The Infancy Gospel of Thomas Explained

Stories about Jesus' birth are famous. But what about stories about Jesus' childhood? One early Christian text, the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, invents some pretty crazy stories about the schoolboy Jesus. But what did this text mean for an ancient audience?

Until you tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth , you will never be taken seriously. You talk about the Jesus doing things than goes against the teachings but in the book of Isaiah 7:14 , Isaiah says that his name shall be called Immanuel. This was 700 plus years before the birth of Jesus. Immanuel mean God with us. Im/man/and/el Immanuel Humans having desire to deceive is of Satan. The truth shall set you free

I thought it was in agreement that the story of Isa/Jesus in the Quran was plagiarized from Thomas' infancy gospel as well as the traditional gospel of Mark? Two out of the four Christian gospels do not mention Joseph at all, one of these is the gospel of Mark. The Quran appears to borrow exclusively from both under Mark including the clay bird story which doesn't appear anywhere else. Yet, the Quran ignores the fact that the narrative is expanded to include Joseph in the other two gospels. I believe a "version" was chosen to exclude Joseph and fabricate a demi-god narrative of Jesus' birth and childhood in the Quran because of Jewish and Islamic standards of their time. For Mary to elope without the consent of her parents, who would have arranged marriages, the bride and groom do not chose each other and to be traveling without a male relative, would call for stoning to death as punishment depending on which culture the story is being delivered to. This is ignored and a story is created to exclude Joseph because he is too controversial. Even the Catholic church to this day insists that Jesus' siblings that are mentioned in the bible are not his blood relatives and "must be from a previous marriage of Joseph's," despite no evidence that they are anything but full blood relatives. In a subjective opinion, I still believe that childhood miracles were fabricated to legitimize a "miraculous virgin birth" that never took place, and that Jesus was conceived and born naturally out of wedlock (there wasn't a formal ceremony) and the couple fled to be counted in a census to avoid punishment. If everything was legitimate, there would be no need for the angel to visit Mary in person or Joseph in a dream. The visitations are assurance that God put the two together, not the parents, which they would have taken some time to consider and may not not even approve. At the time, telling people an angel visited would not be taken seriously. This again, trying to make him sound closer to Heracles type legends to make for easier conversion as what was done with the "blood sacrifice" on the cross. Childhood miracles try to give "evidence" that his birth and as a baby, he was "different" and in turn, legitimizing Mary without Jospeh. Cultural context in shaping the radical difference between texts must be considered when examining such anomalous descriptions that are not found with other authors.

Do you know that back then being a virgin was the equivalent of not being married.
@hoopoe3093

+Sarah:The Jesus story of the Quran was not plagiarized from any sources. There are a lot of differences, except for the clay birds miracles and Jesus spoke as an infant (the Quran says he was the servant, not son of God). They may be similar but not the same. Furthermore, the Quran denies the divinity and the crucifiction of Jesus Christ. Instead, he was a human messenger only sent to the Children of Israel. He preached to ONE true God as in the first of the 10 Commandment says. And there is a chapter named Mary, an honor not even found in the Bible. She is honored and respected, chosen as the woman above all nation. Therefore, Muhammad could not have plagiarized stories from other sources, he was given revelation of Quran directly from Allah God Almighty.

The cultural context of “the alphabet” being “super deep crap”, is important here. As gematria, both Greek, and Hebrew, were a very common practice in first century Judea. 666, “the number of a man”, “for those with eyes to see”, in book attributed to John Of Patmos, is another coded reference to convey a hidden and dangerous political message. There is a numerical value for each letter, in both systems respectively. In the case of 666 or 616 in the other translation, you still get the name Caesar Nero, or Kaiser Neron. (Nrwn Qsr) But yeah, it’s full of esoteric parable, but looks like fan fiction. Is... lol

Definitely going to read the link in the description. I have to admit I surprised myself with how shocked (and how immediate the shock was) at a so-called gospel account describing Jesus as killing not just someone, but multiple someones, and teachers and fellow children at that. I guess growing up with these stories of Jesus in scripture makes it really hard to imagine him killing anyone, and I didn't realize how fully I had internalized that idea as unthinkable.

I remember somewhere in the New Testament Jesus had a burst of rage against a fig three and cursed him to wither on the spot. So the Gospel of Thomas might be true. I read the Gospel of Thomas and Jesus wasnt only killing people he was also healing his friend and resurrecting people that accidentally died around him. For what I understand Jesus used his divine powers against people that were unnecessarily mean towards Him. I didnt feel like he was walking around killing people.

I remember reading that document decades ago... I remember reading about how the child Jesus causing a boy too go blind because that boy bumped into Him. I stopped reading that book. Not because I believed in Jesus, but because I saw the evil in the child Jesus' activities. That told me that the child Jesus in those stories was a human, not a God. Merely a powerfully enlightened human. Yet as a child, had a lot to learn in a short period of time...

I'm happy to see at last a serious analysis of this gospel. Many christians believe that it's just pure nonsense but the way I understood the text is that is in fact a deep thought on the nature of the son of God. As you implied, during his childhood Jesus is little more than a brat with super powers. Thus, having powers over life and death is not enough to be the true son of God : it is when Jesus realizes the responsability that comes with this power and decides to use it for the good of others that he really becomes the son of God. Overall, a very interesting narration on the nature of power and its wielder.

Regularly-scheduled schooling in a classroom with a contracted teacher was a well known fact of classical antiquity, especially in towns and cities around the eastern Mediterranean (including towns/villages along the Nile). Note that schools and schoolteachers in classical antiquity were a feature of urban life, but not rural life, where most of the population lived and worked. In classical antiquity, literacy and schooling were a mark of an urban upbringing considered superior to rural life.

If this was true then Jesus would have been famous all over the place he walked in. He wouldn't have been stranger to many by the time he started preaching. You can see early on his work people asking themselves as "isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph" while making reference to his profession. He was just a normal boy. Don't forget that miracles were at the centre of every human race so is today. That never happened. Plus no reference s ever made in the other gospels about his childhood meaning there was nothing serious to include. He was basically not known until He started his job He was asigned by his Father. One thing we miss here is the fact that when the bible was being written others wrote other stuff too. Things like secular writings, myths and so on were being written at the same time. Not every thing ancient should be linked to Christianity. Not everyone was Christian or religious back then just like today.

there is so much obvious failed apologetic in that I dont even know where to begin. No, Jesus didnt wither a young boy with a touch. and no, he didnt walk on water. no, he didnt raise anyone from the dead. and no, jesus didnt rise from his tomb. jesus wasnt a god. he was a jew who lived and died a natural life. Romans crucified him and left his body to rot on the cross for carrion birds. Because that was what the Romans did as a message to other political insurrectionists.

How was the infancy gospel received among early Christians? What was the general consensus on it?
@ReligionForBreakfast
@ReligionForBreakfast 7 лет назад
Well, presumably some Christians really liked it since it was circulated around enough to end up in Syriac, Greek, and Latin manuscripts. Since copying and translating was difficult back then (not too many skilled, literate scribes), they would have done this only if they found the text valuable. Having said that, some Christian authorities such as Irenaeus come out pretty early saying that this text is heretical. I believe Irenaeus mentions it in Adversus Haeresis 1.20.1

I just found your channel and love how you present these ancient non-canon works in a nuanced way. Why would anyone be making fun of something we don’t know if that relates to our Lord and Savior? Why risk to be condemned for eternity? What gain would you obtain from it besides the praise of the world and yet lose your soul at the end? Are you not afraid of GOD’s power and might?! Would you like someone to make mockery of your mother or father? And would you find it funny? We out to love and respect and fear and honor our Lord and Savior JesusChrist.
