Hey all,
Back with another video! This time we're talking about Nirvana's In Utero and the amp Kurt used for tracking guitars. In this video I discuss Kurts amp, the recording methods used, and give it a go myself with a 1977 Twin Reverb amp I picked up recently.
While I didn't cover every song, this video will give you a good idea of the tonal possibilities of this amp with combined with the SansAmp and DS-2.
I hope you enjoy! Please let me know what you think in the comments below.
Special thanks to ‪@jq.guitars‬ , ‪@AaronRash‬ & ‪@johnpickk7526‬ for providing information which helped make this video possible.
Thanks for watching :)

I think you pretty much nailed it man. That speaker and the Veleno is the secret to the whole album. You can pretty much nail the distortion tone with or without the Veleno, just need to have the right settings on the Sansamp

Imo the twin will absolutely nail the inutero tone along with Kurt’s live tone. I know there has been a lot of videos about speakers and such but really that mesa, twin and quad all have the same clean circuit. You pair any of them with the sans amp and the poly chorus and it nails it Awesome video, I love your vhs style openings and tone recreations. Keep ‘em coming

Great job, just heard a Billy Corgan interview where he states he was sad when kurt died because that was his number 1 competition, I wonder if Kurt knew that if things would've turned out different.

Very close to the in utero sound. These sound like they have a lot less depth to their sound then the oxford speakers just like the orange utahs imo. Sounds really good

Really cool video, one thing I will note though is that those speakers shown in the back of the cab are not Fender Utah speakers. Those speakers are the standard Special Design blue label speakers made by Eminence. Utah speakers have orange labels that say Utah, and are very very rarely found in '74 Quad Reverbs and even more rarely in select early 70s Twins, if any at all. They still do just fine with In Utero sounds, but wont quite match it.
@wastewoodrockers5526
@wastewoodrockers5526 День назад
Thanks a lot! Yes you’re right. I made this video before I really understood the different speaker models used by Fender so forgive the inaccuracy! To make matters more confusing there are orange label Utahs that look identical to those found in the 74’ Quads bar the cones which is really the most important part. Thanks for the comment!
@The_Real_Shrimp
@The_Real_Shrimp День назад
@@wastewoodrockers5526 Yeah it's the orange ones to try an look out for, this are the In Utero Speakers for sure. The blue label Fender speakers are very deceiving, because I think a few are made by Utah, but most are made by the other company. And Oxfords are different too. Like I said, those speakers in your cab will do you quite fine. I'm looking to get a set myself or a set of vintage Celestion G12M-70s or Celestion G12T-75s, which are really good for that tone and Bleach as well

@@The_Real_Shrimp Yeah I’ve got a 4x12 with some 80s T75s they sound great! My new favourite has to be the M70s though. I bought some for a 2x12 and I love them.

@@wastewoodrockers5526 I was trying to buy an 80s Celestion G12M-70 on Reverb yesterday but for some reason had my account suspended. I recently just bought a 1972 Twin Reverb and was gonna put those speakers in it to really get the bleach sound. Those are the same speakers in Jack Endino's cab that Kurt used to record with

Its amazing tanks à lot, i always try to reach this particular sond... i have a question, which pedal create this clean tone in in utero like for heart shape box or others one, its very unique
@wastewoodrockers5526
@wastewoodrockers5526 10 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot! You’re welcome. For the clean tone, there are two guitar tracks. One is straight into the amp, no effects / pedals. The other is into the amp with the volume control turned up and a SansAmp pedal in front of the amp. If you want to see the exact settings for the sansamp I recommend watching @Aaron Rash on RU-vid. He has the settings in his videos.

@@wastewoodrockers5526 I think I'm confused because if you search for Utah speakers blue label, in the pictures you can see it has only these long narrow holes and doesn't have any horizontal ones like yours. I'm just going so much in depth because I found a used twin with the same speakers as yours and wanted to be sure. Thanks for the reply
@wastewoodrockers5526
@wastewoodrockers5526 5 месяцев назад
@@user-ye1sq2sm4y Yeah they all look very similar. I can confirm the speakers in my twin are Utah. To be honest no matter which speakers you get, if it’s a mid 70s twin reverb they’ll all sound about the same. The Utah speakers in the Twin Reverbs are nothing like the orange Utahs found in the Quad reverb. That’s the only amp they came in sadly. Personally I love my twin and they don’t sound super far off the quad either. The main thing is the mic placement and combinations. I’d recommend checking out some of my newer videos as the tones are a lot better than this one.
@user-ye1sq2sm4y

@@wastewoodrockers5526 Alright got it. I think the one I found is mid 70s because it has the master volume knob and for 900 I think it's a good deal. Also one more thing what should I look for when buying a used vintage amp??
@wastewoodrockers5526
@wastewoodrockers5526 5 месяцев назад
Nice! I’m not an amp expert by any means but I’d generally recommend looking for something that is in original condition, and then having it serviced by a tech if you know one. Most amps 30+ years old are in need of some sort of maintenance, generally I end up getting most things serviced even if the seller claims it already has been because you just never know

Short scale fender style guitar, any fender style amp with a clean channel and some run the mill pedals like a ds1. It's crazy how many cobain "tone" videos there are out there. This isn't rocket science.
@wastewoodrockers5526
@wastewoodrockers5526 7 месяцев назад
Not true at all IMO but that will get you in the ballpark for the earlier stuff sure
@stillpist
@stillpist 7 месяцев назад
"will get you in the ballpark"? Lmao. You are either selling pixie dust for clicks and monetization or you have fallen into the mass formation psychosis that every other nirvana gear obsessed channel has fallen under. The only actual difficult thing to nail in Kurt's tone has to do with not owning a vintage echoflanger/polychorus since no other pedal accurately reproduces that sound. Everything else is now run of the mill and easily attainable thanks to Kurts influence. Want a Jaguar with humbuckers? There's 20 options, ect. A twin reverb? One of the most famous amps of all time that you can everywhere. There are more ds1's than any other pedal out there in the world. Super distortion pickups? One of the most common aftermarket pickups in existence. And you don't even need all of that, but my point remains. You aren't some magician.
@wastewoodrockers5526
@wastewoodrockers5526 7 месяцев назад
@@stillpist What on earth are you talking about? You are arguing against claims I’ve never made. All I said was that ‘Some twin and a DS-1’ isn’t it if your after a specific sound. For a start the DS-1 wasn’t even used on In Utero and there’s a million versions of the Twin, none of which were even used for the recording of In Utero. ‘Selling pixie dust’ what? Lol I’m not selling anything, this video was me trying to get a similar sound to the album that’s it, there’s nothing more to it. I’m not claiming to be any sort of ‘magician’, I have no idea where you got this idea from. Obviously a lot of this gear is more readily available now, I never said it wasn’t so what’s your point? If you think it’s really just as simple as plug a DS-1 into an twin and you suddenly have the sound I don’t know what to say.
