculinity is simply a collection of ideas and physical traits that would remind you of the male sex, they can be helpful like muscles and rationality, or bad like aggressiveness or dominance, but masculine is just the term to describe them. Nobody should strive to be masculine, people should strive to be virtuous, which will oftentimes overlap with masculinity but not necessarily.

So interesting i you post this after ive been thinking about this so much recently. Currently i think it does and doesnt exist at the same time sadly dont really have people to actually talk too about this so it still baking. Seems to me masculinity is your views of strength, mental or physical. Some people think men who bottle their emotions are manly where i view it more as if you are uncapable of understanding urself and your own needs, its a weakness of the mind. I also think masculinity and femininity are 2 sides of the same coin and are derived from the same thing, the ideal role model of what you want to be, but people have different ideas of what that is. As our world grows bigger and more complex lots of young men like myself are bombarded with different views and told the opposite shit over and over making it harder to solidify who you aspire to be

I thought most of the video was great, with a lot of thought provking ideas. However I would be careful on your choice of wording about one of the things you said at 17:12. I don't think it's objectively true that all men need to have XY chromosomes. That not only stumbles into a "sex vs gender" debate, but also overlooks the fact that even biological sex doesn't always work that way either. It is possible (albeit rare) for XX biological males (which such sex characteristics recognisable at birth) and vice versa. I assume the statement wasn't made with any negative intent here, and the point you intended on making was something else. Therefore a slight rewording would probably go a long way. I would also like to add, the things at 24:20 I would argue are positive traits for EVERYONE to embody, regardless of whether you go by the pronoun "he". Other than that, great video!

Masculinity isn't neither of the ideas put forward, it's both. Masculinity and femininity are the dual aspects of human nature, so understanding human nature is integral to understanding masculinity and femininity. So what is the nature of humanity? Half god, half animal. There's a part of masculinity that objectively exists, that we intuitively understand thanks to our knowledge of good and bad. We can observe that type of masculinity in animals. Then there's the cultural aspect of masculinity that we collectively craft together through the Logos. This is the divine part of masculinity that is unfortunately flawed due to our imperfections. After watching your video the analogy I thought of was that masculinity is like clay, it's material components are immutable, but the shape it takes can be crafted.

Good video but I strongly disagree that there isn't a noumenon of masculinity. As a Taoist and a Hegelian I believe that the binary of yin and yang (ie feminine and masculine) is literally foundational to the universe, and everything that exists is born out of the creative synergy of the two. We can see Masculinity and Femininity manifest even on the most fundamental level of subatomic Physics- in Fermions and Bosons. Or in Politics as Right and Left ideologies. Or in Music as Rhythm and Melody. This binary exists at every level of analysis because the universe is in some way Fractal and this binary is a pattern that repeats everywhere, always with the same characteristics: Masculine is hard and independent and individual and focused on building structure and direction; Feminine is social and flexible and focused on appreciating things for what they are and helping things grow to be more beautiful and more interconnected with each other

Hum... I have more a realist approach in philosophy (even if I think reason is not the sole access to the reality). I think many men were excluded from the "be a man" category, because they weren't manly enough. Otherwise, I agree, pretty much, of what a good man could be. I would add, also, the importance of male community, how they can help each other, because I observed many men focused their attention on women, and then their family, and not on other men so much.
@fergimasta
@fergimasta 9 месяцев назад
Don’t make it too complicated. Your job is to protect, provide and father. Focus on anything that helps you in these things. Like being fit, know how to fight, make money, spend quality time with your kids and raise them right. I think people need to start asking not only what it means to be a woman but what it is to be a citizen. What does our country need not only from men but from women?
@treeforged9097
@treeforged9097 8 месяцев назад
Learning to fight has not helped with protecting anyone for more than a hundred years. No amount of fighting is going to get you to be apple to stop a bullet. The idea that you are ever going to have to physically fight someone as an adult in a western country for protection is a ridiculous idea. The amount of time men are now wasting learning sports games like Brazilian jujitsu, which is a game by the way, is preventing them from doing something actually useful with there lives. Women don't want providers they want to provide for themselves. Women also don't want kids anymore so they can pursue there career. So in summery protecting is no longer needed and providing and fathering is no longer wanted.

It’s an interesting topic Cole. I think one way you would look to answer the question would be to analyze what masculine traits are displayed across species and nature. When taking this view point I think the answer would be displaying traits that would most likely lead to reproduction and continuing of the lineage. Issues this day and age is what used to work for our species merely 20 years ago has changed. To qualify back then for instance your job would play a big factor. But women are progressing on that front as well so it’s made it more difficult for men to fulfill this capacity. Not complaining just an example. I think masculinity is evolving. It could go dangerously wrong with the path we seeing in the increased feminization of me. But I like to be optimistic where I believe it could be going down a more beautiful path. With the wisdom we now have and creators such as yourself pushing the narratives you are, to seek purpose and to reject the consumeristic lifestyle, it might evolve into something we haven’t seen before. Where we have a mixture of how to live fulfilling lives as men but also able to consider and adjust to the changing times.

This just feels like further support that we need to liberate ourselves from these myopic views of gender. Masculinity and femininity are overwhelmingly subjective and individualized, so the collective social construct is foundationally shaky. To feel at peace with our masculinity or femininity must also mean liberating ourselves from the inherent irrationality of what it means to be a man or a woman.
@redpillcatholicism

Why it’s hard to be a man is because man is the one who altered his own nature from good to evil. Once then, we found ourselves climbing to seek virtue from the pit of vice. The only thing is because of the disorder we put upon ourselves, we cannot achieve true masculinity by our own merits for we will always be inclined to sin as a chair cannot fix its legs when broken. To be a man, you must seek Jesus Christ and do as he commands.
