When Emily Whitehead was six years old, she became the first child ever to receive genetically-modified T cells, an experimental treatment for her leukemia. It cured her, and helped launch the field of cellular medicine. "Sunday Morning" contributor Kelefa Sanneh talks with Emily, and her parents, Kari and Tom Whitehead, about how they defeated her cancer; and with Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a leading cancer specialist and author of the new book, "The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human."

My cousin Ellie had leukemia and they were trying the same treatment with her. Unfortunately, they wouldn't do the T-cell treatment unless she was feeling okay enough to try it. In the end, the cancer was too tough and won. It's heartening to see that the T-cell treatment is working for others, and I hope someday that it'll work for all of them!

So I'm currently studying human anatomy and our professor had us write a paragraph giving our summary on an older video about gene therapy, which is very similar in topic to this. Something that everyday people have to understand is that the scientists have been studying these ideas and have been working on possible solutions for decades, so for that doctor to say that this is just the beginning, he's definitely not wrong about that. There's always going to be more research that has to be done in order to understand each human.

Being a parent of a leukemia survivor child, whose treatment lasted over 5 years, and is 41 years old now, this girl's story is so compelling. I had to wonder if Prednisone was still part of her treatment, because long term, it causes weight gain with the patient looking very puffy.

There are so many good good good hard hard hard working people in hospitals working on this problem. I am so so so thankful for all the Doctors Nurses and most of all the BioMedical research field that explores these therapies. My wife had - rounds and rounds of chemo, then STEM cell transplant and finally CAR-T cell therapy. She's in remission 4 years now. She was part of a study. We thank GOD every day. It's not an easy process to go thru. When Emily took that brief turn for the worse - its the Cytokine storm... all of the cancer cells are being attacked so fast - that there is a huge histamine response - and the person who is already sick and weak, is really thrown for a loop all at once. Its very challenging and very scary to watch a loved one go thru this. But, in the end - she keeps getting yearly scans and - its still gone. Bless Emily with another 70 years of health.

The media keeps leaving out the true miraculous part of her story. I am related to Emily and can tell you that there were several times that Emily could have died or lost her legs to an infection, or was not being treated wisely at local hospital. My nephew got “ The Whispers” which we as family think it translates as messages from Holy Spirit. If Tom would have disregarded these specific messages, Emily would have perished. From prayer cloths that made her leg pains subside, to 7000 praying PSU students when Emily was at her limits on 5 machines keeping her organs going… even the doctors were shaking their heads the next morning telling my nephew Tom that there was no medically way possible that she should be alive! God and miracles we’re definitely a part of this story, but mainstream media don’t want Tom to talk about it… want him to focus on the science part. Tom will tell you that both Faith and Science we’re walking hand in hand. I bet the doctors at CHOP will attest to the same! Peace, Jenny PS- my home town of Philipsburg PA was transformed by prayer vigils and community fundraisers. We had a long time friend have a major conversion during this time. He said he never believed, never knew how to pray, never stepped into a church. He told my family that he could see the power of prayer in motion with events in Emily’s journey. He is now a devout Catholic.

Hi I am reading through these replies and felt like answering this particular one. I am Emily’s Great Aunt. My nephew Tom can tell you that when Emily’s legs were throbbing she would ask for her special cloth that was given to her from my sister/ her grandmother. It was made from a retired robe of a Catholic Priest. Every time she used it, the pains would subside. The night she was in the ‘storm’, Tom asked my sister/his mom, “ What should I do, the doctors are saying that she pretty much won’t make it through the night? My sister said to use the Holy Oil, The Prayer Cloth, and ask for prayers… which he did. In one hour-7000 students at PSU ( connected thru THON- dance marathon for Cancer) responded with prayers. Also Tom made pivotal decisions during the touch and go times that were what he called “the whispers”- when Holy Spirit would tell him what to do. Kari his wife learned to trust when he got a message. Kari was the one who did some vital research, but Tom was guided by Spiritual Inclinations from Heaven. He still gets messages from time to time about helping others who have been told there is no hope- go home and call hospice. Everyone in our family knows that there were several miracles attributed to Emily’s story… you can check with the doctors at CHOP as well- they will say the same. God is real. Faith can move mountains. Peace, Jenny
