The Hidden History of Shuai Jiao is a multi-part series that will present the history of modern Chinese Shuai Jiao, examining the commonly spread history to separate fact from fiction through the lens of evidence, history, and logic.
Kungfu Explained #09 - The Hidden History of Shuai Jiao - Addendum
In this special addendum episode of the Hidden History of Shuai Jiao, I am joined by my friend and fellow wrestler, Emanuele Papa and we take a look at a video featuring Li Baoru, who is a legend and authority on Shuai Jiao, a practitioner who studied under the fist generation practitioners during the Republican Era. Li Baoru was immensely responsible for the continuation and transmission of Shuai Jiao in China. In his video, he is discussing the Mongol origins of Chinese Shuai Jiao and how things were with the older generations, highlighting the art's Mongol origins and influence.

Master Chang created Tai Chi forms with all the basic Shuai Jiao throws and locks incorporated in them, still warm up this way it is excellent calisthenics.

Context is everything. History is important. Understanding what a non-Han tradition meant to Han Chinese in the Republic period is important to understand. Also, as 99% do not have any "horse in the game' so to speak there is no reason we should not deal with just facts. Li is an astounding resource... he is also important to modern sanshou/san da!

Excellent chat and even got a Dodgeball reference in there 😅 I wondered if you may know if there was somewhere where you could source the artwork of the Shan Pu Ying? (By that I mean a copy of not the real thing, I'm definitely not rich!! 😅) Its really cool and something I'd love to have a copy of.

Excellent video! The only slight point of disagreement I had was with the part about modern athletes totally stomping earlier generations. I think that we have to be very reserved with the claims because the context is frequently completely different especially when rules change over the course of the history of the sport. Saying that the modern athlete would win outright would be like saying a gold medal athlete in judo could come in and easily be number 1 in shuai jiao. Small changes to the rules or equipment make a big difference and even though the top athletes of today can sometimes transition into sports if the context is similar enough this is not always the case. The longer that a specific ruleset remains unchanged then the higher the skill ceiling rises because it has adapted to that sport. Though conversely you if the ruleset has been unchanged for a really long time, then the best innovations have probably already been found. Modern athletes also would necessarily win because those in the past did not know how to eat or train properly. In many ways the diets and regimens of older famous athletes actually align with what we know about exercise science in the modern day. Anyway, this is a whole large discussion which is too long for a comment. But I appreciated the video and look forward to future content!

Thanks man. Yeah, we were mostly referring to today's sj guys against older generation sj guys. So the comparison was mostly referring to within the same sport. Cross discipline had many other factors

Cool stuff. Always love to hear more about the various forms of wrestling of the world. At some point I'd love to know more about the differences between Bokh in...Mongolia, and Inner Mongolian Bokh. I know Inner Mongolia is part of China but the differences in dress at least seem pretty big. I get the sense there's some...painful politics and history at play, but I feel like we mostly hear about Bokh from Inner Mongolian groups these days and I've never seen a good overview of what happened and where rhe differences on Bokh arose beyond the base fact og political/national division.

There are differences in both rule and attire that go back s long time. The truth is that there were different types of wrestling, with different rules and clothing between the different mongol tribes since antiquity. Additionally, the Qing conquered some of the tribes which were incorporated into the empire and that is what eventually became inner Mongolia, while outer Mongolia was independent. Over time they each gravitated towards a specific rule set with attire which became the norm which is what you see today. There are actual exchanges where Mongolia wrestlers participate in inner Mongolian bokh, and vice versa at times. The differences in the styles at their root is not political per se, as I mentioned there were many different types of rule sets and attire between the various mongol tribes since antiquity, albeit they are all very similar at their base

You two might be interested to know that shuia jiao is part of the quan realization that created yiquan. Master Wang went around China and challenged many different systems. The essence of shuia jiao is in yiquan. Master Han xing Qiao was a Shuia jiao champion in Shanghai. The wrestling postures are in the system. The art became collision and neither striking nor wrestling but something new. The essence of the system? Natural. Natural body, natural speed, natural occurrence. And where does the system come from? The natural fist. Nature, Tao. To directly connect to the power of nature or Hun yuen li, the power cosmic is the goal! To drop away the blocks and to find the flow of Tao but not in a imaginative way, but in a very nuts and bolts pugilistic way, verifiable and probable, much like the Mongolian victory after some nature time. What if you realized nature inside yourself? You wouldn’t have to go seeking it externally would you?? Schools in China japan and Sacramento. Hsyq or Han shi yiquan

Are you going to do a similar series on what I have heard called LEI TAI FIGHTING on the raised platform with no barriers on the edges? Is that also from The Shan Pu Ying? Have you heard about the Hua Yuan Jia fella all the movies are made about in which he fights people from many different nations on the Leitai platforms? Is he also just Republican Era propaganda for Chinese Nationalism?
