This particular lady, the Duchess of Devonshire, was a famous figure in British society in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She was known for her beauty, fashion sense, and her stormy personal life. Born in 1757, she was born into the Spencer family but would marry the Duke of Devonshire in 1774 and became a leading figure in London society.

The Duchess was such a great movie

Yes! But I see some difference between movie and the book. In movie, Duke was practically a devil ( casting Ralph Phiennes also helps), while in book he was just typicla man of his time. On the other hand, lady Foster was a real villain, a tramp exploiting Georgina s kindness

A sad life for such a vibrant and beautiful woman, there's nothing worse than being ignored by a husband who you really love and care about but she rose above all that and carried on regardless. Thank you for the interesting content I was almost in tears.

I was so thrilled to find out I was a Spencer because of Georgiana, and Diana of course. So wonderful to know I share DNA with them. ❤ Oddly enough, I’m also related to Charles Grey, so I’m doubly related to their daughter.

A very insightful video...she so reminded one of Diana in that in her time she did what she was directed to do ...then had to deal with all the fallout from it... maybe in not so conventional ways and means...but to her and in her time I'm sure she felt she was doing the best she could with the hand she was dealt.

Very interesting. I read the book and saw the movie, but still learned more from this excellent video. I think that story of her having to give up her illegitimate baby girl is heartbreaking. Diana Spencer was descended from Georgianna's brother George. So Georgianna was her great x5 aunt! Thank you very much. Oh! I just learned that Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice are descendents of Eliza, Georgianna's daughter by Earl Grey!

A comment on Georgiana being a fashion icon. We often call a ladys large brimmed hat a "picture hat". This name is due to the Gainsborough portrait which appears several times in your video. She is wearing a large brimmed and ribboned black hat. When this portrait was first exhibited it caused a furore amongst the fashionable ladies who all rushed off to their milliners to order " a hat like the one in the picture".

"The Duchess" was a great movie. Similar to Anne Boleyn, it was a travesty to her husband that they couldnt produce a male heir although finally they did. She was a relative of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Her life may not have been perfect (whose life is?) but she was about a zillion times better off than the working class peasants at the time, whose days were spent beavering away to make the life of Georgiana (and those of her class) easy and comfortable - cooking, cleaning, washing laundry, emptying chamber pots, etc. These people - whose labours built Britain - are totally forgotten to history, while we fawn over sentimental memories of dukes and duchesses. Also, you pronounce her name “Jor-JAY-ner” but I believe it was only pronounced like this after her marriage, because of the Cavendish family’s “Devonshire drawl” - an affected way of speaking adopted by the Duke of Devonshire and his associates, which led to names being mispronounced. I think her own family originally pronounced her name in the conventional way - ie, “Jor-jee-AR-na”.
