I saw a meme saying "you're here because your father wasn't queer". My father WAS queer. And a wonderful man. I lost him last year. Shut the front door, as OT says. EDIT: holy carp, this blew up! wow. to everyone asking: yes, i am fine. I'm actually glad he's not dealing with it anymore, COPD is a bitch and a half. Being born in 1952 he never had the words for it, but based on our many many many (drunk and sober) conversations, most likely some flavor of pansexual. "if we get along, gender doesn't matter. men can be pretty too" and secretly watching gay porn after I taught him how computers work :D I wonder just how many closeted people were in that town... especially under communism. If I had been around before 1989, they would've destroyed me because I can not shut up :D

But once I got out of school and did some research into different sexualities for a book I was writing, I found a label that I just liked and that was when I realized I was queer lol It also doesn’t help my situation that I met the girl I’ve been thinking about twice about 2 or 3 years ago and just suddenly realized how pretty she’s always been and that she’s STILL so pretty as a full grown woman. Before I moved to another state, I tried to send her a friend request so I could at least say hi her every once in a while. We used to be friends in school, not close, but she was on of the few popular pretty girls that was nice to me and was patient with my ADHD/autistic weirdness. @@GothboiKenzy yes straight people can be in media, does your smooth brain feel so good for knowing that? The problem was, they would smash together the most problematic couples like a toddler does when playing with toy cars and trying o simulate an accident because little child brain think its the funniest thing in the world. The hetero relationships that were crammed down my throat as a kid 9 out of 10 were toxic and problematic as HELL, but because it was a hot guy and hot girl it was supposed be a good couple. They never had anything in common, always argued, always played mind games, never trusted or communicated with each other, and where portrayed as “hashtag couple goals” the entire time. And no kid’s shows ever showed any alternative to cis and straight. No lesbians, no gays, no gender queer characters, not even any happily single people. EVERYONE had to have a partner (or at least a love interest) of the opposite gender by the time the story wrapped up. I read a book were a girl fell in love with a American Civil War GHOST and ended up SETTLING for a living guy ONLY because she helped the ghost move on to the after life. And it was set up to be a “feel good love story.” There were books girls HATED this one boy for no reason other than “he’s annoying” (which he wasn’t, he was just politely friendly) but she ends up in love wit( him by the end because he shows her he’s a “good guy” ONCE and all of a sudden he’s God’s gift to the world. And those stories involved MIDDLE SCHOOLERS! So yes, cishet WAS crammed down my throat as a child by children’s media. The ONLY time I saw trans gender or gay/lesbian characters was on freaking LAW AND ORDER because my mom watched it while I did my homework.

Jamie, thanks for this video. My son has been socially transitioning for a couple of years and is starting the process of seeking medical intervention now. He's still underage, but fortunately we live in a state where parents are still allowed to raise their own kids. I think of myself as pretty knowledgeable about trans issues and we are super supportive of my son, but even though I know the regret rates for transition and how much happier and healthier trans people are when they are free to seek affirming care, we (his cis parents) still feel some anxiety about him starting medical transition. We're more concerned about it not going smoothly than about him regretting it later, and about the risks inherent in any medical treatment. Having just had surgery on my back a month ago myself, I don't want my baby boy to have to go through the pain of recovering from top surgery. Especially -- and this is where I confess my sins -- if there's a chance he might not "need" it. He could just keep wearing binders forever, right? Yeah, I know better than that. But my Mom brain looks at the options for medical transition and focuses on the risks, the dangers, the things that can't be reversed. Even though I know the stats, when it comes to my own child, it feels a lot scarier. The only think I can think of that's more frightening than him medically transitioning...is what might happen if he doesn't. This video helps me envision a real person on the end of that road. Seeing you address this issue at this moment in my life is a great reminder that the medical interventions are a process, but that they are a moment in time with lasting, positive, life-changing effects. I want that for my son, and this video is going in my playlist of videos that I send to friends and family who want to better understand my son's identity and transition. Thank you so much. You're doing such good work.

I am with you on that, I have 2 sons that are socially living as the boys they are my oldest son has started his testosterone treatment, my youngest is too young still (14) when they stopped living as girls and became the boys they knew they were they also became happy and confident. We renamed them, yes they got to be part of the process, but seeing as when a child is born parents name thier kids it was the same concept! So far they have been fine, but my youngest who guess to high school has the group that calls him all kinds of things, they also flip out because he has a boyfriend who is adorable and has been so good to my baby for 3 years now. Truly having these types of shows where they can watch people making fun of the dumb assumptions from hate-filled fascist makes them more able to laugh it off as well.

Honestly, the worst part about transitioning is the fact that most people who want to transition figure it out after they've already gone through puberty when it is far less optimal, and it's difficult to be confident that someone who is young enough to truly benefit from HRT during puberty will not regret their decision. Like, teenagers are already a pretty fickle bunch and pre-teens are more so and easily influenced, so it's difficult to know if you're doing the right thing for them by enabling their transition that early. If your child knows that their gender is not the same as their sex and they're dead set on remedying that, then your support is THE most meaningful thing you can give them. Even if you have some misgivings about surgery, that's fine. You guys can work through that together. Just knowing that you're there for them and you're willing to help them start that journey means the world to them. Also, top surgery is far easier to recover from compared to bottom surgery. Still, it's best to wait and see how much it is actually needed once the hormone replacement hits and there isn't a hormonal impetus to enlarge or sustain breasts. A lot of trans men experience considerable breast size shrinkage before undergoing their top surgery, particularly if they start it early because estrogen blockers are also a crucial factor for FTM HRT. While top surgery will still likely be necessary, the severity may not be as great as it could have been if HRT had been further delayed. Also, try to get a cosmetic surgeon for the process. The way they close wounds is fundamentally aimed at reducing and eliminating scarring. Unfortunately, this will mean a more significantly restricted range of motion during the recovery process because the sutures won't go through all of the layers of skin, it will result in less noticeable scarring once it has healed fully. With cosmetic surgeons, the ideal is to have multiple sub-cutaneous layers of sutures with biodegradable thread finished with surgical adhesive (basically what cyanoacrylate adhesives developed into) and adhesive-based wound closure dressings (similar to steri-strips) to add extra strength to the closure. Long story short: You're doing the right thing and you're a good mother. Your concerns are valid, your anxiety is valid. Talk through them with your son so both of you will be on the same page and you can work through them together.

@@mndlessdrwer Thanks for the kind words and for spitting straight-up facts! As an update, I no longer live in a state that allows parents to raise their own kids. I didn't move, but my state legislature held a special closed-door session to pass a law that prevents minors from accessing gender-affirming care, including HRT, even with parental consent and the recommendation of their medical practitioners. I'm livid. Fortunately, we were already pursuing HRT for my son, and he was able to start treatment just weeks before the law went into effect, allowing him to continue treatment under the grandfather clause. I know other families who weren't ready to start that part of the transition yet and ended up moving states. We would have done so as well if we'd needed to, but I also have an 18 year old who is in his final year of high school, and since we were able to get my younger son the care he needs (at least for now), we thought it best not to disrupt their education. On a happier note, my son is doing fantastic on T, and his voice has dropped enough already that he sounds almost exactly like his older brother. He's so delighted. He was able to come out to his aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents on his dad's side of the family, and everyone is on board (even my ~80ish yo, Catholic parents-in-law!) and they are doing a commendable job of using my son's correct pronouns. (He doesn't plan to change his name, since the one we gave him is gender neutral and he likes it.) My sister-in-law even commented at Thanksgiving that my son seems so much more confident and outgoing now, and it's true. He's really bloomed since starting T, and I feel so fortunate that we were able to give him access to that. As for future surgeries, he has actually told me that he's looking forward to having top surgery scars. He says he doesn't want to go stealth, he's proud of his trans identity, and he would view surgical scars as a badge of honor. He's even talked about getting a post-surgery tattoo across his chest that says "these used to be t!ts," lol. Pretty sure he's not serious about that, but it's a funny idea.

If we can find some way to biologically paralyze someone from the waist down and fix it without causing harm, or any number of physical afflictions, we could theroetically use it to be more empathic. @Lillyluvsanime
@Lillyluvsanime Год назад
Hi. I'm Autistic and also work with kids. I think something like that could be an opening for discussion. A response like, "is that what equality means? That everyone looks the same or does things the same way?" Could open the conversation up to improve understanding. Depending on the age group, they may already know about the Civil rights movement somewhat so, you could follow up with, "when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was working for equality for Black people, did he want to change the world so that there was ONLY Black people, or did he want people to be treated the same and respected the same, and have access to the same things regardless of their skin color?" They'll most likely respond with, "he wanted people to be treated the same," because Black history is such a big part of our education (while disability education is sorely lacking), so you might follow up like, "well, this woman wants the same thing for disabled people that Dr. King wanted for people of color, to be respected and treated with kindness regardless of their disability. She doesn't want to be excluded or given, 'special treatment,' and she doesn't want to change everyone else to be disabled, she wants to be treated like a person and have access to the same things everyone else does. She just might need some help in order to do that."
@Lillyluvsanime
@Lillyluvsanime Год назад
@@evangonzalez7732 you don't necessarily need to sympathize with someone in order to empathize with them. This is where the dual empathy comes in: emotional empathy and cognitive empathy. Emotional empathy is feeling with someone and caring about the fact that they feel the way they do. Cognitive empathy is understanding WHY someone feels the way they do and putting value on it because it makes sense. I'm Autistic and I'm really strong in emotional empathy, but not so much with cognitive empathy. I don't often understand why something makes someone feel a certain way, unless it is something I have experience with, but I feel it with them and it matters to me if something is harming them. I also have a very strong sense of right/wrong and justice. All this to say, it's possible to care about how ableism affects people without having to experience a certain disability yourself. I have no experience with being a wheelchair user, but I do understand that it's not right that someone should be restricted in the places they have access to simply because they can't or struggle to walk.

I talked to my partner about this thing yesterday, "Why is it that the whole friend group is always gay?" or "why everyone is trans or gay now, it wasn't like that back then" or "why is everyone in the comments of a lgbtq youtuber suddenly realizing they're queer?" Here's the answer : No, it's not the lgbtq pheromones in the air omitting from them - it's simple human nature. Humans look for community. You look for people who have similar interests or you have similarities with, to feel belonging. A group of friends usually has one or multiple interests that bring them together or their personalities or opinions match in a way. It's always something connecting them. So: It's because being queer is a similarity between them, they feel that they belong together. Why isn't it weird that in a group of straight people no one wonders why all of them are straight? It WAS like that back then - It just wasn't allowed. Why would you openly admit to doing something that is illegal, or will get you hurt, abused or even killed. You would much rather stay quiet and have a chance to live a normal life. Because of community - A lot of people never get to actually learn about the lgbtq, many are closeted and stay closeted for a long time because they're not in a good environment or just assume everybody experiences what they do because they were never taught that there's more than straight or cis identities. They're not being brain washed, they're being taught. I learned spanish in school, I'm not turning spanish now. I learned geography, I'm not a mountain. I learned about politics though, and I've realized my position there, that I didn't know I had! I also tried some food and realized I didn't like it. You are learning, and now that lgbtq is more openly taught about, more people learn and realize things about themselves that they didn't know.

it's like i can sort of detect other people who have similar struggles. It's like every single closeted queer person is born with rocks in their shoes, and some have more, and some have less, but we all learn to adapt to it because it's just what's normal for us. Eventually we learn to walk upright, if possibly a little slower, and to someone who doesn't have rocks in their shoes we look like we're totally comfortable. But no matter how we hide our discomfort, our gait will always be slightly different from other people's, and since we're so familiar with how someone in pain walks, occasionally you'll see someone else who is also walking a little differently from everyone else. Your'e right, it's not bullshit pseudoscience about pheromones, it's that having this rock in your shoes and being closeted or not even knowing it comes with so many *tiny*, seemingly insignificant hallmarks of discomfort, that manifest in our behaviors as slightly different mannerisms. And I, someone who is familiar with little quirks in someone's behavior, will be drawn to certain people because we can relate to each other. Maybe we'll even talk about the rock-not explicitly, because we don't know there's a rock, but in conversations that sound like "hey, are your shoes hurting any less than usual today?" And we don't really want to talk about it or dig too deep, because we've learned from our childhoods that it's really weird and gross to talk about your feet hurting around other people. And we just secretly assume other people's feet also hurt all the time. One day, someone in your circle is going to have experienced so much foot pain that they'll mention the rock to someone who doesn't have a rock. And instead of being like "ew, why would you say that?" They respond "what? my feet don't hurt all the time, I didn't know yours did." Or "you know you can just...take the rock out, right?" And when that light bulb flickers on, of course they'll tell their friends about it. of course everyone will want to walk in rock-free shoes, and it will be really painful and some of them might not *ever* walk painlessly because of the sores and blisters and calluses from hundreds of thousands of sharp, stabbing steps. For some, the pain of removing the rock is intensely painful, or too expensive, or carries a high risk of injury and infection. Of course, there are going to be purists who say things like "people who take their shoes off and pick out the rocks are disgusting," or "you were born with it, so why do you want to mutilate your feet to take out something natural?" They call people silly for being in such excruciating pain that they k!ll themselves, because they can't empathize with others. And what they do not understand is that just because a person without rocks has no reason to remove any rocks does not mean that people with rocks don't deserve to do so.

I actually convinced someone to try and change their view! It was a japanese american man who was saying that being gay is wrong, and i asked him "why?" And he said "because they use being gay as an excuse to not have to deal with consequences" and i asked him what he was talking about and he said that when he was in school him and his friend would often get called very racist things and be bullied by this group of people who happened to be LGBT, and I said that thats horrible that something like that would happen, but if hes expirienced racism he should know how it feels to be hated for something someone else did, and as the smart man he is, he should know that even if that was horrible, just because it was someone doesnt mean it is everyone. He almost cried and said that he'll try to change his view, but it'll be difficult and I said that the fact he's giving it a shot is good enough for me. I was 12 at the time, this man was a 38 year old doctor. I changed the view of a full grown adult by just being kind. Around the 14:00 minute mark, Jamie mentions younger folks he knows being more tolerant & I just want to add as a parent to a soon-to-be-tween, I too am astonished by hoe accepting & open the kids are these days when it comes to members of the LGBT+ community! I do NOT live in the most progressive area of my state (though I live in the Northeast, so my state as a whole is rather progressive compared to the rest of the USA), but my kiddo has at least 1 transgender kid in her class, and no one batted an eye when they ended 1st grade as one gender & came back as a different gender for the start of 2nd grade. This year, one of their new teachers is non-binary and has asked to be called "Teacher XYZ" (vs Mr./Ms. XYZ), with they/them pronouns. In 3rd grade, when 'crushing' & 'dating' began, having boy/girl couplings & girl/girl couplings was totally fine. (Boy/boy still seems to be somewhat taboo, however). Kiddo's in 4th grade now, & the kids have already begun to explore identities such as bisexual, pansexual, queer, gay, lesbian...and sadly, while their peers are accepting, I'm told there are a number of girls who don't feel comfortable telling their moms/parents that they think they may be lesbian or bisexual, which just breaks my heart. I've made sure to let my kiddo know that attraction can fluctuate & how she feels now might change, and that doesn't mean she was 'wrong' before, and it also doesn't mean she's locked into one identity & she shouldn't ever be worried about it changing or letting people know it's changed (if she even feels it would be their business anyway). I've been told I'm a horrible parent, or that my kid has been Mo Less Ted (?!), because "6-7-8-9 year olds shouldn't even HAVE an idea about sex stuff!" & this baffles me so dang much. Like, don't most straight people know they are straight fairly young? Why is it all of a sudden a 'sex thing' if someone identifies as queer instead??! It doesn't make it any more 'sexual' than a 6 year old that knows they 'like' someone of the opposite gender? I just don't get it. I'm so glad that things seem to finally be headed in the right direction (ie., live & let live, dang it!), and that it was better for Jamie's generation than it was for mine, and even better for the newer crop of kids, but it also bums me out that we have such a long way yet to go. Won't it be nice some day in the future, when we no longer even HAVE to 'come out', because people are no longer just assumed to "straight until told otherwise"? Ah, a girl can dream...

My mom then took it upon herself to tell everyone she knew that I was Muslim and that the school system had brainwashed me into religion. I just didn't know anything about it and I wanted to be respectful to the girls in my class. My dad was pretty homophobic and transphobic until I came out. He has a gay brother, but my uncle is very much a narcissist and so for the longest time my dad's only close exposure to a gay person was a narcissist who built his entire personality around "my family hates me for being gay" when no, your family is meh about you because you're self-centred and purposefully made your divorce from your wife as messy as possible despite being the one who wanted it. Despite that being his personality, his now-husband is a man my whole family is fond of. But yeah, took until the kid whose idea of a good time is playing board games and whose entire personality is based around "what if we weren't bags of dicks to each other." for him to fully kick the homophobia.

12:49 When I was in elementary school and they’d give us stuff to colour however we wanted, I’d go through phases with how would colour them. I went through on phase in fourth grade where I would colour everything rainbow. (Normal, right? For a little kid to like colouring things rainbow?) and my parents didn’t see anything wrong with it. But at the end of the year they would display a bunch of our art in the hallways for a few days before we could take it home. One parent saw that I had a bunch of stuff coloured rainbow and got super pissed about how this catholic school was indoctrinating children into the lgbtq+. BRUH. It’s a fourth grader that colours stuff rainbow.

Somehow this unlocked a memory. So, when i was younger, i remember reading a book and they mentioned a gay couple. They weren't really relevant to the story and they were mentioned maybe two pages long. But at the end of the book, there was a comment from the author, justifying his decision to put a gay couple in there (he basically said that gay people are underrepresentated (especially in Kids books) and that its perfectly normal to have a gay couple in a story. Basically he responded to the argument "statistically there arent THAT many gay people in the World. Thats unrealistic!!" and said its stupid). And i distinctly remember that i was very confused why someone needed to clarify that. I didnt realise homophobia existed. And as a child, the homophobic stuff confused me way more than the queer stuff. They are just trying to find a "valid" reason to be homophobic, and thats not cool

I really needed this today. My transphobic coworker was particularly vile towards me this morning, insisted I wasn't trans, and went so far that I had a panic attack in line to get coffee before my shift. It's been over ten hours sense and I'm still shaking, crying off and on, and exhausted. This has just been one of many things he's done or said that made me uncomfortable or not felt safe to be around him. And the kicker is that he's a white cis gay man who does drag. Unless you're trans, you don't get to dictate what is or is not transphobic or who is and isn't trans. I'm still trans even if I have size H melons that I can't get removed or can't wear a binder. I'm still trans because I AM trans. Nobody else gets to decide that but me. I am trans enough just because I exist. This video made me laugh and it helped me have the will to actually eat. The whole situation this morning resulted in me not eating for over twelve hours and I'm hypoglycemic so it's not the smartest decision but....I feel like I'm rambling, sorry. Just thanks. Seriously.

Here's a piece of medical information I think all trans men should know: Cisgender men can have a condition known as gynecomastia. Literally a cis man growing breasts. It's actually a lot more common than people think, especially mild cases or if the man is overweight. It's a lot like the discourse around "what is a woman" where there's 0 way to define a woman that excludes trans women without also excluding some cis women. Saying men can't have breasts is also saying millions of cisgender men aren't men!

Just want to second the above comment(s) and hope you are doing better now. Im so sorry you had to go through that panic attacks are horrible (i have had so many) however just know most of the time it is a way of our bodies trying to defend ourselves when it think its in danger. Certainly doesnt detraft how horrible it is to go through tho. If i may, some things that help with anxiety/panic ive found has been using a paper bag to breath in to (so you get co2 to your brain and reduce the feeling of wanting to pass out) and if you get something hot or cold.... Cold tends to be better as more of a shock, like an ice cube or icepack and put it on the back of your neck/temple and try to focus on that, it really helps as it gives you something to even for a moment direct your brain to something other than what is going on internally, and can be enough to bring you out of it sometimes. these techniques are science based with how our brain works but obviously everyone is different but hopefully, if you find yourself in a similar situation in the future i really hope this helps x stay well and remember no one really knows anything except you and the only person who really know you is you. Also sorry for the long message.

It was an amazing experience to see how strong relationships work. My oldest child is correcting friends at school, when they claim that only heterosexual relationships are right.
