Caroline Matilda was a British princess, the youngest daughter of King George II of Great Britain and Queen Caroline of Ansbach. She was born in 1751 and was well-educated and fluent in several languages.
In 1766, Caroline Matilda married Christian VII, the King of Denmark and Norway. The marriage was arranged to strengthen the alliance between Denmark and Great Britain but was unhappy and tumultuous. Caroline Matilda and Christian VII had a son, the future King Frederick VI of Denmark, but they spent much of their marriage apart.
Caroline Matilda became involved in a scandal when she began an affair with Johann Friedrich Struensee, a German doctor and advisor to the king. Struensee became unpopular with the Danish nobility and was arrested, tried, and executed for high treason in 1772. Caroline Matilda was also arrested and imprisoned, but she was released and exiled to Celle, Germany, where she died in 1775 at 24.
