During the reign of Bloody Mary I, (the infamous Tudor monarch who sentenced hundreds of people to death to be burned at the stake) there were a number of Bishops who were targeted for execution. Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury was one of those burned alive, but a forgotten victim of the brutal Queen was Bishop John Hooper. Hooper was the Bishop of Worcester and Gloucester, but he was a key member of Edward VI's church. He had strong Protestant beliefs, and when Mary I came onto the throne, he was one of the first targets of her persecution.
Bishop John Hooper lost the title of being a Bishop, and was imprisoned inside of Fleet Prison. He was deemed a heretic after being held in prison for a long time, and he was then taken to Gloucester on a market day where he was burned at the stake. His execution did not go well, and it took three seperate first to execute him as the fire kept blowing out. He suffered for a long time, and it took 45 minutes for him to be killed.
