Nahhh metal in Europe was so much better and creative at the time. Nu metal was just the same American commercial response, just combined grunge, rap, and sprinkled some thrash. Meanwhile in Europe there was an explosion of subgenres. The best US bands at the time were not part of the nu metal scene.
I agree the first time I was introduced to metal was at a friends house ages ago, they where playing “down with the sickness” by disturbed, it opened my mind up to lots of different music and I’ve been hooked on metal since then.

1994-1996: Nu metal emerged from a variety of influences, including rap rock, funk metal, and alternative metal. Bands such as Rage Against the Machine, Faith No More, and Tool were early influences. Korn's self-titled debut album in 1994 is often cited as the first nu metal album, with its heavy guitar riffs, hip hop-inspired beats, and raw emotional lyrics. 1997-1999: Nu metal exploded in popularity, with a number of bands achieving mainstream success. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot were among the most successful, with their aggressive sound and visually striking performances. Other notable bands include Deftones, System of a Down, and Papa Roach. 2000-2002: Nu metal continued to dominate the charts, with Linkin Park, P.O.D., and Disturbed among the most successful bands. However, the genre began to face criticism for being too formulaic, with many bands employing similar elements in their music and visual style. 2003-2004: Nu metal's popularity began to wane, with many bands moving away from the genre or breaking up. Linkin Park's album "Meteora" was a commercial success, but signaled a shift towards a more mainstream rock sound. Other bands, such as Korn and Papa Roach, experimented with different styles and incorporated more electronic elements into their music.
I think people forget that Hoobastank was arguably a nu-metal band too, with the Reason just being such a mega hit ballad it overshadowed their bops like Crawling in the Dark
Fun fact: LB won the award for Rollin in 2001. On 9/10/2001, the port authority sent a congrats letter to the band thanking them for using the buildings in the video…
Nu metal is probably the only genre that instantly sounds like home, makes me feel like a kid again. I was born in 96', i remember nu-metal was played everywhere, radio, tv.. then out of no where the genre fazed out, then everything went emo... It's crazy how music evolves so fast
@@danman6669 I think the backlash against Hair Metal was worse than the backlash against Nu-Metal. And Hair Metal was definitely bigger. Def Leppard (twice), Bon Jovi (twice), and Guns N Roses all have albums that sold well over 10 million units. Nu Metal has Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory and Evanescence - Fallen but neither reach Appetite For Destruction or Slippery When Wet sales levels... At some point both "Hair Metal" and "Nu Metal" were pejoratives, thankfully that crap has passed...
@@evanblake5252 Standards? I know I’m no professional myself, but it is a fact without a doubt. The music that you hear where today’s people label it as “rock/hip hop” is all counterfeit.
Not me. I always found it corny when I was in middle school back around ‘99-‘02, which deterred me from getting into metal for a while. This video reminded me of how corny it was lol (except for SOAD) Thank god some of the friends I made at my first job got me into Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Sepultura because those bands got me hooked on metal. From there I got into Thrash, Death Metal, Stoner Metal, etc and the rest is history!
I totally wasn’t expecting to be hit with Fungus-era Incubus as the second pick! They absolutely wore their influences on their sleeves early on (RHCP, Mr. Bungle, Primus), but I always thought they had their own sound. The whole band were individually great musicians, but particularly the playfully weird lyrics and the very memorable and hummable guitar solos always stood out to me. SCIENCE would blow my teenage mind, and thoroughly ruined all other music for a solid 12 months after I first heard it.
Nobody EVER talks about SCIENCE too which is so sad because it's one of my favorite albums ever. Hardly anyone believes when I call early Incubus "metal" lol all they know is Make Yourself and Morning View
@@dcmastermindfirst9418- Which is a wierd thing considering JD has mentioned that they didn't wanna get mixed up with all that, lol. Ironically most Nu-Metal bands modeled after them, lol.
The thing I like about Linkin park is that they were mature and built their lyricism from hard struggles, and it tied into the awesome instrumental, and plus, mike shinoda was a great rapper, and it was amazing how they went from mike to Chester while the instrumental turns on the style of their lyrics.
Linkin Park habe ich mit Anfang 20 vergöttert. Jetzt bin ich fast 42 und die Band ist immer noch in meinem Kopf. I haved tears in my eyes when i heared a New Song Lost. Everybody who know the Story of Chester can hear the pain in his voice... Linkin Park helped many young people in bad times. No other Band give me the spirit of Linkin Park.
yeah, I love a lot of the bands here like Deftones, Slipknot, SOAD, Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc... but Linkin Park stands out in a way that feels more timeless than even most other rock bands.
I'd like to add, Pantera and groove metal in general was pretty influential for Nu Metal, the downtuning, the attitude, the slower pace and riffs, the very rhytmic-like and groove in general.
Thank you for putting Saliva on here! Also Believe by Disturbed and Trapt’s self titled album came out in 2002. Shoulda had Back Inti Your System by Saliva in 02.
I graduated high school in 99 so this music perfectly captures that transition from being with all my friends, to everyone going their separate ways for college. The early songs we would listen to together vs. the later ones I listened to without them. Sad feelings, to be honest.
Thank you so much!!! I was trying to find incubus a certain shade of green for over 20 years. Typing what I thought were the lyrics, singing to people, could never find it until today. Brings back the bmx and Walkman memories.
Much agreed. Through The Eyes is still a great album that I listen to every now and then. It's unfortunate that they went off the radar and how Chris Volz has turned out to be kind of a douche.
@@GregKhar-NU-Metalhead2000 that's absolutely insane to even consider. She hates me is a Nirvana rip-off, between rate me and dumb. Most of their CD that debuted was nothing but a Nirvana and days of a new ripoff Kid Rock, I can't think of one song that's even close to nu metal. I am the bull-god is a general rap rock song, where the guitar work is pretty much 90s alternative. There's nothing metal about it.. ba wt da ba it's nothing but an EFG scale. At the time I guess you could consider it more of an ac-dc except more modern. Nothing was nu-metal about devil without a cause, or cowboy, or anything on that record. The first step to any new metal song is dropping D and then potentially dropping a whole step below that . So it's very very hard for me to have any kind of understanding that those two bands were nu-metal. I'd call them corporate rock whores more than anything
I hate coal chamber with a passion because I had mixed up love by coal chamber and I am loco by I'll nino and got very frustrated trying to find the latter
@@L.R.KNIGHT 'she hates me' is actually a rip off of suicidal tendencies classic 'I saw your mommy' but yeah those guys are ass whichever way you slice it
Going Under is such a bop!!!! Whisper and Tourniquet are definitely Evanescence's most nu-metal songs, but what I love is how Amy just does her own thing in terms of genre.
Last Linkin Park tour on Europe was incredible, I will never forget them, so glad that my mate recorded everything. So many great bands, awesome work. Godsmack has unbelievable songs, I love all Korn tracks. Thumbs up to you.
Something that I’ve always really love about korn is their rap-type bass. Fieldy has always been great with keeping dope rhythms. Korn didn’t really develop much groove in their drums until Follow the Leader.
Yea it's funny seeing White Pony on here. It was basically a giant middle finger and departure from the genre but instead of leaving they ended up inspiring more moody nu metal. It's kind of crazy how much they evolved over the years. You can listen to 7 words then Digital Bath then When Girls Telephone Boys then Rosemary etc and everything is so different sounding yet never feels out of place in a playlist.
Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, GnR, Dokken, and Def Leppard all tried to distance themselves from the "hair metal" label, but it stuck for a reason....Deftones is Nu Metal.
Korn and soad are in my opinion the best nu-metal bands they stick so much to their metal influences like Pantera and lots of other bands but give it such a unique spin
From my mid teens to early twenties. Late nineties nu metal really spoke to my high school anger and frustrations. When I got my first good job in 2001, and also had mellowed out A LOT, I met people there that started introducing me to a ton of new music, and by around 2002 I had completely checked out of this style of music. I don’t even recognize half of the songs after 2002 or so. Still this video brought back some awesome memories and had clips of songs I hadn’t heard or thought about in twenty years. 👍
Great List. To me Nu metal has roots in the late 80’s and early 90’s with Faith No More and various hardcore bands experimenting with new rock at the time, I believe Korn was the first band to popularize the style of rock that became nu metal, you chronicled the growth of nu metal incredibly accurately, the first nu metal band i heard was drowning pool and i loved them immediately, People love to gatekeep amd be elitist about it but at the end of the day I listen to music for me not for anyone else and everyone should as well, do it for yourself not for others people! Also thank you for including Lostprophets as they where easily one of the best bands of there time.
Some people don’t consider them nu metal. They often just get this generic “hard rock” label. I definitely don’t think they are as “nu metal” as Korn, but I would say Godsmack technically belongs in the nu metal genre. Just closer to the edge than the center.
I watched a video recently where Sully was interviewing the guitarist from Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt. It was kind of cool seeing two bands from the same city, but so different, having a great conversation with each other.
Godsmack is alternative metal. I know a lot of people consider them as nu due to the bands they used to tour with back in the day. The same goes for SOAD.
Good compilation. I was about 16 when I got into this kind of music, good times. Now I'm 37, and even though my taste has changed a bit over the years, I keep listening to these bands frequently.
I'm not 37, but I have been listening to Metal for a long time now, and I am an adult, and I think my tastes change somewhat, but mainly they just increase. Meaning I get into a wider range of things as time goes on while still being into a good amount of what I used to be.
Sepultura could never be considered Nu Metal. They go all the way back to the 80s. 3 Days Grace was part of that "post-hardcore" thing with Nickelback.
I was almost crying remebering my youth, then Trapt made me smile, didnt though it would be included in this video, is my hidden jewel from my 2000s teenager time along with Crossfade (that one you missed). This video is 100% feels tho, good work!
An honorable mention that I think all Nu-Metal fans should know of is a band called Ultraspank. The vocalist, Pete Murray is an absolute beast. Check out "5" "Crumble" and "Jackass" by Ultraspank for a quick taste. Some of the members of Ultraspank (Pete Murray included) went on to form Lo-Pro. Also a pretty good band. I like their song "Sunday" most. "Not Me" is another good Lo-Pro track to check out if you're unfamiliar.
Mi infancia esta en los 90's ... Asi que básicamente desde que recuerdo a la musica como tal, siempre ha estado oresente este genero en mi vida, junto con otros mas... Y no me ha abandonado oara nada ❤❤
My daughter calls this DAD ROCK. which is fitting considering she was born in 2005 and I lived through the nu-metal years (and by 2005 I reached the emo years but thats a different story)
I agree 100% dude. Most metal purists hate nu metal because of its hip hop influence, but hip hop was just coming off the back of 2pac and others which made the genre super aggressive. It wasn't the same as 80s hip hop. Mixed with metal guitars this new rap rock was fucking badass.
If you look at it now it was the worst thing that could happen to metal as metal was the shit back in the day until hip hop took over. Today it's all hip hop like it used to be metal . Hip hop in metal was actually other downfall if metal. Never recovered after that. Today the Rick stars are rappers...
@@user-bf6gz8ej4o That's just not true. Metal hot compared to jazz because of it's progressive nature. Just like jazz metal always evolves. Sure there is Polyphia but for a long Time now es diddnt have a good new fusion between metal and hip hop. It's just starting to come back now because his seem to be fed up with hip hop now as it's reaching bits peak .
Nu Metal was born even earlier than 1994, the year of his birth is 1989, and the parents were Sex Art, Jonathan Davis participated in this group, vocalist of the band Korn.
THANK YOU for including Incubus's Fungus Amongus & S.C.I.E.N.C.E. It's like everyone forgot their early shit. Still seems ppl forget early Hed(pe) though... 😉
This is what I thought exactly, like literally yesterday when I found this compilation. Then I turned on their first album and started reading about the band... and then... ooooof....
Correction: While White Pony did came out in 2000, the music video you are showing was from a EP that came out after White Pony in 2001. And that the album Start Something came out in 2004, while the music video was from a single that came before the album. And the same goes to The Fake Sound of Progress as it originally release in 2000.
Yeah the dates are abit off, I put that in the description lol, however; the fake sound of progress got re recorded and released for international markets in 2001!
