Gnome was created when Richard Stallman sacrificed a penguin to Satan.

I gave Gnome plenty of chances. Finally gave up on it completely a few years ago. I still find it's UI to be very awkward to use even after several years of use. Was using Xfce and Mate until I found the Budgie Desktop (which personally I like much more than Cinnamon). I can finally benefit from the Gnome Stack without their crappy shell. Nice.

Although, I will admit I have it installed on my HP Pavillion convertible laptop with Solus Project as a secondary session. I just use it for the better touch support when I crawl into bed and want to watch some Netflix before I go to sleep, but that's the only functional use I've ever found for it...

+Sean Nelson I actually like GNOME Shell, maybe that's because I got too much hipster inside me though. XD *begins putting on flannel from the thrift store, then listens to indie rock while playing indie games* Just jk, except the indie game part. :P

+RoundDuckMan lol. I live in Portland and you just described about half the population of this city :) To each their own I guess. I would never tell anyone not to run the Gnome Shell. Everyone has to use what works for them. I wanted to like the Gnome Shell. I'm a huge fan of minimalism on the desktop but it just didn't click with me.

Sean Nelson I do admit the "playing indie games" part, but it's usually because a lot of them are legitimately good games that are certainly higher quality than some local indie band. :P

+Sean Nelson BTW, Budgie has some real potential. It has the traditionalism and customization (though maybe some more of that) people want, but it NEEDS indicators. Steam, Kazam, and others use them. It's also a bit buggy, and I don't recommend installing the metapackage "budgie-desktop-environment" from the Budgie Remix ppa, because it installs dbus-user-session, which really messes with Budgie and GNOME.

Gnome 3 was a stillborn child, it's Microsoft's revenge on Linux. If you liked Gnome 2 come on over to MATE, the bestest Linux DE ever!!!

+Orca Flotta Really.. :P I think Gnome 3 is good, it's just... different. Just like i3. :P

***** It looks nice, especially with ARC (new king of flatness? ;) ). As for centrally controlled, you know the source code is open, and forks exist? Also there's GNOME Tweak. That's how I got the Places menu and the dash to dock thing. I admit there needs to be a "Mutter Tweak" though, maybe I could learn C and other languages to create that. :P As for slowness, some parts are slow-ish, and some parts are perfectly fine. Bugs I guess. It isn't too bad though, and only affects animations, mainly animations of the activites menu.

Perfectly captures just what a cluster***k that GNOME is since they introduced GNOME 3. It used to be my go-to on everything, and now I refuse to use it.

If someone combines the lightweight-ness of LXDE and the tweakability of GNOME, that would be heaven.

+jhon co Fork it and get people to help you out, so you can have a power user's GNOME. Heck I'd think Nautilus needs another fork, like Nemo, but more integrated with GNOME 3 than Cinnamon.

Nice song! I like gnome for the appearance and yes it look similar to a tablet or phone interface but you still use it like a PC. I really like the minimalist look it has and I prefer it to KDE. I don't really like KDE by the way because it has a lot of bugs and I didn't notice any bugs in gnome yet. It's all a matter of preference and I don't only use gnome I also use i3.

Well it seems they're listening to feedback now, Nautilus is useful again, with smaller icons and immediate delete back on the map, maybe feature-wise it'll be on the level of Nemo in a few years. xD

Rip Nautilus. You have been replaced and maintained by SANE developers :)
@theroundduckman
@theroundduckman 8 лет назад
Linux4UnMe Yeah Nautilus has seen better days, there is a reason Canonical is using 3.14's Nautilus instead of the disasters of 3.16 and 3.18. 3.20 is pretty decent with many missing features brought back (yay for immediate deletion and smaller icons!), and 3.22 is continuing that trend, so let's wait and see... *now if they restore the old touchpad settings, why remove edge scrolling in 3.20, why...*

lol :) i was against gnome 3 for a long time and now its everything i use. i cant even look at this ugly mate or cinnamon desktop anymore. or lxde/xfce...lxde/xfce is nice on a rasperry pi but i cant look at this shit on a real pc anymore :D kde is a different story. i liked kde3+4 so i will try kde 5 on a different system soon.

+Ronald Marty I think cinnamon can look nice though, when using numix or arc-theme. But Gnome is fantastic, just would love more customization and speed improvements. Oh and GNOME Files (poor old Nautilus, LMAO) sucks in features. Heck, why icons are monster sized in 3.16 and 3.18, WHY? Now you got Canonical trying to use 3.14's Nautilus on a 3.18 desktop. The only thing good about it is Google Drive support and support for header bars.
