Last year I planted a nectarine tree and my husband planted an apricot tree. We got a handful of fruit from each tree last year. This year the nectarine tree is about 12-14 feet tall and the apricot tree is about 6 feet tall! Both trees are full of fruit we can wait to pick them later when the fruit is ripe!

Glad your gardens in and well on its way to being very fruitful for you! I'm really late this year in getting mine going! I do have potatoes, onions and garlic doing well but other than that different berries, not much else! We've had quite a bit of rain here on our PNW island and I've spent most of my time cleaning out flower and other areas of the property that had become over run with the invasive blackberry vines, weeds and grasses😝 A couple of years of neglect and chaos reigns😂 I may have to live vicariously through your gardens this year! Stay strong and take care🇺🇸😎🇨🇦

I have Bears(Beers) Black fig trees. I would be happy to send you some cuttings whenever you want. I have saved cuttings for the last two winters and now have about 6 or 7 fig trees from my first one I bought at Lowe's.

@@HerHomesteadSkills I'll do some checking to be sure when taking cuttings is safe. Right now they are fruiting so I'm not sure if I have to wait for fall/winter. UPDATE: Here's what I've found. While some damaged branches can be pruned this time of year, it is best to prune them in the late fall/winter while the plant is dormant. I'm sorry I can't send them now, but I will definitely still send them late this year if you are still interested. God Bless!

Hi Toni! I'm a follower from Kansas City and I love watching your videos. I'm learning so much and I take a lot of comfort listening to your calm presentation. I'm not sure what zone you're in, but I'm in US Zone 6 and I want to try planting a fig tree too. As a child, I remember that my grandpa always loved figs. Chicago Hardy looks to be ok up to Zone 5 here. Thank you for sharing your skills and views with us. You are much appreciated. Michelle
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Месяц назад
Thank You, I'm in zone 5 here...at least what used to be considered zone 5, and even Chicago Hardy will not overwinter in the ground here. Most keep them in pots and bring them into a sheltered area overwinter.

I have 2 Chicago Hardy figs. I pull them into the garage and cover them for dormancy. I would like to get them into the ground through. My winter is nothing compared to yours, I’m in the Washington DC area.
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Месяц назад
If your figs are healthy and large, I recommend taking a cutting (figs root easily) and when rooted plant it in the ground, and see how well it survives over the winter, and if it does well then you would be safe to put your large plants in the ground...even Chicago Hardy don't overwinter in the ground here!

Toni, perhaps you are familiar with Wiffletree Farm and Nursery in Elora, Ontario. If not, you can request a catalog because they have such an amazing selection of fruiting trees and plants for every need. Very good for ideas and setting the creative juices flowing. The area I presently have for growing is very shaded so it involves doing a lot of experimenting to find out what will grow successfully. Would love to move but as you know when you have adult children a lot of decisions also revolve around them. A parents love :) Take care and yes, chill for a bit :)

It is funny that you mention fig trees. I was so excited to find a fig tree from TSC and it is a cold hardy variety. I bought one and brought it home and opened it and it was this little bity one inch thing. I was like...oh man, this is not going to grow. I planted it anyway and started watering it and treating it just as any other potted plant. I mulched around it with grass clippings, just as I do all my plants. I would check on it periodically and talk to it some too. Still all I has was just the little twig just sitting there until about a week ago. It started to grow this really tiny green sprout from the little twig. I can't believe it really. I only paid about 7 dollars for it. I am going to keep it in a pot until next year I think and then plant it in the yard. It is supposed to be cold hardy, so it should grow here in Indiana. It is called a Chicago Hardy Fig.
