What an excellent introduction to a discussion on how musical taste/ appreciation evolves. PS CAN’s Vitamin C has the greatest groove all-time! Any challengers out there? The Associates Gloomy Sunday may run close. 🤔

No argument from me on “Vitamin C,” Ash. I can’t attest to The Associates, though. I’ll just trust your instincts there. Good to hear from you! Hope all is well your way. ✌🏻

I'm glad you did this one. Because of all the different sections, I could write a lengthy comment but even I wouldn't want to read it later. I don't know if I saw the same video as the one you referred to but it was a similar gist. I can't speak to this person's experiences and I've only been watching VC videos since 2020 or 2021 so I don't know how the vinyl community was different in the past. However it's always seemed warm and collegial. The (mostly) guys in the British VC are always encouraging viewers to follow their fellow menbers. I like a world where Dillon from Noble Records can go on the Jazz Bums or where Dom and Mazzy can meet up or DG can pop in the Virtual Pub with John and Hedley. Maybe it's cliquish but maybe it's just friendly. Frankly if I were on RU-vid I'd probably just assume that all the comments would be negative so I'd avoid reading them as much as possible. It seems like you do an okay job.
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 4 месяца назад
I think the biggest problem with that guy’s video was he was making sweeping assumptions based off a really small sample size. This is a societal problem, really. I don’t get enough views to truly get trolled. Somebody like Mazzy gets trolled on the regular. Thanks for the insightful comment as a always. Sorry for the delayed response. Cheers! ✌🏻

Honest and thoughtful response... would expect nothing less. I was wondering what other people thought about that dude's 'problem with the VC.' I am overdue for a Krautrock deep dive. Regarding the age... I think your ears have to be open and the same goes with food or literature. So many times, people I respected tried to share books, cuisine or music and I just wasn't ready to receive them. No shame. And then, all of a sudden, Alice Coltrane / Faulkner / Burdock root are totally perfect.
@TheDigitalGramophone

The desire for new experiences is key, I think. Most people are just happy with what they already like. I don't ever want to be like that. Although, I do grow more and more docile in other areas in my life. There's always a "my problem with the Vinyl Community" video being made. Now, most of the ones I've seen in the past are made by younger people (in their 20s or younger) that feel alienated because of snobbery or the inability to afford a certain level of equipment or audiophile pressings. Those videos are always valid, and if I comment, I usually tell them that not every vinyl collector is like that. "Just have fun." All that jazz. This guy was just seeking attention. And thought he knew something thousands of other record collectors didn't. All based on an extremely small sample. Hope all is well, Alexander. Cheers!

I went digging with an old friend a while back and he said something that highlighted the difference between us. He gestured towards all the second hand records in the racks and said 'Look at all this music I'm never gonna hear'. His point being that his approach to consuming music was to stay very narrow but dig very deep. Whereas I have this insatiable need to hear every significant or interesting record that ever existed so end up doing an awful lot of surface skating. With kraut rock I never went beyond Can and Neu! but I guess there's still time.
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 4 месяца назад
Oh, me too, James. I was definitely a surface level “dabbler” for many years. You kind of have to be if you’re open to a wide variety of genres. I would say I’ve kind of settled into my focused select areas now. But who knows? Maybe a dub/reggae period of exploration is about to kidnap my attention and wallet? 🤣

If you are feeling "complacent" that's ok. You don't have to comment back.😄♥️ I understand. I just wanted to tell you that you inspired me to listen to Karen Dalton. She's great and I really think my daughter would love her. Billie Holiday is her favorite artist and Karen's style has a similar quality. I need to pick up that Alice Coltrane album. The disco ball totally works. You should keep it up. 🤗 Have a great weekend.

Hi Melinda! Speaking of comment responses... you are the queen! I don't know how you do it. I have also been lazy about commenting on other's videos. Your 5 years in the VC video was great. Thank you for the kind mention. And your albums that greatly affected my life video was great too. The stories connected those albums. Karen Dalton is so fantastic. What unique voice and I do agree she does sound influenced by Billie Holiday. The disco ball is still there! I'm totally lazy about taking it down. My daughter's birthday was Taylor Swift themed! She's obsessed. She's 5 going on 15 and it's kind of breaking my heart. Lol But, I also love her enthusiasm for music. I hope you're doing well! Cheers

Recorded at three different times, Bill. I’ve done this before. I don’t know if I actually wish I knew what I know now when I was younger. I’m okay with discovering things when I discovered them. Maybe I wish I had let this friend of mine from high school convince me to collect vinyl. Instead, I thought he was crazy. 🤣 Yeah. Big enough for all of us to exist. But how about we stay away from sweeping generalizations?

Hey, nice pick up of the new press of Karen Dalton, I got one of her RSD release that was amazing so I guess I will pick this up. Need to check out that Drifters, sounds really interesting as you felt a bit exited there about it. Nice middle interludes. And hey man, you don't need to make apologize for being slow on responses, we all have a real life and it's easy to miss, I'm not offended, because even I can be both slow and miss. Great talk, got me really thinking about this. Love the part with your story when you found Suger and that it was only Suger for many years before you started researching some history of the band and found Bob Mould and Husker Dü, almost so that the music completely takes over and who is behind it is unimportant at first. Great stuff, really got my brain spinning here and rethinking the past. Cheers
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 4 месяца назад
They should just keep those Karen Dalton albums in print. Every time they repress them, they sell out immediately. The demand is obviously there. That's a great point about the music taking precedent over who is behind it. When I was a teen, that was always the case. So much so that I didn't even realize which bands were more cool. I also didn't have a subscription to any music magazines. I think if I had the internet when I was in high school, I would've been into a lot of bands earlier than I was. I think so much of my channel and my relationship with music is built on nostalgia. Even if I keep up with newer sounds, it's still more about my past. Thanks for hanging out. Cheers!
@popsandclicks
@popsandclicks 4 месяца назад
@@TheDigitalGramophone Karon Dalton is a great artist for sure. "In My Own Time" was release last year, a record that is also worth picking up if you are into her. I'm a bit like a sponge, sucking up everything that swings great and sounds good in my ears. Being wide is really dangerous but also fun to dive into something new and interesting, always been openminded when it comes to music and never really bordered if they are cool or not. Regarding the channel and nostalgia, I guess that is something we build our channels on, as the past is where we have the knowledge and that is always easy to share. Take care my friend and happy spinning. Cheers

The thing about taste, mood, listening to older stuff, is that it's a moving target or evolves. Some of the older stuff I collected during the late 70s,80s (punk, new wave) I wish I had bought other things like maybe some more ECM records or jazz, but it's an evolution to get where I'm at now. The other thing too is that we're more or less influneced by the local record store in the town we buy stuff at (not so much now with the internet). But pre-internet if the store owner wasn't into a particular genre, band, etc. They probably wouldn't handle it, so it wasn't available to buy. That's why I always liked looking elsewhere when I travelled.
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 4 месяца назад
Some excellent points here. I actually edited out a diatribe about how the internet changed everything. In almost every example, I talk about first buying the album in the 90s but then not truly digging deeper until at least the 2000s. And, yes, this was totally because of having the internet at my fingertips. The rabbit holes were so much more difficult to find in the 90s, 80s, 70s, etc. You did have to rely on your local record store. Or pay attention to the bands you loved and who they talked about in interviews. Sometimes fanzines, band zines, or label record zines would point people towards new avenues. The internet is a blessing and a curse. It’s overwhelming at times - all the different pathways to musical knowledge. Cheers, Dave! ✌🏻

I remember seeing that Can album in the early 70’s at White Front in the three for $1 section. I passed because of the cover. In a similar vein around 78 I had the opportunity to see Alice Coltrane live at the Lighthouse. I passed, thinking she was just cashing in on the Coltrane name. My friends said the gig was very good. I’m sure they were right.

The Karen Dalton is a lovely sounding pressing, yet I still prefer the Capitol press. I'm assuming you've seen that doc, maybe we discussed...what a troublemaker. Enigmatic and a gifted performer. Something about her way around a song is so hypnotic. Crazy she never released any of her own music. I'm doing my best to avoid common pitfalls of the VC but I think what's working best is buying less and focusing more. I guess I'm going for more a tastes great than less filling. How's that boxset holding up? I recommend not storing them in the box, or else playback won't happen. I do think Know By Heart is their best record and hopefully they compile or box up those next 3.
@TheDigitalGramophone

I actually haven’t seen the full doc, but I have watched clips on RU-vid. I’ve still only spun two of the records from the AmAnSet box. Also having some gear issues right now, so taking some time off from spinning. Maybe more on that later…
