YES!!! I still come back to that game and it's story mode, plus all the individual events and party games. The only event I never really cared for was curling, simply because I sucked at it for no apparent reason. Curling Bowling on the other hand, was one of my favorites. And getting to go back in AFTER you beat the story mode for the first time and have NEW things to do? Plus just how awesome all the individual towns were? That game was truly special, and I still enjoy coming back to it.
DS version of Winter Olympics is probably the best in the series. -A full fledged single player campaign -Better Olympic events -Better Dream events -Amazing music -Better roster
While London Olympics 2012 on the Wii was the best of the consoles games -Memorable Dream events -More Regular events which are pretty cool -The ability to customize your Miis and that each outfit gives different stats (which that returned from Winter Olympics Wii but with the twist of getting scratch cards everytime you play events) -A somewhat good party mode with fun minigames outside of events. -The return of Rival battles (still sucks you can't play as any of em) -And overhaul the game is better than the Beijing olympics with a different charm.
To answer your question about what Skill characters specialize in, they make certain skill-based events or actions take less effort to execute. For example, in Trampoline they require less inputs and in Skeet and Archery, they have much larger crosshairs and accuracy, making it easier to shoot discs and arrows respectively.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is the best game in the series for me they added so many new dream events that were a lot more different from the base game and I remember the party mode being pretty good.
I can never be mad at these games. While a crossover platformer with good gameplay would be amazing, this is how I got into the Sonic series. I played the Beijing game at my cousins, my mom got us the Vancouver game, I played Secret Rings afterwards, and now it's one of my favorite series
I believe this is the only Mario & Sonic game with the Sonic 1 & 2 music. Sega doesn't own the rights, so even with them recycling Green Hill the location, they only use the theme on special occasions.
Honestly the London 2012 one is the best in the series. It brings the best memories for me as I used to play all the time from the ages of 6-10. It just has one of the best variety of sports and dream events and it has so much more to offer than the other games in my opinion.
This kinda makes me want to go back and try the game with a friend 🤔 I wonder if there's a cheap version on Switch.. Maybe with less fiddley controls than the wii 😄 Thanks for the memory trip!
Innit man. I still have that game ever since I got in 2018. I did first play it in 2014 or 15 tho I think and it became my favourite in the series. It just brings good memories. Not to mention that it introduced the UK's (my country's) most popular sport: football. It's so fun.
Waluigi/Wario main here. Skill/Technique is very broad but the gist is that those characters are better at more intricate stuff like timing, precision, aim, handling, rhythm, etc. For example, they have a much better crosshair in archery.
You should totally look at not only the 2010 Winter Olympics like you said, but also the 2012 London Olympics as well. Its after that the series went downhill, but I imagine you'll love these two!
We might never get a real crossover with these series because of these games, but I swear the quality of the models for the Sonic characters in the newer Olympic games are better than the mainline Sonic game models we've got now.
I was just glad that they were able to give us a Mario and a Sonic crossover at all. I love the Olympic series and hope for many more! And have hope that one day we get a platformer.
The fact they put Sega character in f-zero it's wild fun fact the cgi cutscenes was made by Marza animation so you know you will get that quality cutscenes there
I was thinking it would be like persona Q where you can have a team of 5 and as you progress you get more Mario and Sonic characters to join you. Each Mario and Sonic characters have special abilities from their games and you can even play as your Mii character since miitopia gave them super powers
I have more fond memories for the Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Wii Version as that took what the original had and enhanced it. Not to mention, I was visiting London during the Olympic Games. Every time I listen to the opening cinematic and watch it, seeing Mario & Sonic at the top of Elizabeth Tower, shaking hands, it always seems to make me well up.
the story mode in winter olympics ds deserves it won video its peak also the music in this series is surprisingly spectacular especially the winter olympics, its a clean mix of both epic orchestra and catchy synths
I remember first playing the London 2012 Wii version in 2013 and still today over 10 years, still is a game I love, it's a great party game first and foremost, but the crossover aspect is delightful, London Party is so much fun, the Dream Events are phenomenal, the game has so much content to unlock like the music and Mii Costumes, the Challenges list and the quality of the events and music, that I keep coming back at very least once a year nowadays, it's truly a masterpiece. I also loved the Vancouver 2010 Wii and DS versions, specially the former for the awesome Adventure Mode. I know Mario & Sonic post London, were lackluster and such, but I still hoped the series didn't end, because I know Sega could deliver a great Mario & Sonic Olympic Game if they put effort to it, but it seems now that a return is not gonna happen, since Paris 2024 is just 2 months away, and thats a shame. But hey, if they are done with the Olympics for real, can they make an RPG then next? The Adventure Mode is kinda like one, so there is potential to be had at the very least.
I do think the DS versions are worth talking about, as each version in a given pair has exclusive content, and even the events shared between versions tend to have their own quirks that distinguish them.
This game was a huge part of my childhood and how i got into gaming today. It all started with Sonic The Hedgehog. Even my best friend got into it because of Mario. My first crossover game i ever enjoyed playing was Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games back in 2010 when my Mom first rented it when she used to work for Blockbuster. Truly was a blast and what made me the creative mind that i am today. Same for my best friend. And we're like Mario and Sonic as real people. 😂
5 minutes in and you did the classic Mario RU-vidr thing of "retrospective of these games except the ones I don't want to count". I know you are not a Mario RU-vidr but you still nailed it. I swear most if not all of them do this and it always takes me out of the video. A shame because I was enjoying the video up to that point. EDIT: I finished it and to be fair it was just a review of the first game, not the full series. Still enjoyable.
Would’ve been cool for a full crossover but this spin-off was still fun for a while I remember I sometime have London 2012 and put it in and have a blast
London Games on the Wii is my personal favorite. More dream events & things to do like unlocking mii costumes and London party. I used to clock so many hours in. Winter Games DS is also great solely for the Story Mode!
Just your reminder that Sega and Sonic still exist, and have positive interactions with the fanbase and public exclusively because the parent company, Sammy, needs the good PR
No, Sega and Sonic still exist exclusively because of the strength of Sonic's character design and overall IP. As Arin Hanson once said: "There's a lot of mascots stuck in a limbo bacause of one failed title like Banjo-Kazooie, there's just something about Sonic's eyes that appeals to people."
I can't stay mad at the Olympic games tho, it was a neat idea and some dream events were cool. Specially Vancouver 2010 one, damn, they actually tried to make a plot in that one.
The best Dream Event is the Beach Volleyball Duet in Rio 2016. It's so competitive that my friends and I still play it to this date.! 🏅 So sad that the poor quality 2020 version killed the franchise. We could've been getting a Parisian game today. 😥
personally, i think it would be cool to see a crossover with mario & sonic made like the mario and luigi games on the gba (and bowsers inside story) i think a crossover like that would be best.
I actually looked into this game's files not too long ago, and found SIX unused dream events. There was gonna be a bigger emphasis on them that just never made the cut sadly. :(
OH, for anyone wondering, they're... Dream Canoe Dream Hammer Throw Dream Basketball Dream Football Dream Archery Dream Shooting There's also some unused olympic games too, such as Quadruple Sculls, Double Trap, and 800m.
I do indeed remember when the first game had come out as I was 19 years old the time in 2007 and I just didn't have any interest in the game. I think I really just had my sports fixed with Wii sports so I just didn't really care about Olympic video games. Maybe I should have given some of these games a chance but ultimately I did not. I do remember they're being an advertisement for the Vancouver Winter Olympics video game though but I don't remember seeing an ad for the Beijing summer Olympic ones except when somebody shared a video on MySpace
This game always made me so mad, it doesn’t feel like either Mario or Sonic it just feels like the threw the characters into the olympics and called it a day
1:14 this was also kinda a mistake as well because Sammy is the reason why the quality of Sonic games was all over the place from 2004-2017 now however though it seems they actually seem to care about Sonic now and consider the franchise as a way to make money so they are now restructuring and giving Sonic team more people and budget
I had the winter games on Wii for the Canadian Olympics The unlockable village was awesome I played apt of bobsledding snowboarding and the snowball fights
Winter Olympics on DS has gotta my favorite withour a doubt. Maybe I'll consider London on Wii for a close second, but Winter Olympics DS is my favorite purely for story mode.
DS version has a mission mode where the final mission is a rival battle like: Shadow VS Luigi Peach VS Amy Wario VS Knuckles Sonic VS Mario Waluigi VS ...Dr Eggman somehow instead of Bowser which is kinda strange (i'm pretty sure his rival was Eggman, but I could be misremembering it) the DS version also have events not present in the Wii version of the game like 10 meter platform which did return to the Tokyo version of the game under the game's retro mode Dream Long Jump Dream Shooting and Dream Basketball tho multiplayer in that version works much better if both own a copy of the game as the download mode is very limited in comparison - somehow Miis got left out in the Tokyo edition tho they weren't in the DS version either, but there it makes sense as the Nintendo DS doesn't have a Mii Maker
There is only one problem with this game it reuses voice clips from MP5, MP6 along with Wario, Waluigi, and Yoshis artwork, MP7, and MKDD, including artwork from DDR Mario Mix for Mario and Luigi and artwork from SM64 DS for Bowser, So yeah not too much
I remember renting London 2012 on the Wii from Redbox back in the day and loving it. I hadn’t played it until I recently bought it last year. It was honestly really disappointing. I don’t know why I loved it so much back then. Maybe because I like basically any game I played? I don’t know.
imo they perfected this franchise in the two following games; the first one was good on its own as long as you were fine with the Wii's motion controls, but Vancouver and London really stepped up the game. (Although I do feel a bit bad learning these games were made by the Jet Set Radio devs, as it kinda feels like these games were the reason for that series' hiatus) I found Tokyo a bit underwhelming and Rio a freaking disaster. Oh, and my Sochi copy just wouldn't load, ever. :L
Sorry, but Super Mario Bros Z > Olympics More than being the best series of Internet, we find out that it always is the best, cuz it doesnt need to be pay or being fresh...is just simple but amazing.
I think the Olympic Games can be put to rest now, the novelty has already worn off and I’d like to see a Mario & Sonic RPG, I know there would be a big audience for it if SMBZ is anything to go by and plus Sonic himself deserves a good RPG after whatever Chronicles was trying to be with its funny bad music that people like meme about.
I still want some sort of platformer for a sonic and mario crossover, idk how they'll do it but they could do it more better now since hardware has improve so the possibilities are endless (no pun intended) they can have a sandbox thing and maybe the world could be a mix of both dimensions in a corrupt sense.maybe they can add coop type experience. Idk i believe there is true potential now then before. And also the switch 2 better have good performance and not burb into a vrisp i swear to god
I like the Olympic Games and all... But SERIOUSLY. Two of the most popular gaming icons in the WORLD have yearly crossovers, and all they do with it is play sports? Its honestly a little infuriating, because there's so much potential in an actual PROPER Sonic and Mario crossover, but they never do anything with it. Its just a glorified Mario sports game instead. :(
This is the worst IMO as we could have an epic game using the 2 mascots who teams up and fights against the villains of their respective games and have an epic plot ,they chose to make it into a sports game which is good but come on we can have better than something that is better than the Olympic Games
