Tank treads being damaged is not a knockout because the crews are able to repair them during the match (if you'll recall, the student council was able to do that with the 38(t) in the practice match against St. Gloriana, and poor Jagdpanther-chan in the final battle has to do this twice). Only things that would render a tank completely inoperable and/or irreparable on the field, such as a penetration that would kill the crew or destroy the engine, constitute a knockout. Sure, the Type 89 wouldn't be going for much longer, but the point is that it was able to keep moving, even if just for a few seconds, while the simultaneous hit on the other flag tank was an instakill. Pretty much the same situation for the Panzer IV in the final match: it only lost its ability to move, not its ability to fight. And before you point out that the M3 Lee in the very first practice match was considered knocked out after it snapped a track: the inexperienced team not only snapped the track, they also wrecked the engine in the process. The consistent understaffing of Oarai's tanks was likely done for two reasons: 1. to further emphasize Oarai's underdog status, as they can't even fully man the tanks they can manage to get their hands on, and 2. the show's character list is already incredibly bloated due to the premise, they probably don't want to add any that aren't strictly necessary. In any other show, most of these tank crews would be one character, but because they need to fill out the crews of so many tanks, they just have to bite the bullet and split them into 3-6 each and effectively treat the crews as one character anyways, with some token things differentiating the individual members on the rare occasions that we zoom in. The history buffs would have been just Erwin, the first years probably would've just been Azusa, the gamers would have just been Nekonyaa, etc. As for how Oarai deals with the understaffing: most times, the commander pulls double duty as radio operator and gunners often double as loaders, whichever is necessary. The gamers are even seen working out in the movie, probably to overcome how much more difficult it is to get stuff done with 3 people in a 5-man tank.

i like to imagine that the reason there are just scrapped tanks around is that the weird aircraft carrier thing used to be a large training field or stadium for Tankery and these are just. all the tanks that were deemed not worth recovering all that time back. just a personal theory of mine.

The sad thing about this is that this show is more historically accurate than many history movies. As to the speed being too fast or the fights being unrealistic, I do not mind. I just enjoy the tanks.

The reason why they didn't show the Italian battle was because there were some problems between the studio and VA'd during this time and the anime was on hold for a year or two. Before they resolved it and started it and decided to skip the Italian battle, but they made an OVA later to compensate.

I like to believe that the tanks are recreations with modern materials, making them lighter and more durable than the original ones, which is why they are faster than they should be, and can shake off hits that would destroy the original tanks they're based on.

One thing to note is that the huge viewing screen used for the tournaments seems to be built around a "Schwerer Gustav" railway gun. Not too sure about what that implies, but it's just interesting. Edit: Something you forgot to mention is that the Panzer IV H also technically had a different gun from the F2/F late or whatever some other people call it.

I dont remember which episode it is but Miho states that there is a special linter on the inside of the tank that the shells cant pen, thus allowing for the crew to remain unharmed. Seeing as how you watched it under the English dub and didnt notice it means it probably isnt there but in the original Japanese audio (with subtitles) she does say it.

Was never mentioned but the giant screen that all the viewers watch is mounted on the railway car gun-mount Krupp K5, also known as the Krupp 28-cm-Kanone 5 (E) which as the name suggest would normal carry a 28cm cannon. Know there is toooons of cool stuff crammed into this though. So hard to mention everything. Great job overall.

I think the real reason why losing tracks isn’t always considered to be a “dead tank”. Is that way if your track was taken out and is clearly repairable, a lot of tanks would be disqualified once the tracks were out. So, that explains why they only considered a tank being “dead” only if it was deemed impossible for a tank to be mobile.

With the tracks thing, I think its probably something along the lines of "if the damage to the track can be fixed in field, or if the tank is otherwise still able to move, then its still in play" I would argue that both instances of the tanks still being in without tracks, the track could be remounted in field.
