I recently downloaded Scarlet Fire and listened to it for the first time. It sounded so much better than I remembered because every time I hear it is on this channel and it is always being played through dying earbuds.
I really like the shrieking ring modulated sound lol. The way the modulator frequency is really low during the sustained bits and how it spikes during the upward glides is fun
fun fact: when "comparing" hd600 vs hd600 my ears were so much waiting for something to change in the audio man, at this point it's like they recognize the song and just expect for the sound to be different in every possible way...
I'm so conditioned for there to be a change that my brain started lying to me and going "Nah nah you can hear the difference mate" every time the camera zoomed in...
its a phenomenally important point in every artist's career when they have developed a style so distinct, that they themselves are finally able to make a joke out of it with the audience. Thanks mate! Keep it up.
Because of the videos on this channel, I decided to upgrade my headphones from Arctis 3 to a pair of Senny HD 599. I was hot swapping between the pair with “Walk Through the Park” playing and the difference was almost eye-watering. I had never heard anything sound like that before, I dropped an “oh my God” for how stunned I was. Thanks for directing me into openbacks, Dank. Add-On: for those wondering, they sound amazing. Copped mine for 115 USD and they are stunning to see, brown velour ear pads and headrest with a cream-coloured housing for the electronics.
Pretty good choice, but if you want to get blown away, check out the HD 560S. Yes, the number is lower. And they’re not all that bassy. But man those things are microscopes for music. That was the first time I really noticed there was a difference between high quality Spotify and Apple Lossless. Love them with my BTR5.
Should try the HD600/6XX next, there's a reason Wade uses them for his benchmarks and they've been legendary for a good reason. If the 599s blew your mind, 600s are even better in detail retrieval.
@@jacobrzeszewski6527 The 560s are so damn flat and analytical that they make for great mixing headphones as well. with a good source these really are a hidden gem
One of the OG units of Hifiman HE-6 was measured at sensitivity of 77db. At the time they required a speaker amp, because there were no good enough headphone amps.
Also, quick note, HD600 are 103dB/v. They were rated 97dB/mW when that unit was more common, but now, with most headphones being rated by voltage rather than power. So, going by voltage, their sensitivity is 103. (The Sennheiser website says 97db/v, but this is thought to be an error where someone may have updated the unit but not the number. Third-party measurments also come to around 103dB/v)
"This is what they were hearing in the studio, this is how it sounded:" Nah m8, they may have used those headphones to check the mix, but music is and always was primarily mixed on speakers.
Best way to think of how ohms and sensitivity works electrically is this: ohms is driven by voltage, sensitivity is driven by current. A headphone doesn't just need the raw numbers in terms of power, how that power is applied (whether through higher voltage or higher current) also matters.
@3:38 the HD600 compared to itself made me realise for the first time that those are NOT how my own headphones sound, so I decided to compare your HD600 recording to the original track played through my headphones. I think in the future you could also include an original snippet of the track for comparison, against the HD600 and the audiences' own headphones :)
I can confirm, although I use some misodiko mesh pads so that changed the sound of it just a little bit. I have a feeling that its the recording of the measurement machines he uses that might cause the diff in sound
This is a hilarious video to me, cause I usually listen to your videos with my roomies on either my phone speaker or a Bluetooth speaker, but today I not only finally watched your video on my main computer, but also on my new headphones (Skullcandy SLYR Pro series cause I had a coupon). So I FINALLY got to truly hear the subtle differences in the headphone comparison portions! Absolutely blew my damn mind and got me cackling so loud I spooked my cat.
I've been so conditioned to hear a difference when comparing headphones with "that song" that I could have sworn the HD600s sounded brighter than the HD600s. Cheers mate!
drum museum could bring about Dank's ascension from portable to proper audio room with dedicated AMP used for nothing but glorious analogue, maybe even wood or at least faux wood pannels. good stuff ahead i recon.
I have a set of the K340s, damn they sound good on a tube amp. Also, the K340s have like 3 or so different versions. Bass neutral, bass heavy, and I believe there is a base lite version. You will have to look under the grill to see what color the drivers are. They will tell you which version you have. Gray is heavy, black/red are neutral, and green is lite.
I recently got a K340 for myself used for 112 bucks. Thanks for your recommendation Wade! I do have enough power to juice this monster (Topping DX3 Pro+, great headphone amp+dac!), they sound just heavenly!
This will sound insane but since 2012 I have bought 6 K340 phones, 2 1st gen K240 and 4 white passive K240(2 had the orange rings). Once you get that heavy or neutral K340 its unreal how good it is compared to most modern cans. I just got a set of LCD-2 early model ordered so Ill see how modern hifi cans sound. BTW im using a little dot MK3 with Yugo front tubes in the living room and a old Yamaha A32 in my backroom(mainly cuz its where my big speakers are at) and that Yamaha has surprised me for the power hungry cans. Its true they really need power from a speaker amp or a high end headphone amp. Anyway I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I gave 2 of my 240s to friends and its been their daily drivers for years.
if you wanna know mr dank - ohms are used as a measurement unit for electric resistance. it measures how hard it takes for current to pass through - the more ohms the harder for the electrons to pass.
You can get a bit more power out of the balanced output. I'm not sure if you can fit balanced cables for the AKG K340, but if you can, you might be able to use your DAP with them on batteries only
I have a very rare pair of planar magnetic headphones that are hand built by some electrical engineer man. They're 11 ohms only... but they need a proper high power desktop amplifier that can push out anywhere from 3-7 volts to drive properly. The headphones are called the Nectar Bee They also have the thickest planar driver ever made since they're custom and it's attached quite loosely specifically to move large amounts of air for bass. They stay completely flat with the bass until about 16-17 Hz. They go down all the way to 5Hz with a roll off. It's crazy, even when you take the headphones off your head, you can still audibly hear the bass these things can produce.
Speaking of home desktop headphone amps, I'd love to see you do a video on those. I use a HiFiman EF2A and the fact that it uses vacuum tubes always fascinates me.
Guitar amps still often use vacuum tubes too. They're preferred for guitar because they'll start to clip the signal beyond a certain volume, giving you an overdriven sound.
yeah, despite solid state amplification being technically superior in many ways, some people still cling to tube amplification, especially guitarists. it's supposedly because tubes clip the signal in a fundamentally different way from transistors, producing more even harmonics that sound "sweeter". but you only hear that effect if the signal is pushed so hard that it clips and distorts, and for a listening situation that's not what you're looking for
It's always interesting to me to sort through which of each headphone I like better when you do these comparisons, cause I learn more and more about what I want when I finally get some more overears. So far I'm down to "balanced mids, slightly boosted bass, and for God's sake no super bright and tinny uppers!" Probably comes from having played drums in band and knowing what the cymbals are supposed to sound like. They're suprisingly low in tone, at least the ones my school had, the high pitched tss was more of a highlight than the main sound. And that's all I get from the HurrDurr600s.
I’ve rewatched these videos tons of times but this is the first time I’ve noticed every time he shows the HD600s against another headphone. There is no cord plugged into the HD 600s since it’s testing other headphone and the tone doesn’t change since it’s all done in post. Cool!
I've gotta hand it to DankPods, dude is just making videos about a passion for audio and he's gotten me into it as well. I'm now listening to lossless quality music out of my Fiio M11 Plus ESS with my Moondrop Blessing 2 Dusks with a balanced cable, and I'm now looking into getting some DT990 Pros, possibly custom made by Custom Cans Thank you mate
Wade, I'd love to send you an amp or dac/amp from Mayflower Electronics - they're local to me in Upstate NY and they're assembled in CT (or at least the Arc Mini is), so it's keeping things small and local like the Grados. (Plus, I just dig the fact that a relatively well regarded boutique manufacturer decided to stick around here of all places.)
I hope somebody else has realized this sooner than I have, but I've only just realized that the correlation between "stink" and "power consumption" allows the use of other colloquialisms for greater punnage. Example: beans. With a really stinky pair of headphones, you really gotta give it the beans.
Thank fucking god. Anecdotally I've known for a long time that ohms don't seem to correlate to output volume, but this is the first time I've had that semi-confirmed.
Lol Frank really does have it good. I have my own snake Serendipity, and since my second snake died last year after getting sick, I had twice as many hides and water dishes. So I decided to give them all to her lol but how did I fit them all in? Easy. Using substrate to pile on top of her larger hides, I create a flat surface for another hide and BOOM she now has a condo. And even better, she has dual level hides on both the warm and cool side of her enclosure. Has she used the top levels yet? Nope. But I'm sure she'll find them eventually
If you want to compare stink mathematically, use this equation: *_Volume = 10⁽ˢᵉⁿˢᶦᵗᶦᵛᶦᵗʸ/²⁰⁾ / ohms_* Using the properties of BODE diagrams (mathematics term for frequency response graps)
IDK man, coming outta my bargain bin Dell speakers that came with my big box computer in 2006, they all sound the same. Love your shit, keep being amazing!
I fuckin died the whole time the huh duhs were on screen during the "comparison". Audiophile comedy is something I will always need in my life. Thank you Wade
It is not in fact only you that uses the term stinky. I have used it since I started watching your videos. You are well on the way to adding a new meaning to the word stinky to the OED.
Fun fact about the Easy-To-Run Headphones: They can sound rather noisy on certain devices, such as laptops, since the minimum power that can be output is rather high, resulting in it having limited dynamic range (and hence, noise). I was able to reduce the noise and improve the sound quality by putting a variable resistor in series, which also functioned as an old-fashioned volume knob.
They sell 80 ohm barrels you can plug at the end of the jack that accomplishes this, raising the noise floor so the electrical noise isn't so prevalent while still allowing the sensitive headphone to run off a dongle / laptop. Amazon has them under "Impedance Adapter" for around $8USD
The craziest thing I've already taken away from this video is that the Audeze LCD 2's came out in 2009. I always thought they were some weirdo late 70's thing.
Ohms is the resistance to power going through the headphones. Sensitivity is the rating of volume, for a standard signal. You want a higher sensitivity, this is sometimes sacrificed for balancing the frequency spectrum balance. For anyone curious.
This brings up my preferences...I absolutely adore Audio Technica's ATH-M50X over-ear headphones...they can be driven by a phone or portable CD player fairly easily...but I own a Schiit Audio Asgard 2 headphone amp...class A power up to 1 watt!! The way the amp lights up the audio from the ATH-M50X's is INSANE! Quality power with headroom makes an incredibly nice change to the music. Sure I could drive damn near any pair of headphones with the Asgard 2...it really does have a noticable and healthy impact.
After watching this channel for a long time, I just took delivery of my first real set of headphones, and it's the HD 600. I am enjoying it a lot. Thanks for indirectly influencing my decision by always using the HD 600 as the referee headphones. :)
I'm no audiophile, but does this make sense? Whatever volume setting you put on your amp is the voltage level, and whatever ohm rating you plug into that determines the power (P=V^2/R), and the sensitivity is how much power per 'sound' you need.
I have to admit, you and this channel are the reason why I got my own Fiio mini amp for my desktop and got brand new Senny 58X headphones. Turning me into a proper audiophile!
I left this video knowing one thing: the HD600s sound the best, at least through my headphones. A nice amount of bass without losing out on the high end, and the highs don't sound sharp or abrasive either.
Thanks to DankPods i got my first set of audiophile headphones and listening to one of his videos with them after listening to countless RU-vidrs... you can tell this man put time and effort into mixing his audio to be prestine. that's why he is always apologizing for iPhone audio when its literally recorded with just that. at first i didn't care but now... i care a lot. thank you Mr Dank.
This man has this setup perfect .. plays the same song ...forever ... So his fans can actually develop an ear for the differences between each driver ... So glad I've been hear...mmhm ear .. lol for each development in this channel
Makes sense the Ohms would be all over the place since it’s a measurement of resistance. Definitely only a piece of the math for what these headphones want.
