Was the Eurail train global pass worth it? It can be kind of expensive, but was it worth it? The Eurail pass also has seat reservation fees that can make it not such a good deal. Taking trains all around Europe is amazing, and the Eurail pass is a good way to do it, but is it worth it?

After following your journey, I started to map out the train costs for my July journey through Europe. Since we will decide in advance where we will be each day, I found that buying tickets in advance provides a greater savings than the Eurail Pass. Gone are the days when this train pass was a cheap travel option. Thanks for running the numbers.

I think that this pass is worth the money if you are travelling for a long period of time, but if you are travelling for a short period of time, it’s typically cheaper to just book the tickets from the train operator themselves.

Started using Eurail on the 70’s. A lot has changed, however I feel it is worth it for the ease of travel, especially if you are able to change your itinerary on a whim. With a 1st class pass you have the option to sit in 1st or 2nd class. I usually travel to major cities during the week and hop on local trains to visit surrounding areas. This allows opportunities to easily get out of town and experience locations that are not overwhelmed with tourists. I do reserve seats on IC / High Speed trains such as Amsterdam to Frankfurt.

Whether its worth it really depends on your situation. Last year, during the annual sale, I got 2 first class 4 day Global passes for my wife and I so we could go on a trip to see Christmas Markets. My wife is Hungarian, so it would start after visiting her family. The initial plan was Budapest to Vienna to Prague to Berlin to Copenhagen. Since we were staying out of Italy/France/Spain, the reservation hell you were describing would have been mostly avoided (reservation are mandatory for Hamburg to Copenhagen). I get them anyways so we can pick facing seats (motion sickness). A week before we were scheduled to leave, Austria went on Covid lockdown and closed their Christmas markets. So, we scrubbed Austria and picked Dresden instead. They closed their Christmas markets the next day because of Covid. We decided to try Zurich since OBB had a direct train from Budapest to Zurich. I priced that one trip out at ~350e for the two of us, which was more than half of the price of the eurail tix. After Zurich, we were able to hop on/off a SBB CFF FFS train to Munich and on to another to Prague. No reservations needed or available. Prague to Berlin to Hamburg to Copenhagen went off without a hitch. The price differences for the late adjustments to our trip were significant and the sale-priced pass made it affordable and relatively easy. If you are absolutely certain of your plans in advance, direct tickets are usually cheaper, but the flexibility of the pass made our trip possible. Semper Gumby means Always Flexible! :D

Good video. As mentioned before I think in it depends on where and when you are traveling. In our last three week trip to Italy I contemplated buying a pass because we were traveling to six + cities. I crunched the numbers and was glad I didn't buy the pass. We traveled mainly second class but even had a suite from Milan to Florence for around 100e. Easily found cheap fares on line and at the station. Only had to take one later train on one leg. U gotta love the European train system. Kep on traveling.

Hai Lisa and Josh. Your euro trip videos really helped me, cause we were on vacation on August. So we kinda behind you for a couple of months. We also bought the eurail after watching your video about it. I agree with you that it’s hard to book a seat reservation even with good cellphone connection. We live in the Netherland, so the phone connection was okay, as our sim card can work in all EU. Still, we had to go to some stations. And somehow the system (even the guy at the station) always put me and my toddlers in silence train. 😢 Luckily our trains weren’t full so we always managed to get other seats. But still, it would be better if we already get seats in family zone without the hassle. Also another thing we figured out during the euro trip, seat reservation is based on the train. So Thalys (France) and Trenitalia (Italy) were so expensive. DB (Germany) and OBB (Austria) were more affordable. So we tried to avoid the expensive trains. During our trip from Venice to Vienna, we almost used Trenitalia because we went to train station. We finally managed to book seats in OBB that’s cheaper. We skipped Paris cause the cost of train from Netherlands to Paris is almost similar with the seat reservation of eurail. Eurail is tricky. But in my case it worked cause we skipped Paris and Switzerland, the expensive trains. We only visited Italy, Germany, and Austria.
@LisaAndJosh
@LisaAndJosh 2 года назад
Those are great points! We found the same to be true about seat reservation fees varying between countries. The Eurail Pass is definitely tricky, we agree. We found that in some ways, it was convenient and had its benefits,, but when actually traveling, it definitely had its downfalls and was not always the most convenient. Hope you had a great vacation!

I mostly depends on where you go and how much train travel you want to do. It is well known France is usually not worth it because all the reservations but there are a lot of European countries where it is definitely worthwhile if you book a flex pass and want to do some city hoping and day trips.

We found it to be generally much more expensive than both flying or booking individual ticket - the Interrail pass seemed like a great deal, but we can't get that of course. QUESTION: We're doing a 15 day trip to London, Paris, Amsterdam (fly home from Amsterdam). Does the Eurail Global Pass cover all the trains? For example, when we are sightseeing in London, we plan to take the inner city subway (metro?) to travel around London. Does the Global Pass cover these trains as well? Or is it just for the high-speed trains that travel between countries? Thanks in advance! :-)

hey Mitch! thanks for watching :) great question--the answer is yes/no. For some countries, the pass allows you access to some of their metro systems or other modes of transportation. For every country we'd go to, we'd look at the Eurail Pass Benefits and see if there were any additional benefits or discounts for transport/accommodations. For Switzerland, for example, we were able to ride the ferry in Lake Thun and Glacier Express. www.eurail.com/en/deals/eurail-pass-benefits/benefits-switzerland This is the one for Great Britain: www.eurail.com/en/deals/eurail-pass-benefits/benefits-great-britain Hope that helps! I disagree with your conclusion. However I did not like traveling in France nor Spain by train. Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland were really nice. I found that the first class tickets didn't make much difference in some countries, in Germany and Italy it really made a difference. You can still ride the same route as the Glacier Express without seat reservation, the trains just stop more. What works for the Eurail pass versus other travel is the flexibility. If you purchase tickets for a train in advance, it is for THAT specific train and time. If you get to say Amsterdam and think I want to stay longer, then you must buy another ticket or get on that train and leave. I went to ride the trains and explore. No set itinerary. The Eurail pass is not for all travelers. If you plan to explore, this is the way to go. I did pay some other fees to ride a high speed train and to ride and sleep on a couple of night trains. But since I was just bouncing around, having the flexibility was nice. Plus most of the public transportation in Germany, buses and street cars are included with your pass.
@Ven100
@Ven100 2 года назад
Two questions as I'm thinking of purchasing a Eurail pass. First, did you by the 1st class or 2nd class? Also, about your public transportation in Germany (buses/street cars). I thought the pass is only valid on certain days of travel. For instance I'm looking at the 10 travel days over 2 months pass and I'll be in Munich for Oktoberfest for 4 nights. During that time, if I want to take one of the local buses, or trains, would that eat into my 10 day? Is it something they even scan? Or do they just look at it?
@gregwarren4791
@gregwarren4791 2 года назад
@@Ven100 I bought the first class ticket because I caught them on sale. In most countries it didn't seem to make much of a difference, but in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands it made a big difference. As far as the local transportation in Germany, you can ride the S-Bahn in the larger cities for free. It doesn't count for your days as far as I know. For me they just looked at it and motioned me on.
@brokenbones96
@brokenbones96 2 года назад
Do you HAVE to make reservations to take the free slow trains? Or are these trains so crowded that you have to make a reservation? Can the pass also be used for local trains within a city such as Munich? Did you have any issues where the pass didn't cover the train at all?
@LisaAndJosh
@LisaAndJosh 2 года назад
ha - sometimes. the app tells you (sometimes inaccurately) which trains require seat reservations. it's basically any train you'd want to take that requires one. the pass can be used for some local trains, but it's buried deep in their website - the per-country benefits page. it's not so much about not covering the individual train - the pass is good for most, but the seat reservations vary WIDELY in price from train to train, or route to route, so you have to be careful there. basically, seat reservations ruined the experience for us.
@MrPhobart
@MrPhobart Год назад
We got first class passes half price in the 50 years of eurail sale and with the reservation fees it was still an expensive 3 weeks but also one of the best holidays ever. The glacier express was a highlight. Also the app behaved ok for us but we couldn't reserve seats through it so we booked almost everything on the website. Syncing the bookings with the app was painful and the whole process needs clearer instructions.

@@farmerhavingfun yes, we are a bunch of old farts reminiscing about the past! We used to make fun of our grandparents for things like this! Before I went to Europe on my first trip I barely knew where any of the countries were on the map. We never traveled much as kids so we had almost no experience. Anyway, we also did the trip on the cheap and we would sometimes take the night train to avoid spending money on a hotel. I was with my brother so together we split the cost of a cheap 1 star hotel instead of hostels. We would buy tuna and a baguette and make sandwiches on the train. The point is that we reveled in the sights and the experiences - the luxury meant nothing. And it still doesn't mean a thing. But staying on topic (so Lisa and Josh would be happy!) we had the Eurail pass and at that time it was an amazing bargain. I think the second person's ticket was 50% off if we traveled together.

@@bradhorwitz2214 You have no idea how happy reading this thread makes us :)) Admittedly, we spend A LOT of time talking about what it would be like to not have all the technology, Google maps, social media and we sometimes/oftentimes crave it, but have a hard time putting it all away. In a lot of ways, social media has made travel more accessible, but also less magical, maybe? Thank you both for sharing your stories--we LOVE it!

Bought a 7 day Global pass for my 15 year old daughter and myself in April6-21st 2022. We want to go from 1. London > Paris(stay 4 nights) > venice > Rome(stay 4 nights) > Seville, Spain(bus tour to Grenada) > train to Madrid.. The Global Pass total was $612(had a discount promo) but those seat reservations are going to kill us. Thinking of not even going to Spain because of the cost, but also don't want to waste the train days.. so maybe I will just get a refund and get only a 5 day pass. Not sure what to do after Rome.

yeah the seat reservations really turn it from a "wow we can go anywhere pass!" to a "we really can't go anywhere pass" very quickly

@@LisaAndJosh agree. I'm going this summer and got the 1 month pass because it was on sale for 250€ which was cheaper than the 15 days pass. Spent £130 on my reservations. Many of the trains needed reservations which was a pain, and then the one train I wanted a reservation for was sold out. The worst offender by far though for me is eurostar. Of course living in Britain I've got to take the Eurostar to get out and back in, and it's €30 per reservation. It sucks. Nothing like when my dad did it in the 80s they just got on any train they wanted pretty much. He said on his first trip he didn't get any reservations. Although in fairness his first trip was mostly through Yugoslavia, down the length of the east of the Adriatic

Hi Lisa and Josh!.. I don´t know where i´m making mistakes.. But here, just for 2 + adults + 2 childreens for example.. Paris-Lodon-Paris, buying ticket in advance (2 weeks) cost 650 Euros (Eurostar site)!!! I was searching every video on RU-vid to unravel about Eurail Pass. My trip will be Jan2024, and i´m my plan is: Paris-London / London-Paris / Paris-Zermatt / Zermatt-Paris We are in 4 adults + 2 Chd.. and Global Pass cost 1.068 Dollars. (4 day within 1 month) For me its a huge advantage to Euro Global Pass. right?

I know that rail passes are extremely popular, but they are definitely not cheap, especially if you are on a budget .I will reveal tips and tricks to you. From my experience, traveling by train is significantly cheaper if you don't take Rail passes. If you take a Rail pass for it, it will cost you a lot of money, several hundred euros for each Rail pass, and you must also buy and pay extra for each reservation for every train marked IC, EC, NC, NJ and similar. The only advantage of the rail pass is mobility. Since I plan my trips several months in advance, I prefer to give up that mobility and save money, I take individual fixed train tickets for seat second class with reservation for each train, which are much cheaper. Of course you have to buy them several months (3 or 4 for my exprience) in advance, because as the date approaches, the occupancy of the train increases and the price of the ticket increases. Another little trick is to plan travel on weekdays from Monday to Thursday, because tickets for train those days are often much cheaper than on Friday and weekends When added up, you will save a minimum of 100 euros probably even more. This is significant if you are on a budget.

Whoah...it sounds like Euro pass is pain in the butt !!? Lol. Some other vlogers said it was totally worthy ,though !! I think it really depends on the person's itineraries & destinations & flexibility...if you really wanna go to many places as much as you can everyday & totally & not to worry of missing your trains & being flexible about it ,I think it's fabulous !! But...what was about the app .? I thought you just have to show your pass !? I am not a computer savvy person ,so I don't wanna rely on computer or my phone all the time !! I'd rather do it in the old fashion ways ,too !! Like you said ,bringing the stubbs from the tickets as souvenirs & tokens would be wonderful !! Thank you for r this video !! I am gonna watch it ,again !! Lol.👍😅💜🥁🐉🎤💞

Yeah I would really honestly like to see the return to the paper pass, even though I'm sure it got annoying for Eurail to have to keep replacing them, it was even more annoying to have the app not work when you got on the train as a customer. The trains used to be such a freeing experience, go anywhere, anytime - but with the app, and the seat reservations... it's lost a bit of it's magic.

@@LisaAndJosh Well said !! 👍👍I totally understand that frustration, especially I am not high tech/ computer savvy at all !! I hate typing ,texting all the time on my phone ,or using apps ,imagine me dealing with that kind of situation ...!! Lol. I'll be furious & crying in Europe !! They'll have to come up w/ a solution !! That's my nightmare ...I often imagine what if q codes & baroness won't work to shop my groceries in U.K.,or Europe & train tickets ,or worse my plane boarding pass !!? 😫 We really don't need that kind of hassles !! On top of that ,Euro railcard seems like it really works well on certain people w/ certain plans/ itineraries !! Some praise ,some put it down !! Lol 😅Confusing !! I think if you don't have a particular plan & want to travel as many as countries in Europe, or you go to so ~many many of 'em, then it makes the best of it & works very well !? I didn't know of apps needed to be shown to prove that you have one !! Lol. 😅💜💜💜🥁🐉🎤💞

Your video would be very useful for those contemplating purchasing a Eurail pass. Most would be customers do not know about the issues of reservations on high speed rail, and the hassle of going to the station to personally book these. I am a regular in the TripAdvisor Train travel forum, and I always ask people to reconsider and to do their maths first, before going blind and purchasing in the hope of saving money. They don't!

I think if you're a non EU citizen the Eurail is not worth it. But I did some research and if you're an EU citizen or resident. You can get the Interail which for example if you buy 2 months pass you can use as many trains as you want to. Which in the end if you're going back and forth I believe is worth it.

Pretty unfortunate how it turned out for you. For us, we saved like ~620 euros with our interrail pass compared to booking each train seperately and even gained additional seats in the Deutsche Bahn trains, which do not require reservations. Our journey was cheaper, even compared to driving (if you include vignettes and petrol prices) which is why we decided on it Tho i do also advice anyone going on such a train journey: do the maths, you don't wanna pay more than you need to

My flix bus from rome to florence was 13 euro, same from florence to venice, except it was 5 euro! Most busses were under the price of a seat reservation fee and took similar durations. The Trains are overpriced. My fliggts cost less than the divided europass equivalent. The trains are lovely, but over priced. They should be government subsidised to cut costs in half, to save emissions and reward users for taking longer trips than planes. 10h train rides are 90 min flights and cost the same... It’s dumb.

I can't even figure out if it's worth it since it's so utterly confusing! Trains in Europe are meant to be used by the locals, they are not intuitive for tourists or first time users. It's the most disorganized thing I've ever seen. Makes the utter mess of AMTRAK look like a first world train system in comparison, at least their website is clear and to the point. So many opportunities to make mistakes with this thing that would take the fun factor away and introduce lots of stress. Cheaper and easier to ride a motorcycle, a car, or even a bicycle throughout Europe.

for fast (hi speed) trains, it is always cheaper to pre-book. For regular trains in Germany, there are day passes which are quite cheap. For Italy, regionale trains are always cheap (does take a bit longer). There is no one size fits all. $1,184 is just stupid. And it's not even a paper ticket anymore?? Oh forget these dumb apps. We did a similar thing 10 days 5 +1 countries for $530 some dollars each in 2004 and got hit with those reservation fees too which made us feel scammed. Then we had one last day while in Paris and they wouldn't let us use it to Versailles but when we learned we could use it they (SNCF?) wouldn't refund the extra ticket we bought. Had real attitude about it. Did it again in 2012, then it was about $620 some dollars but 1184 is insane. The greed levied on travelers by the European rail system just isn't worth it. It's not what it was in the 90s unfortunately with cancelled routes, like the beautiful afternoon, sunset along the riviera PIsa to Barcelona I once took. Just better to easyjet or Ryan air it. If the rail services in Europe want to kill themselves, let them but taking advantage of travelers isn't cool.

Yeah, it does feel super far off from where it used to be. This my 3rd Eurail pass, and probably my last. The trains were packed, but also usually not on time. It took ~12 hours for our longest day from Prague to Paris, with 4 different changes, and a flight would have taken about 2 hours. Just doesn't make a ton of sense anymore.
