great episode, guys, i always look forward to Hudson Valley Squares episodes, and Doom metal is a passion of mine too, so i had to list my top 5 which were both easy yet difficult, but first kudos to Ryan for picking Black Hole's Land Of Mystery, i had the original copy once, but i gave it to my best friend, and even though i really like that album, i don't regret it as it was worth it as i gave to the most important person in my life, and also for mentioning Khanate, and i wasn't surprised either, and as to Mr Lazslo, the first Witchcraft album sound GREAT, out of time, or more specific as if it was recorded in ca 69-72

Massive props to Ryan for picking Black Hole's Land of Mystery. One of my all time favorite albums since I first heard it about 15 years ago. So unique they couldn't even pull it off a second time.

No Hooded Menace or Ahab? Jamie likes newer bands and these are 2 bands that you all would like. Try the new Hooded Menace-The Tritonus Bell as a starter and Ahab-The Call of the Wretched Seas for the more seasoned doom listener. Can't go wrong with either band, I think Pete might dig Hooded Menace.

My first time hearing Trouble was on the local Chicago metal radio station. Psychotic Reaction. That was it for me. I have loved that band and was fortunate to see them in small clubs a couple times, and I also saw Blackfinger open for Diamond Head. One of my all time favorite bands. Trouble and Manic Frustration are super high in my all time albums list, and I love all of the other albums, as well.

The guys that were at Maryland Deathfest just saw in current singer of Trouble perform. Kyle Thomas also the singer of Exhorder 🤘

One of my favs is a band from Maryland. EARTHRIDE ! If Black Sabbath and Motorhead had a baby it would be Earthride. Some of their albums are Something Wicked,Taming The Demons,Vampire Circus is their best. Great Band.

Good episode. takes me back to the early 2000s when I listened to a lot of doom. These days I can't seem to do very slow music, but I still love Trouble and other traditional doom bands especially. never heard Paul Chain mentioned on Sea of Tranquility, but he is worth checking out for both fans of doom and eccentric, kind of outsider music. Also an amazing lead guitarist -- almost makes me wish sometimes he'd have just joined another band to play wailing, mournful solos. Lots of great albums and compilations, but can be a difficult discography to navigate, and of course, really really hard to find.

My knowledge of doom metal is very weak, but there's still a couple of albums I'd like to mention: Týr - How Far to Asgaard. Viking themed heavy metal with doom elements. I get somewhat of a Sabbath vibe when I listen to this album (it's their debut). Gotta say I love the vocals as well. If you don't know Týr's music at all, I recommend listening to Wings of Time from the Ragnarok album. Phenomenal. Sublime. Masterpiece. Type O' Negative qualifies as doom as well in my book. Quite possibly because I remember my mom listening to it when I was a kid. Other than that I like some stuff I've heard from Cathedral, My Dying Bride, Candlemass and Paradise Lost, though I've never really listened much to their full albums.

Hi Guys. Great show. I am fairly new to Doom Metal. However, I have listened enough to form an opinion. You guys have taken 4 out of my 5 Picks. (Trouble, Witchfinder General, Pentagram and Pagan Alter/St Vitus/Cathedral. My number 1 However is Death Magic Doom by Candlemass. I love the guitar work on that album and Rob Lowe's singing is very good also. Faster paced Doom. I will give the other bands a listen. I am a fan of the Genre.

Windhand -Eternal Return deserves some recognition. Just crushing doom with Alice in Chains undertones and blindingly psychedelic guitar solos. Fucking love it.

Hi Guys. Thanks for this episode and pointing me to Doom....I'm not normally a metal fan as I really don't care for Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or any of the 80s wave. However, I like this doom metal, including Black Hole, Candlemass, Swallow The Sun, Paradise Lost and Witchcraft. I just heard some death vocals that I actually liked in a song where it made sense. What a revelation. Thanks again.

Shrinebuilder!! One of my favorite albums post 2000. Together with Sleep's The Sciences and Elder's Black Roots Stirring. Somewhat doom/stoner bands that were not mentioned: Acid King, Windhand, Goatsnake, Spaceslug. I'm more of a stoner than doom guy. I like some groove in my riffs. But i also had to grow into that. I only started to like the stoner bands when i was in my late 20's. When i was on festivals in my late teens i just walked right passed Kuyss and Spiritual Beggers. But i did always like Type O Negative and Black Sabbath.

Pentagram put out 2 compilations from the 1970's, "First Days Here", released in 2001 and First Days Here Too, released in 2006. Also, Pentagram put out an official newly recorded 7'' single with a B-Side in 1979, "Livin' In A Ram's Head/When The Screams Come" and then they changed their band name to Death Row in 1981, made some demos (which would be on their first LP) and played the new songs live until 1983 and then changed their name back to Pentagram in 1985 and released their self-titled LP.

Damn, how did you guys not mention Winter's 'Into Darkness' (1990)? Everything from the album cover to the sound that resembles early Celtic Frost, but slowed down to a sauropodean plod. Grimy guttural vocals. Fuck me what an album!

My favorite aside from all the usuals is Warning - Watching From A Distance, it’s a life changer. Beautiful clean almost folky lyrics with the most compelling and heart wrenching lyrics. A rare doom metal album about everyday life topics like love and loss. Another album that’s similarly depressing and real is Woods of Ypres - Green Album. Really earnest lyrics from David Gold, RIP.

I have to be strict and make sure I'm choosing stuff that isn't stoner or sludge (though there's always a bit of overlap).
