Very good information! After my back gave out and following surgery I definitely have many short comings. Then developed heart problems to boot. Guess I’m dang near useless these days😊.

After all the years in this trade, and at my present age (close to 20 years older than you), I can tell you that you get achier, and recovery time is way longer. I don´t want to quit, at least not for now, but I have been limiting my work.

I am a semiretired HVAC&R contractor having been on roofs at -20 and 100+ worked in very hot confined areas, loved my work. We moved south the furnace is in the attic in a very awkward spot if it breaks I’ll have to call someone to fix it as I’m 70 and can not access it safely. Why do codes let equipment be installed in inaccessible places ? 90%+ of them are in the attic in this area.

Zack, I need some advice, heres the situation, sorry for the book: Geo thermal system, 16 holes @ 500' deep. RTU by Innovent, Jetson chiller. VAVs in the ducts modulate the air volume all rooms have a SP of 72 degrees. Getting complaints of humidity issues from some of the rooms. Asked two of the contractors and the engineer who designed the system for clarification on CFM numbers. Some of these rooms have variables like: floor to ceiling glass wall on north side, one rooms shares 400 sq ft of unconditioned wall space of stairwell, one room is upstairs so naturally a bit warmer, one room has two big windows facing east. These are classrooms and as such are under the Dept of Education guidelines for temp allowances, the only thing the books say about humidity is "see DHS standards" which basically boils down to "less than 50% is ideal" but they have no firm line in the sand. Some rooms have been 57, 58% in the past few weeks, the rain we didnt get last year is definitely here now so sure, been humid. My worry is if inspectors get involved they tend to latch onto hard firm numbers. Like CFM. I mean, I get that with a VAV system you arent going to be feeling a steady steam of conditioned air circulating in the room, you get that light breeze sensation at times but its usually just a low steady hum. But just running the most basic of numbers, as in 1 CFM per sq ft of footprint, tells me one room should be at 550 CFM. Or thereabouts. I can see on the software this room is getting 275 CFM. Ive never seen the blueprints so I dont know what the specs say but isnt that quite low for a room that size? I only spent 5 years in the trade before moving to maintenance, old guy here on the doorstep of 60 (and yes shit hurts more, all the time) so I only know what I know. Ive worked in hospitals filled with VAVs and know that every single room was given a CFM value. Why would contractors and engineers be so reluctant to provide me these numbers? Weve already found some fishy shit with the install and programming so my take is all the vendors have been talking to each other behind our backs and nobody wants to release the numbers. Why, I do not know. My one thought is this building went up during Covid and costs went a million over projected, and decisions were made to start trimming things from the build, Im wondering if they didnt kabosh the Binford 3500 series for the cheaper Binford 2500. I dunno. Ive never been in a situation like this before and I just find everyones behavior highly suspect. I can guarantee that all 5 rooms come nowhere near close to the 1 CFM per sq ft formula so am I missing something here? Does a VAV deliver system drastically alter this formula? Thanks for any thoughts you or anyone else may have.

Preach it Zack. I live with cortisol problems for more than 20 years. It’s a disaster, especially for the man!!! Wish everyone was aware of this and pace themselves, not to get in to this debilitating and chronic condition. I got it being long haul truck driver.

At 64, this is the sort of thing that makes me realize I am not suited for HVAC, despite my interest. Maybe I'll think about work at a supply house, goal = make life easier for the guys actually doing the work.
