On the 31st of March 2011 Kenia Monge made plans to meet with some friends at the 24K lounge in Downtown Denver. In the early hours of the next morning after a few hours of drinking and dancing, Kenia told her friends she was going to the bathroom but Kenia never returned to her friends in the club.

How about we stop telling young women that it should be their right to get as drunk as they want and other people should be responsible for them when we ALL know that not only is this not true, but it is also not reality? In no world would I be given any grace for leaving my car unlocked with the key inside and my car got stolen. It is my right to have my possession not stolen but everyone and their dog understands that high risk behaviour leads to undesirable outcomes. But somehow we are now encouraging young girls to not mitigate risks because your friends, the bars, the bouncers and strangers should take care of you? "Your actions are other people's responsibility because we don't victim blame" has become the dumbest and most dangerous slogan of the past few years. If anything, these stories seem to be happening more often. And alcohol-related deaths are increasing for women, faster than for men. So keep up the good job.

It’s not their problem once they are out of the club. Their duty of care is for those inside the club. She should have been smarter and made better decisions. Sneaking into a club, underage drinking, going back to a random guys apartment, talking to another random man on the street, getting into a van with another man she didn’t know. She could have asked the bouncers to go get her bag and phone, or tell her friends and she didn’t. She didn’t even try to get back in.

After the SA, he beat her so hard with his fists that he broke her jaw and gave her severe head trauma. This story was very emotional for me. When I was in my early teens, I too was in a club with a fake ID with some friends. Got super drunk & on my way to the bathroom, was approached by a random man who put his arm around me & led me straight out of the club. He then proceeded to take me to a hotel, where he took my clothes off & raped me. I remember him being so soft spoken & being very gentle with me. When it was over, he drove me around for well over an hour, trying to help me find out where I stayed. Finally, I was able to remember the street & he dropped me off. The next day, I found a note in my back pocket that read, “Let’s do lunch…Andrew” with his phone #. I thank God that I got home safe because I know it could’ve ended way differently. She didn’t try to get back inside and maybe she didn’t tell them she didn’t have her phone. It’s not a bouncers duty to get anyone home safe. She wanted to be a big girl and sneak into a club illegally and drink. She made a bunch of silly immature decisions that night. The bouncers are NOT to blame. I know they aren’t responsible for making sure she’s okay after they kick her out as part of their job, but I feel like it would have been anyone’s moral obligation to at least help her get an Uber or make sure she had her phone with her to call for a ride. I’m sure they deal with stupid drunk people every day, but kicking her to the curb when she was so young and all alone, with none of her belongings is fucked up. It’s also fucked up that the girls she was there with were not concerned whatsoever. They had all of her means of transportation and communication with them. The least they could have done is try calling her family or a different friend to drop her items off with, and actually tell someone that she had disappeared that night. Lastly, I hate that cops don’t take it seriously right when someone goes missing. I understand that It’s hard when the missing person is an adult because they very well could have disappeared intentionally. But given the fact that she was wasted and had no means of communication the night she went missing, and everyone who knew her saying this was unlike her, I think they should have at least made an effort. If they found her and she told them she didn’t want to be found, they could have just told the parents they made contact and that would be that. Unfortunately, in so many cases it’s the 72 hour waiting period that fucks someone over.

That rule stating you have to wait 72 hours to file a missing persons report has to change. That’s a ridiculously long amount of time.

I went to junior high and high school with Travis Forbes in Fort Collins, Colorado. We went to Lincoln Junior High and Poudre High School. I also attended parties he was at several times. At one of the parties I attended with Travis, he stole several items from my friend's house. We caught him, surrounded him and were able to get the items back. Since before we knew him, he was constantly in trouble with the law. He would always try selling stolen goods to classmates in school. I think most people including myself, felt he had an even darker side. In fact, strangely enough another friend of mine who also knew Travis were wondering what had happened to him. Neither of us had thought about him in years. I made a comment along the lines of "One day Travis will be in prison for murder." Three days following this conversation, the same friend i made this half-hearted comment to, called me to tell me Travis just got arrested for murder. Conversations between school mates on social media seemed to feel the same way I did about Travis. Many of the women at our school said he had "always creeped them out." In other words, though devastated by the news of the incidents, I don't think anyone was necessarily surprised.

I always genuinely appreciate when I get updates on the surviving victims of these tragedies. Thanks for sharing Lydia's inspiring story during this.

The people that work at the club that put her outside knowing she was drunk by herself with no ID no personal anything should be brought up on charges if they weren’t

Why? If you go to a bar and you know you have to figure out a way back home, then don't get trashed... That's no one's responsibility except yours. I don't understand why people keep posting this non sense.

@@lindaarrington9397 that's not their problem. The vanishing of personal responsibility is the real crime. If you ever think you don't have to be personally responsible for yourself then I feel sorry for you bud.

I remember in my early 20s i went to a club with my friends and had to run outside, in winter, to make a call because it was loud as hell inside. I was outside for all of 5 minutes before getting denied re entry by the same bouncer who checked my iID initially, and watched me walk outside 5 minutes earlier. I had no coat and no bag and begged to be let back in. Apparently he thought i was too drunk when i reality i was freakin freezing and now angry and alone. My calls to my friends went unanswered because of the noise inside. He threatened to call police and i begged him to because i needed help. I nearly went home in a strangers car when my friends came out looking for me. Its absolutely irresponsible to do things like this.

They say that stabbing someone is the most personal form of injury/murder. But, as a nurse, I know how the body works and I feel that strangulation is more personal. Especially if done by hand. It’s not a quick death. It’s prolonged and the body reacts violently. It must take a powerful hate of some kind that do that.
