Disney decided to remake a movie that didn’t do well the first time, during a period where their movies haven’t been doing well in theaters. This feels like that SpongeBob quote. “How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?!”
@@justaguyonyoutube4592 I put it in the "Batman and Robin" category. It CAN be enjoyably stupid in some ways and entertaining at times, but they are BOTH bad movies.
@@sparrow420500 Yes, in your opinion. I thought it was charming and a callback to when Disney used to make actual movies, even if they weren’t destined to be successful.
Oh now that someone in the comments refers to the 'Eddie Murphy version ' being better......I actually did watch the film...but I don't remember the plot - or even one or two funny scenes- the fact I'm watching Reaper talk about the reboot when it wasn't good the fkin first time....maybe 3 times the charm Disney eh!
This is like releasing a Christmas movie in the summer as well. It's way too early and out of place. The marking team needs to go back to grades school to learn about the months again.
I recently watched the Vincent Price House on Haunted Hill. Even found it in color on Tubi, I think. Very thrilling but some noticeable plot holes or rather subplots going just nowhere.
A really good ghost movie is Sinister from 2012, in which a true-crime writer moves into a house with his family, where he finds old film of people being killed in gruesome ways. He tries to find the removed parts of the film, to see who committed the murders. It is chilling, even though you don't see the ghosts that much.
Great movie that doesn’t rely on showing you the monster but instead it shows you of what this monster is capable of, therefor it’s mysterious and ambiguous. It’s great that way. I like that movie.
I find that the most chilling movies are where you don't see the monster that much as fear of an unknown monster is much scarier. Or at least one you barely see, or only have glimpses of. That or an entity kind of like in Hereditary. Or even It Follows where it takes many forms so you don't actually know what it looks like. Smile was similar but when you saw more of the monsters true form towards the end I kind of stopped being freaked out by it.
I showed my sister the original and she liked it even though I didn’t. We both saw the remake and we both liked it. You’d be surprised how good some childhoods are despite the messed up world we live in.
I think it's a lot of fun. It's the perfect movie to put on when you have the entire family over at your house and the only people who are actually going to pay any attention to it are kids anyway. Who doesn't love looking up and seeing Eddie Murphy being Eddie Murphy?
100% agree. I think Eddie was fantastic in his role, restrained from his usual clown-style. The movie has a soul. The new version will be quickly forgotten.
“I don’t understand why people aren’t supporting the writers strike, I mean look at all the terrible TV shows that have been canceled because they stopped working” - moistcritical, unironically
@@billr3053 I’ve been called every “ist” and “phobe” in the book. I care not for such silly and meaningless words nor do they mean anything to me anymore other than just labels and buzzwords to make the one using them feel better about themselves.
@@josephsalmonte4995 Possibly. They probably don’t think and deviously plan that far ahead. They just tick off the woke boxes because that has become the new normal. Especially in their industry. Not understanding the consequences and possible backlash of consistently misrepresenting demographics.
What i love about these reviews is that he'll give his review in the first 5 seconds. You don't need to wait for 10 years. The rest of it us always brilliant 👏
From the description here, did anyone else feel like this movie is rather similar to the 2001 movie with Tony Shalhoub called Thirteen Ghosts (or Thir13en Ghosts)? What with filling a mansion with ghosts and people being lured to the mansion by the villain in order to accomplish his goals. Most of the ghosts in the mansion are threatening to the characters, but some helpful or benign. A dead wife is a big character arc aspect for one of the characters. A dead wife is also part of the villain's schemes. And the finale requires someone to willingly die and become the final ghost. All of the ghosts also turn on the villain in the end. Furthermore, the mansion alters itself at random (a mechanism designed by the villain), trapping people in places with ghosts. However, there doesn't really seem to be a point in having this feature within the house and really just puts the people the villain wants to self-sacrifice to succeed in his plans. It's really just a means to trap people inside the mansion and then force people into and trap them specific areas with ghosts they need to escape until the next time the house rotates and the doors unlock. While the camera lens that lets you see ghosts is a dead story device in Haunted Mansion, in Thirteen Ghosts they have special glasses handed out that everyone wears, which lets them see the ghosts and helps them avoid/escape them later. Of course there are differences (like nobody can leave the mansion in Thirteen Ghosts and people are in constant mortal danger), the cast is smaller, the 2001 movie is suppose to be adult horror, and the villain's goals are different, but I just kept thinking about that movie throughout this review.
Ahhh, I love the original Haunted Mansion. The make up design on the ghouls are amazing and still hold up to this day. You have to give props to them. Good humour as well I thought.
I have a lot of nostalgic love for the original Haunted Mansion, this remake makes no sense why it should exist. It already had a minority cast, so that can’t be a reason for a ‘modern reboot’
Oddly, when I heard this movie was being made, I was practically zapped with the realization that I still owned a McDonald's toy from the 2003 version. I don't even recall watching the movie just hearing the song that the toy would sing. I wonder where that toy specifically went to yet I also refuse to look for it.
Nowadays, I don't even download for free if one of the main characters is black or a woman's face is in the center of its movie poster, especially an Asian woman, even though I am Asian. Those movies are most likely bad and not worth watching. In fact, I don't think they care anymore. I just wonder how they get paid. Does anybody care?
One of my favorite creepypastas of all time has to be "Grad Night At the Haunted Mansion", which is one of the few creepypastas I listen to time again and again due to it scaring me so bad. The thing in the story that made me legit terrified was the box hat ghost since it was implied to be an omen of death while also being an abandoned creepy animatronic. If I am more threatened from a hat box animatronic that may or may not be an actual ghost in a story than the actual ghost in the movie, I'd say thats kind of bad.
In my opinion too, the Hat Box Ghost sounds too much like the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast". Thats not the way I pictured him sounding. I pictured him sounding more hollow and whispery, like an actual disembodied being.
Me and my family do know of the movie, especially because we liked comedy or family movies with Eddie Murphy in it, and some good old classics as well. Even though many haven't seen the original 2003 movie, it is WAY much better than this!
I just saw this the other week ago with my family at an AMC. The acting was so unfunny, the one-liners absolutely atrocious, and the CGI cringe. This wouldn't appeal to adults or children. They tried to be so deep with the emotional issues, most of the characters are very quirky and uninteresting, I only liked Danny Devito in the entire film. I'm disappointed to have even gone to see this, it just felt like a quick cash grab, I'm bummed by this movie and certainly by Disney as a whole. We would've just been left better off with the original 2003 Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy.
@@pumpkinpatch5 The ride at Disney World is amazing, we live here so we go every time, it’s actually my favorite ride at that amusement park, I just think the newer movie adaptation doesn’t have the same feel, the old one is good even though most haven’t heard of it.
Why do you get suckered in by Disney when you know that all they produce is crap? Did you actually think you were going to invest time and money and watch a good movie as a result?
@@sjdrifter72I was invited to go with family so I didn't spend any money or even planned to go in the first place, but I did and I sat there cringing the entire way through lol. The kids enjoyed it I think, I'm not sure because I doubt any of them understand the awful humor.
I actually love the 2003 haunted mansion. The writers actually loved the haunted mansion ride since they made sure the movie incorporated the ride's lore and history. And the writets at least tried to make the plot seem more believable. Even if some of the events break some plot points. Like the Villian, somehow knowing the Main Character's wife was a recarnation of his master's past lover. We never get the answer on how he figured it out. But at least the movie was entertaining and made me emotional. Whether it scared me shitless due to the tomb scene with the zombies and spiders, to making me joyful seeing the graveyard scene with all the ghost partying. The characters of the 2003 film I feel are 10× better than the 2023 cast. Give and take the og film cast portrayed the generic family structure you see in 2000s films, but at least the characters had substance. The family had character development and felt like they generally cared for each other. It's just a fun family movie that at least tried versus this unemotional crash grab.
Did you posses me after I saw this movie this past weekend? Your thoughts were my thoughts. Great Review. The trailer made this look so fun, I wanted it to be better than the lackluster EM film. Sadly it was not.
I think the one way to improve the overwell plot atleast in the line of the ghosts, that the main ghost commends an horde of loyal spectical hounds that enchain and drag the ghost to the lower levels of the mansion, that way each ghost has atleast a reason to work for the main ghost, second the the lady who owns the house should work as an caretaker, she should say "look dont mess or tourch anything as it would make the house an mess" that way she can keep the main guy safe from any paranoire without the whole "leave this place, oh and here an hundred quid" second each character should at least contribute something to the group, and finnaly have it reveal the main head ghost murder there wife or dughter and hired the mediam to keep em quiet, that way it would explain why the medium is there, and finnaly have the plot inside the mansion as having them leave removes the whole danger, make it sort of an countdown to 12 well the ghost powers grow more violent as time goes on. and boom made the plot better.
Bro a just recently started watching your videos and I really like your reviews. So sad I didnt find your channel before what happened to your deleted content, because I already watched the rest of the videos and now I have to wait for the next one😭
The real tragedy about this movie is that it's exactly the kind of movie that Disney *should* have been remaking all along. Boring, bland, and bad movies that were flops and never even became cult classics after the fact. It's the perfect breeding ground for a revamp. Unfortunately, rather than redo the movie again but have it well written, well, you've already described why even the characters aren't worth rooting for.
What’s the problem with that? Is it because we don’t see him doing that stuff or because he’s too silly to be that? This isn’t sarcasm I’m genuinely curious by why you find that funny
@@willpower8289 I find it hilarious because Disney cannot ever be taken seriously, he can’t just be a paranormal investigator or a guide, he’s an Astrophysicist
@@haitch2676 Well to be fair it’s not like paranormal investigators or useful anyway. And yea a guide seems to be more fitting but I can see where you’re coming from with this.
Honestly, I thought the movie was quite a fun film. It at least made me jump out of my chair and made me giggle...while there are some flaws with it, I think the characters...the build up of the mansion and the 1st act were pretty decent. Its nothing ground breaking BUT It is a fun Halloween movie to watch. If only WAS released on September or October....
Yeah I feel bad looking up reviews of movies I like to see if people think it sucks and they always do, then I ruin it for myself. Ima just take that this was a fun Halloween movie.
The writers for this generation are butchering shows and movies. It’s the worst. We need to reach out to the people on RU-vid who make banger short films with clever writing and phenomenal actors and stop relying on big box office releases for entertainment. Indie films have an opportunity to shine if we boost them properly.
Wait you're telling me a mediocre movie from 2003 starring Eddie Murphy didn't do well when we made 20 years later by old movie stars no one really cares about without the IPs that made them famous? I'm shocked! They legitimately expect me to believe these people went to the police with 'skeleton with a top hat' and not only got a perfect rendition of what the man saw hair included but they were able to add flesh to that drawing and get an exact picture of the guy's face? Hollywood knows Bones was a show right? And even that was a bit science fiction. We all know it takes a long time to add flesh to a skeleton. That's just bullshit. That is experience destroying bullshit. Not that I was into the experience to begin with.
I’ve never even realized there was a REMAKE! And a remake of an already-good movie, might I even deign to add. Y’know what, leave the remakes to videogames & the classics to movies, because that’s what I’d rather prefer!
they identify the ghost by - having a sketch artist draw the ghost and then draw skin on it to figure out who the person is???...???... if I was drinking milk, I'd spew it out my nose. what further proof do you need that movies are just becoming more and more brain dead...
It's not about making a good movie you'll be proud of, and which will resonate with viewers through the years. It's about putting as many "disenfranchised minorities" on the payroll as possible, and bleeding whatever corporate entity is stupid enough to employ them into an early grave. 🤷♂️
I watched the movie just yesterday and I wanted the movie to be over as soon as it started. I was forced to see this mess of a movie because my grandma wanted to see it but I already knew that this was made by modern Disney so I knew already this movie was going to be a failure.
