Ricky Goldsworth is an alternate persona of Ryan (like how Markiplier has Darkiplier) that sometimes gets mentioned on BFU (and Ryan has occasionally acted as him during panels and such, it's actually fairly spooky!). Shane's alternate persona(s), in contrast, currently include C.C. Tinsley, Banjo Mclintock, Long Legs Madej, and himself as a demon, haha.

Actually the only people that there are evidence of murder for were the two indigenous Americans, Salvador and Luis, who were already near death when they were killed, (which doesn’t discount the fact that racism definitely played a role). Shane doesn’t go into it the best in the video, which is understandable it’s very difficult to keep track of, but the timeline in the mountains was actually pretty complicated with pretty much everyone who died verifiably dying from causes other than murder. People were buried in the snow, which preserved the bodies. Eventually the people in the mountains sincerely ran out of food. Like they were eating the cowhide of their roofs. And people realized that they did have food out in the snow banks. At that point it was sit and watch your children slowly wither away from starvation, or give them what food is available.

The Wikipedia page is quite extensive if you want answers to these questions without reading the journals themselves. The Professor did a great job here, but there's so many mode details to the tale that just didn't fit in this lecture, it's worth looking into... if you can stomach it.

This isn’t even the only story of white folks resorting to cannibalism as native people look at them like ‘dude wtf’. Look at the story of the sinking of the ‘Essex’, where the survivors of the shipwreck could’ve rowed to the Marquesas islands (the nearest by), but fear there were cannibals there. And snowy in the sense of snowed in, meters deep with the danger of avalanches and rocky ways pretty much making things more difficult If you get stranded in snowed in mountains, you're either dead or you have to know how to survive in that climate and environment Edit: the Natives were said to actually be close to death due to malnutrition, the lack of energy and food and the freezing climate - so they killed them partly out of mercy, partly to make an ensured death quicker and give them a better chance of survival. By the accounts of the people they encountered after finally reaching civilization, they had walked their feet bloody and torn that it left foot trails in the snow, they had freeze burns and they were haggered and gaunt. And they probably didn't know how far away they were from their end goal, it's what we know today and perhaps people only back then when they heard about the event The rescue parties couldn't even carry much resources and were also quickly exhausted; they almost left people behind, with their family members promising pay after the rescue or begging them for their aid only for them to not abandon people and keep oh carrying them through the winter And sending someone to jail for going insane by almost starving? Hastings couldn't be made responsible because he only gave the advice, but it was considered the fault of the dying people for following the advice in the first place Most stories of people surviving in the freezing cold always end extreme - the French in Napoléons army all died horribly or succumbed to cannibalism or the cold just because of the winter - the same for the germans in World War 2. The Scott-Amundsen race is another good example, although without cannibalism. The Franklin expedition and also the most recent event of the stranded people in the Andes.

@@z2yn You've got some great info there but the issue is, on the part of the natives being close to death from starvation, that was a story told by the survivors who had eaten the natives. They'll claim it was mercy because it makes it seem less awful. I'd be willing to bet it wasn't about mercy, it was about survival and fear. They feared that the natives (who were named Luis and Salvador) would go back to their people and tell them about the white people eating human flesh, which may have turned the natives hostile to the Donner party. The second issue is with the whole "close to death because of starvation" thing. They (both Donner party and natives) WEREN'T starving at that point. They were hungry certainly, but they misinterpreted the situation. They thought that the people that were dying had died of hunger when for the most part it was because of disease. So naturally the natives would not have been close to death from starvation either. I'd recommend checking out the video on this on the AskAMortician channel since Caitlyn would do a much better job explaining this than I could.

This was actually the reason that many of the rescuing troops rationed food to concentration camp survivors at the end of the holocaust, which was tough but needed to be done so they didn't overeat to death.
