Omar Bradley's reaction is a perfect example of why our military became the best: willing to take creative ideas that work, even if they look stupid.

So what you're saying is that we have quite the dearth of Omar Bradley's nowadays in both the Army specifically and the military of America in general now days. Makes sadly too much sense.

@@VunderGuy Yeah. Unfortunately (also fortunately, because war is terrible) we haven't been in a large-scale battlefield and in enough trouble to have to incorporate new ideas, so we haven't. Like Fat Electrician says, I'm not saying it's right, just saying it happened.

I used to live in the same apartment building as Omar Bradley’s secretary. We used to talk about him. He was my favorite general that I ever heard about. He was a thinking man as well as a leader. He was also a good man. This was what I had taken just from what I read. After talking with this charming lady, I was sure of it.

One of the main reasons the Germans get credit for the Blitzkrieg is that they were the first to visibly use it to great effect in the field. So it's not so much a case of making the Germans out to be scarier and more competent than they were, it's just that they actually put it into practice and refine it. This is because, while the British Army was mired in entrenched cliques and ultra-conservative viewpoints about war and how it should be conducted, Germany was very much not at the time. Hitler was an experienced former enlisted soldier who loathed the old German Imperial Officer Corps' rigidity and stubborn refusal to embrace new ways of fighting, and blamed Germany's loss in the First World War at least partially on the blinkered stubbornness of the old hidebound Aristocratic officers. So Hitler embraced radical new ideas about warfare, and encouraged all kinds of experiments and projects to find newer, more effective battlefield tactics and strategies. He also embraced a number of rising stars in the military that a more conservative establishment like the British Army's would have stifled and suppressed, like Guderian and Donitz. Basically, after World War 1, the British military establishment decided that their point was made and that all was right in the world. They still innovated, but it was a more careful process hounded by internal politics from entrenched interests. Germany's military and political establishment, on the other hand, took their defeat as a clear sign that rapid and radical change was needed, and acted accordingly. They still had their own stupid cliques and internal political shenanigans, but it was less pervasive and stifling in the German military of the time.

History classes tend to hit the high points and focus on big-picture ramifications of events and people around them. It also matters who is writing the book, because they can emphasize different things. One book may have a chapter devoted to something where another has a short paragraph. It's not really surprising how much we either don't learn or completely forget at the age of 13, 14, 15, etc.
@m2hmghb
@m2hmghb 20 дней назад
@@aden538 I agree, but looking at it from a historical perspective there is no way that the invasion would have been as successful without his unit. The mines alone would have stalled everything significantly. I learned about his "funnies" from playing Close Combat back in the 90s.

The reason why there are so many historical reports of people who should know better purposely not doing so because of some personal standing is because that's the story of humanity People in Power don't like Change because Change may make them superfluous and the current situation is quite comfortable thank you That's why War and Other Crisis are accelerants for development in the short term, because they force need of change, meanwhile recovery there from then often is spent establishing the tools of power (political, economical, sociological etc.) which promotes "stability" because Change is risky and thus seen as dangerous Sociology and Anthropology are fun

First time I've heard mention of COPPist (Combined Operations Pilot Parties) outside of what I read and heard in books. An organisation which was an offshoot (one of many offshoots) from the original SBS founded by Roger Courtney from with the commando structure. Also blitzkrieg as we know it wasn't at all a new concept within the german army. It was started out with the Prussians look at that Gustavus Adolphus did during the 30 year war and implemented into their military strategy called bewegungskrieg, or just movement war. All Heinz Guderian really did was replaced the horses with tanks and give the infantry motor vehicles.

I love hearing these kinds of stories about these military Legends! Especially the obscure ones that no one talks about, but should talk about! It makes e happy knowing that The Fat Electrician is sharing these stories with us and giving these people the recognition they are due! He is THEE best teller of these stories! I believe we still use a modern version of the Sherman Crab tank nowadays. I think it's called a "Mine Flail" or something like that. I'm not sure, I'm not in the military. But, I remember watching something about it on the History Channel. I think it was on a Modern Marvels episode about tanks.

I knew of the funny tanks of World War II. I learned of them as an extra curricular project while I was still in secondary school here in Australia. We actually didn’t cover it in school, but thanks to this extra curricular project I did, I was able to learn quite a bit about, the flail tank, the spindle tank that put down roads, the flamethrower tank and the bridge tank. The duplex drive tank was pretty well known and had been covered in class, but none of the others.

Yes. The West was screaming it's head off that Russia had designs and capabilities to blitz through Ukraine and through Eastern Europe in 2022, not understanding that the Russian military of then and even today is a force designed primarily to protect Russia and not really project power outside its borders in the way subscribers of the Great Game do. The real lead buried under all that chaff tho including your very unsubtle dig at the Russian army is that the Russian army of 2022 and now, despite limited force projection, would still absolutely smoke any NATO formation of comparable size it ever came into contact with because NATO has lost its anti-fragility to being consistently bombed rather than being the sole ones doing the bombing and is thoroughly captured by the cult of light infantry and mobile warfare where mobile warfare cannot be applied. In short, NATO isn't geared towards the new firepower attritional meta that conventional warfare between two peer peoples would entail, and they're desperately trying to catch up with the Russians in the event they didn't have Ukrainians to fight to the last man for them.
@VunderGuy
@VunderGuy 6 месяцев назад
@@brigidtheirish The Soviets would have smoked Western europe, at least initially. They would have lost that conflict eventually even conventionally, mind you, but I'm sorry, the sheer amount of arty they'd be spamming would have blown up most NATO formations they encountered without any of their other land based weapons being necessary except to defend their arty and secure advances. To put this into perspective, North Korea, which was always backwards compared to everyone else in the Cold War, to this day would have a meal of invading South Korea in the initial few weeks and no American plan ever thought it possible to hold off the initial battle for Seoul without nuclear weapons and no plan ever didn't have America ferrying everyone they could to the peninsula to make a big fight of and at least recover lost ground.
@brigidtheirish
@brigidtheirish 6 месяцев назад
@@VunderGuy You sure about that? Because their equipment in WWII was pathetic and they ran through a large chunk of their population with their "we have reserves" battle doctrine. North Korea's military is pathetically backwards. As for America's plans, we tend to go for overkill.

If you are looking for something that is a little lighter in tone than The Battle of Samar video I suggest Drach's videos, The Great White Fleet - The Party is On and A ship that refused to die, The USS Marblehead. They are around a half hour so a little longer than his normal videos.

'Blitzkrieg' is basically a myth, it's just combined-arms warfare. the only reason we call it Blitzkrieg is because the British Propaganda Office made it up (along with the idea of the Polish charging tanks with cavalry and such) because it made the Germans seem scarier to drive up recruitment. Germany themselves never used the term in any official capacity, and it was seen as ridiculous by higher-ups in the reich.

7:14 Quick comment on Rome and naval warfare. There's another key piece to the puzzle you might not be aware of. As you say, Rome had crap boats, but shoving a gang plank onto their boat didn't make it better. The improvement to the Roman navy mostly came about when a Carthaginian ship became grounded on a shoreline and the Romans captured it. Conveniently, it was constructed with every piece labelled like an ancient piece of IKEA furniture. The Romans reverse engineered it and went to work. Within a year they had over 300 ships built like the Carthaginian ones which had been whipping their asses.

To answer your frustration with people in positions of leadership being total petty idiots, its simple: That is humanity in a nutshell you either do good for your men and country because you really care about them and recognition is not even on your primary list of priorities or are like those idiots who only care about doing stuff if they are going to look good by doing it and are getting recognition for it. Even if it means letting people suffer the consequences of your inaction/ineptitude because you think you wouldn't get enough recognition!

Disliking because they dont like you despite your talents. yeah, that was my military career. at meps in late 1997, i scored a perfect 99 on all 4 sections faster than anyone ever at the denver meps station. at my first USAF space command satcom unit, i achieved "100% site trained" faster than anyone in the 35 year history of that unit. before i could finish my 4 years of enlistment, i was discharged because i was autistic and had issues with command. note: i was HIRED because i was autistic. i was never awarded my journeyman status, which i achieved in record time at that unit as well. i was even put in for a USAF form 1000, which is where you nominate someone for a major award for making a new way of doing things. i fixed my MILSTAR satcom terminal and made it the first "mission capable" MILSTAR unit on the entire planet, to the point where Raytheon asked me how i fixed it. i was put in by my sgt but i didnt win. i was happy to get accolades from other MILSTAR stations, including several navy vessels, on my fix action that allowed THEIR units to go mission capable. when bureaucratic BS gets in the way of good people doing good work. that was my military career. i ended my career while finalizing testing for a mobile combat weather station that is still used today for front line combat paratroopers, where they drop in, deploy the unit, and it relays weather all along the battlefront. the weather channel did a special years ago called "weather in combat" where they talked about my hardware.
