MacArthur was ordered to leave, which makes sense because he'd have info that would be bad for the enemy to get. That said General Wainwright who was the general that stayed and surrendered to the Japanese. He managed to last to the end of the war in a POW camp, they awarded him the medal of Honor. Then despite his experience he went back to the army and served to 64 which was the forced retirement age.

General MacArthur had the chance to ignore his orders or try to organize a chance to rescue at least some of his troops. Instead, he merely said, "I will return!" and left his men behind like Napoleon did in Egypt. The man should not be applauded but scorned.

@@ForgottenHonor0 not saying he did something brave there, which he himself would admit. My opinion of him is basically a slightly above average general that let vanity distract him. And don't even get started on the whole nuke Korea situation.

@@ForgottenHonor0 Without MacArthur, it's likely the Philippines would've never been liberated until the end of the war. He was a dumbass in many cases but leaving was not one of them. He's lucky he made it out at all. Being captured or killed on Bataan would've served zero purpose. I will not applaud him but neither will I scorn him.

@@ForgottenHonor0yeah war ain't as simple as thay I'm grunt and I know that to be true. It was already bad enough that General Wainright was captured but it would ha e been worse had MacArthur had been captured as well. I'm not a fan of him but I understand and respect the decision its the same type of thinking Admiral Fletcher made when he abandoned Yorktown you can't continue to fight from there so time to go because as a flag officer your job isn't about the caring for troops anymore its about the bigger mission. The caring for troops on the officer level in the Navy comes from ship captains and in the Army brigade or division commanders. MacArthurs role in this was theatre Commander so it made sense I personally as grunt would want him to leave because atleast from my angle i have one less strategic asset that we need to devote people to protect.

As with a lot of the guys TFE has profiled, I'm surprised there hasn't been a movie made about this guy.

Most of his stories are so hard to believe that they can't be fiction. You couldn't sell it as a movie because no one would believe this could actually happen.

My favorite acting like you belong is a story of a guy who worked for a “infiltration” organization that works with businesses to test their security, and he basically got all the way into their maximum security area just because he was wearing an AT&T branded shirt and carried a step ladder with an iPad in a shoulder bag

If you want to know what japanese were capable of look up Unit 731. biological and chemical warfare research unit stationed in Manchuko , nowadays China. Oh and yes.. the senior officers of this Unit were pardoned by the USafter the war in exchange for the research data.
@GeekDefenseInitiative8006
@GeekDefenseInitiative8006 10 месяцев назад
yup the Unit 731 claimed that they had made groundbreaking medical discoveries only after they found out that did the US found out that everything that was in those files had been uncovered by western doctors decades earlier through normal means

One of the few times reneging on a deal would've been absolutely justified. At least we got something _useful_ out of Operation Paperclip. Nothing gained from Unit 731 was worth permitting their freedom
@Duskraven67
@Duskraven67 10 месяцев назад
@Mare_Man not necessarily. Want to know how we understand what happens to you and how to treat everything from hypothermia to syphilis? Thank 731. Unfortunately history is not black and white. It is messy. You have to take the good with the bad. Were 731 pure evil? Yes. Have we saved countless lives with their research? Also yes.

@@Mare_Mansadly, we actually did get a lot out of the 731 guys. Much of our knowledge about disease progression came from their research. We learned in horrifying detail about the effects of countless chemicals and diseases and significantly helped research into screening for and curing them.

1911 was created to fight them the normal service pistol would not stop them due to the drugs they used. Tfe has a video in the 1911.

As for the comment about the savagery of the Japanese during WWII, they did not have fear for much, but the marines. They had horror stories about the marines and how they “were pulled from insane asylums and high security prisons.”

I'm old enough to remember the pair of AH-1W cobras in my backyard doing CAP. 16 hellfires and 2 sidewinders each is rather intimidating. They reminded me of a pissed off pointer spaniel. I also remember going to the front yard and seeing the plume of smoke and dust from the towers. I live in NJ so........ It was also the first and only time I can remember when we stopped fucking with the new yawkers - think of it like the Corps not screwing with the Air Force or Navy.

Not to be a pest, but the 82nd ABN DIV is known as the All American Division. The “Devils in Baggy Pants” originated during the Sicily campaign. The 504th Regiment of the 82nd gave such grief to the Germans during the battle. Afterwards, a German officers diary was found, where he wrote “American paratroopers, devils in baggy pants” were 100meters from his outpost lines. I was proud to have served in the 82nd, as a Devil in Baggy Pants. Strike Hold!!! (Our Motto found on our unit crest)

Dude! You watched The Colony! I LOVED that show! I have both seasons at home. The survivor you're talking about is Adam Ticknor, aka Tick. He was a US Marine. I thought he was cool the way he had been surviving in the shadows the whole time. Also that part about season 3 being canceled because a cast member died is a myth. They had problems casting the third season and Thom Beers Productions stopped casting calls but retained the rights to the show so nobody else can pick it up. Damn shame. I would have watched the hell out of it. In fact, now I will!

The 1911 was made (alegedly)because the tenacity of the charging Moros who tied their upper body with rope and body binding making rudimentary body armor was no match for the M1892 .38 double action pistols that the American army used and had to request the older M1873 single action that uses .45 colt cartridges. Thus the myth that only a .45 can stop a charging Moro 'Jurementado' as they were called before.

Yeah, I was just at the end of middle school when 9/11 happened, and if I didn't know it was far older than that, I would have assumed that the term "shit show" was coined during that whole thing, because every channel was just complete shit. I read a lot of books during that time frame, because there wasn't a lot else going on.
