I recently did a paper for school about Wes Anderson and his film style and I decided to focus on this film specifically. It’s just so packed full of gorgeous details in the way the sets look, how it’s shot, the acting etc to the point it made writing the paper a piece of cake!
For some reason I looked at your Pfp before I read this and ended up reading it aloud in a General Grievous impression word for word with coughs and everything. All I can say is that this another fine addition to the comment section.
I absolutely love that you made this entire video in a 4:3 aspect ratio like how The Grand Budapest Hotel uses different aspect ratios to tell what time the story takes place.
I actually agree with what dumbsville said at the beginning we have too much popcorn movies. I love superheroes but we seriously need to chill. Like I want to see more Truman shows and Drive ‘s, or Walt’s into the bashier. We’re missing stuff like this nowadays
Another amazing director thats uses this panting like composition is akiyuki simbo founder of studio shaft it makes me glade to see a nother director use this compostion style
I think a big thing about a lot of these shots is where it wants the viewer. Many movies very much want the viewer looking at their center stuff, the characters, big explosions, whatever. However a lot of scenes in this movie give off a strange vibe, like it wants you to look everywhere, take in everything. The scenes are designed like both the foreground and background are in a viewer's focus and it certainly helps with the painting feel, but this style actually reminds me most of a diaroma, a scene within a box kinda. Like if you were to zoom out you'd see their standing in a very tiny box.
Trevor Noah’s take on all “bad”movies being about “black people suffering”, is very interesting coming from a guy who has a book about his own experiences as a mixed person living in apartheid. You’d think he’d have some sort of understanding as to why movies like that are important or relevant. I’d understand if he specifically pointed out a movie that was maybe distasteful or very strongly missed the mark but to generalize like that is very weird to me. Idk i’m white so my opinion doesn’t mean anything but i was forced to read his book for a high school english class.
Bro, I love this film and it getting the Dumbsy treatment feels like a personalized golden guft has been given to me. And your take on the flatness....I found the world visually enormous in a lot of places and claustrophobic where it needed to be but I think that cane in part to the sets embracing their dreamlike settings rather than trying and failing to make them 'real', resulting in simply ugly visuals. I also liked that between the two eras, we saw how architecture and design changed between when the story originally took place and the era the narrator visited it, both having such nostalgic tones to wras that have gone by but even if the 60s was the final era of the hotel, there was still a sense of wanting to keep it alive even if it was in a time it didn't fit into. Okay, I've talked too much.
As a Hungarian from Budapest (not saying because I'm offended or smt) but to sound even more nerdy and based at the same time, pronounce Budapest the proper way with the 's' in it pronounced like 'sh' like in 'shroom' for example. Also... HUNGARY MENTIONED RAHHHHHHHHH TF IS A GOOD ECONOMY RAHHHHH MAGYARORSZÁG A LEGELSŐ
Not being able to review _The Grand Budapest Hotel_ is merely an expression of fear. I commend you for not really surrendering to that fear. I believe you reviewed it as properly, and honestly as you needed to. Anyone who says otherwise will just have to live with being pitifully wrong.
You should check out RockDog (2016) , the first movie was ok it had some big names casted, but then the second movie. Jesus. I skipped the opening, and 30 seconds in I could tell this was made by Splash Animation. I think the series is worth a review.
Can you bring back the old "Yo I got a drill I got some dough *kanye West* I sold a little weeed but I can never sell my soul and when *Sonic running* I'm in LA amma need another ramen bowl let's go" intro? I prefer it wayyyyy more over the "Homie homie save my homie 20 7 7 better save my homie *muffled* man I swear to god bro" intro.
wes anderson reminds me of tarantino in the way that they are the peak of pushing the limit of what movies are capeable of and if its not bonded by moneygrab mentality -- in other words if they view film making as an artform. off topic i just happened to be living in budabest.
I love the scene where Gustav shows up to the funeral and the son of the old woman just stands up and marches to him, yelling “THAT FUCKING FIGGIT!” (Can’t say it but you know what it means).
I'm likely to watch this film later. I think you might enjoy reviewing Thief and the Cobbler(recobbled cut specifically), given the level of technical skill that went into making it. Granted, despite being only a few minutes shorter than Who Framed Roger Rabbit(same animation director, Richard Williams), it feels much slower, which isn't inherently bad. Animated stuff doesn't always have to be fast-paced. As laughable as this statement has become, animation can be more cinematic and slower-paced. The problem is that the film seems to go on forever, notably in the climax. It's a solid watch for the visuals alone, even if it has tons of sequences that aren't finished, and are only storyboards or pencil tests. Mark 5 has tons of new shots, some of which I feel aren't anywhere near as good as others, and the animation done by the completion firm hired to finish it back in the 90s after Richard Williams got fired is also very inconsistent in quality.
man you don't need to attack Trevor, HOWEVER... I'm so happy to see people taking about one of the worlds greatest directors that nobody knows. I've seen fans get mad like Wes is some niche that they want to gatekeep, but he's been a thing for a long time, and I know many people who just don't like that kind of movie, and that's okay. One big thing is that reviewing this movie is impossible because you cant talk about it without wanting to explain the whole movie to someone.
