Currently binge watching your videos. I'm originally from the US but now just outside of Greytown, and slowly renovating our old house. I grew up in a family of carpenters and builders, so I have mad appreciation for your focus on quality and detail. Your explanations of how things are done here has been massive helpful to understand what's possible and why. Great work. You and your team are what makes me love this trade.

Every job is like this in my 300 yr old house, everything needs packing, nothing is the same size, height or material. I have one door jam which is made of elm, oak and pitch pine. I love how the bitmag and the holiday featured equally

I have a 100 year old victorian in the western US and the framing around the windows, I discovered, was solid walnut.

Here in the UK we have a very limited palette of trees, until recently, compared with North America. Walnut is maybe for furniture but more likely for food.

Also respect your professionalism. I am Irish and we “ not me but most builders” would say fuck it won't see it from my house and do a quick job. I like to do things the right way even if they take longer and will never be seen. PS. Would love to see a slightly longer video once in a while? I can only imagine how long they take to edit but you can do it Scotty. Goodluck from wexford!

It's because the majority of builders/tackers in the UK/Ireland are on a price including myself and prices ain't exactly good at the moment so you gotta get thing done quickly otherwise you won't earn money. I'm from the UK and there was a bunch of Irish on my site and my god they was rough as fuck majority of it got pulled but they paid for it before it did and obviously didn't come back.

actually surprised to see the sarking left, its the first thing most insurers ask now, 'does you house have intact sarking or scrim'. Also, they put the gib on afterwards, that was a standard way of renovating villas, gib board straight over the wallpaper, scrim and sarking - the bead was just to hide the fact they'd done it as a lot of the time the tops of the skirting is around or slightly less than 10mm.

Put the ufb fiber in the linen cupboard with a new power outlet. Great space for hiding it. It's usually central in the building and the extra outlet can charge things out of sight.

Insulating a wall with a door in it is pretty much a waste of time - so much more sound is transmitted thru the gap under the door than passes thru a boarded wall it means insulating has a negligible effect. Building Regs in the UK don't require it in that situation for that reason... perhaps NZ does.. You did a lovely job of it anyway.. ;o)
@jgroenveld1268
@jgroenveld1268 3 года назад
Issue is - unlike you lucky folks with central heating in the UK - we would use portable heaters in each room so we would heat a room vs an entire house.
@adammacer
@adammacer 3 года назад
@@jgroenveld1268 Not sure what that has to do with sound insulation.. also, to respond to the implicit judgement in your comment, the vast majority of houses in the UK are built of masonry. This has high thermal mass, compared to wood, meaning that it takes a long time to warm up, meaning that you could carry your portable heater from room to room but it wouldn't make much difference until the next morning. I distinctly remember returning home from holidays to a cold house as a kid and it taking a few days to feel cosy in there again - they were particularly thick walls I should add. Insulated timber-framed walls on the other hand, respond quickly to heat input and portable, or zoned, heating makes sense

Is there any spesific reason you put the plasterboard horisontal instead of vertical? Is it because of the lenght of it, or is it what you prefer?
@johnmudge3148
@johnmudge3148 3 года назад
I work in the restoration business in the US and we always install our drywall horizontal as that is how it is installed in most of the houses. The main advantage is having fewer seams be shown in the final product.

Great (and exciting) video as always! I have the same dewalt table saw, love it. Curious if you ever rely on the built in fence scale measuring pointer thing to make your cuts vs measuring from the fence to blade manually like you do in the video? I totally trust the pointer on the fence scale and never measure manually anymore. Really enjoy the videos, they are very well made and I’ve learned lots of good tips. All the best.
