The Fuji X100v has been out for years at this point, but it's had a huge resurgence this year due to social media. This caused the prices to inflate to a ridiculous amount for a point and shoot camera, so I began scouring the internet for an affordable alternate option. Today we're deep diving into the original Fujifilm X100 to see if it's still got the juice.

This is my favorite camera. I use an X-T4 for events, and before that I had an X-H1. Both are wonderful, sharply designed cameras that produce stunning, vivid images. Neither, however, can replicate the film-like shooting process that the X100 can. That's what I bought it for. Something small and simple to slow me down, that could bridge the gap between digital and film when I couldn't financially justify shooting the latter anymore. After running with it as my only camera when I attended college out of state, the shooting process became very natural. Every time I take it out to shoot, even today, my brain enters a different mode which makes me more forgiving of its shortcomings, and attentive to the world around me. It doesn't look like film, the "film simulations" are ass butt doo doo terrible, but it feels kinda like film. I do want to clarify, this is not the experience of using a manual film SLR, but rather like using a high end film point and shoot that happens to have manual controls when you happen to want or need them. It's never going to give you the look of your primary camera, but it has its own distinct look and that's the whole draw. I love it for concert photography at smaller shows. Security has never given me shit about it, and you can really get up close with it in a confined space. The feel of the camera is joy in your hand. You can go from aperture priority, to shutter priority, from auto, to manual all very naturally and "mechanically," and that joyful experience is bolstered with the assistance of a tactile and useful exposure compensation knob. Manual when you need it, Auto with customization when you don't wanna think too hard. All that stuff obviously exists in most cameras today, but that tactile experience I get from the X100 makes me more likely to stop thinking about my gear, and actually pay attention. The camera becomes an extension of my brain. Also, RAW support in a camera this old is valuable, to the point where I don't really shoot jpegs with this. As I mentioned prior, the film sims are bad, at least for getting a "film" look, and RAW gives you an emergency defense to fix any botched metering. There's much more room to fix misfires than you might think. I once accidentally shot an entire concert 3 entire stops under and when I pulled them into lightroom, I salvaged some remarkable, unique images that resembled Ilford 3200 film in black and white with a gritty, dissonant energy. Those images were eventually used on the artist's social media. I would LOVE the images from the X100v, I'm sure, but I'm not quite sure I'd love using it in the way I use my X100. The ease of use and image detail would leave it occupying a space much more similar to one of my big cameras and at that point, it's only main draw to me would be its size. The X100v makes beautiful images, but the camera that makes me *want* to make beautiful images is its great-great-grandparent. Now that I'm primarily shooting film again, this is the one digital camera I regularly use outside of work. That said, I agree with your "don't buy it for over $300" take Fuji made several perfectly usable old point and shoots with a similar look, and if you really wanna spend $600 on a camera a decade out of date, I am practically begging you to just get an X-Pro 1 at that point. Sorry for the ridiculously long youtube comment, I just wanted to share my experience with this camera.

Try the Panasonic LX100, the OG. Only problem - JPGs are not great. Lower the noise reductin to the minimum, gets a little better. But the RAWs are top notch. And the camera is smaller, more versatile (fast zoom lens - is a very good and cheap fast zoom that comes with a camera for free), even records good 4k. And kicked the ass of my X100s when I had both, specially (surprise) in low light.

Can second the hell out of this, my lx100 has been a WORKHORSE of a little beast. the RAWs come out so crispy. Love the thing

nice cams for sure, but even with the x100f the AF is frustrating, same thing with rx1, rx1r..

Once again- I don't know a gyatdang thing about cameras but I learned some cool things. You're editing skills are UNMATCHED and you make some of the most engaging content on RU-vid AND THAT'S A FACT!

I'm still shooting with my Canon 70D and the photos are fantastic. The best part is that lenses are cheap. Although it can only shoot 1080p in video, if I need a higher resolution, I can always upscale the video to 4K by software. The AI software does a great job and I managed to get it affordably. The still photos are fantastic and it's just an all round fun camera to shoot with. Now I do have a GoPro Hero 10 and as long as it doesn't overheat, it does a good job with 4K. I have no desire to shoot any hire resolution than that. It just takes up way too much space on my hard-drives. In the end, it's about you taking your time and thinking about lighting, focus, composition, and most importantly, having fun doing it.

Great cameras, auto focus isn't amazing in low light and a bit slow in general but once you're over that, it does everything all the other 100s do. Lovely IQ and descrete. Does amazing sunrise and sunset shots, lots of my favourite shots came from mine.

I'd go with Canon m6ii with 22 pancake. Smaller, lighter, better AF, IQ, ergo under $700.

I’m good with my X-S20 (& cheap pancake lens) with the better autofocus and more film simulations …. At least until the next X100 comes out….😂

I’ve got the X100 and have bought an old one my cousin had, for £100 It’s great. Idk if I’m high but there is a flash on it but how the fuck do I turn it on. I bought an external flash and works great but I realise there is one on there right? lol
