He was captivated to traditional preppy style combined with old-fashioned grace. He drew influence from the individual styles of stars from the silver screen like Cary Grant and Fred Astaire.
Ralph attended Baruch College in Manhattan for two years after graduating from high school before discontinuing his studies after realizing that business wasn't his passion. Prior to starting his career in the design industry, Ralph Lauren served in the American Army for two years after being drafted in 1962. Ralph married Ricky Anne Loew-Beer and they had three children after he left the army in 1964. Lauren, who has a strong love for clothing, needed a job to support his passion, so he took a part-time job to do so.
Making garments he desired to wear was Ralph Lauren's primary motivation when he first started his profession. He made the decision to create apparel for himself because he didn't like the current men's fashion. By accepting a sales position at the Brooks Brothers in New York at the age of 24, he formally transformed his passion for fashion into a vocation. When Ralph launched his own line of ties for men in 1967, the Ralph Lauren Corporation was established. He attributes the ties' success to their distinction from other ties available at the time, calling them "broad and odd." Ralph sold his ties from a draw in the Empire State Building in New York City as well as from store to store. Ralph increased his interest and developed a clothing line as his fame expanded. He established the brand Polo, which offered more than just apparel.

In reality, Ralph Lauren began in the menswear industry and introduced his first customized shirts for women in 1971 along with his now-famous Polo player logo. In the same year, he also built a shop on Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive. His iconic cotton Polo shorts were introduced in 1972, and in March 1978, Bloomingdale's carried his line of scents for the first time. In 1986, he opened his main store in New York City at Madison Avenue and 72nd Street.
