Early Christianity is so fascinating. It is so easy to presuppose that the Christianities and Bibles which exist today were inevitable but so many people had radically different ideas about Christianity and Jesus.
@mahatmarandy5977
@mahatmarandy5977 Год назад
There's a natural winnowing process, you know? Some beliefs tend to be more compatible with whatever society they're in, whereas others are more fringe. Over time the fringe beliefs tend to fade, whereas the more compatible ones tend to kind of combine and conform. Evolution, basically.
@georgew2014
@georgew2014 Год назад
@@mahatmarandy5977 I'd say it was less about evolution and more about what the rulers and church leaders at any given time decided was "in" or "out." The Gnostics were critical of proto-Orthodox teachings; and by extension, critical of the leaders and power structure associated with those teachings. From a basic political standpoint, it makes sense that proto-Orthodox leaders would label Gnostics as heretical. People did hold deep beliefs. But we should not ignore the power games played in the upper echelons of any number of faiths.

The Bible is actually very clear that Judas’s betrayal is ordained by God. It is spoken of in the Psalms, for example. The trouble with popular evangelical Christianity today is that it emphasizes the freedom of will. The Bible does not, nor has historic Christianity. You are quite right to point out that Judas’s betrayal, if ordained by God, is unfair according to a theological system that emphasizes choice (as popular Arminian evangelicalism and Roman Catholicism). It’s plainly inconsistent. However, many evangelical Christians, if they have such questions, are never given answers, and they are discouraged from asking them. If your upbringing is like mine was (fundamentalist, Pentecostal), then you were told “Just believe.” But belief without knowledge is nonsensical. Faith must be grounded in something real, or else it is stupid fantasy. I found answers to my questions in the Westminster Standards. My parents and siblings think I’m a heretic, probably, but by God’s grace I have been brought to faith built on knowledge, on truth, and not on mere feeling or wishful thinking.

Like on some level it makes perfect sense, but it's like, okay, if he *didn't* do that, then what, no one gets salvation? @dominikivankovic63
@dominikivankovic63 Год назад
Interesting topic. What is your reasoning behind it? I would say myth originated in one place and was gradually spread along the old World. It has more sense to me than the notion that all of these myths are referencing the same world-wide flood. I think this myth originated somewhere in the middle east which was a center of domestication and the birth of agriculture. Agriculture was spread through migration from Middle east to many parts of the Old World, and it's not unimaginable that those people/migrants who were bringing the knowledge of farming and agriculture to the rest of the Old World brought these myths and stories with them, which through the next few millenia became for every culture their own distinct flood myth. Problem regarding the flood myths in the New World is that we cannot go back in time and ask native people what is the exact story, we only have stories which were filtered through and written down by the 15th century spanish monks, who firmly believed in the story about the Noah's ark to be truth. That easily could have resulted, and most probably it did, in those monks trying to connect some stories about the floods in the New World with Noah's ark, thus making those stories from the New World seem much more simmilar to the story of Noah's ark than it probably actually was, maybe they were not even remotely simmilar. (mind you that in 15th century there was no spanish-native american dictionary, so much of the actual stories from the New World were highly reinterpretated while being written down and we will never know what the actual story was like) These are not mine ideas, I heard it from several archeologists and thus far it's the explanation for the world-wide spread of the flood myth which for me makes the most sense. Far from saying it's the actual truth, no one can know that, but that's what makes it a interesting topic for discussion.

The area the ancient israelites/Judaens lived, known today as levant, back then it was called, Canaan. It was the connection point between africa, europe, and asia all the trade routes go through Canaan. (Hence way Egypt and the Hittites were fighting over that area.) This means goods, people, and ideas came through there all the time. Its less about a real world wide flood, but the melding of different peoples. Some of tells in the old testament were most likely influence by these tales and incorperated them and slightly change them to fit in. People of the bronze and iron age record history different, adding embellishments and literary devices (such as characters) to make theological points. The accuracy of the account mattered little, what did matter was what were they trying to tell you.

The apostles in a state of "Confusion" is probably the best description of the development of Christianity. A group of people who thought they knew what was happening but then the expected revival of the Davidic kingdom didn't show up and oust the Romans, and the messiah was killed there was a lot of explaining to do. The sequence we have received: the proto-orthodox begat the orthodox who begat the orthodox who begat the schisms that begat contemporary christianity; would most likely sound as bizarre to the early Jesus communities as this gospel sounds to us. In The Gospel According to Me Judas is more an everyman rather than a great betrayer. His sins of greed, selfishness and egoism are not unique but universal. That we identify more with the apostles, that understand the way of Jesus and that our brand of Christianity is the true path is probably as confused as the communities of Paul, Judas, Thomas or Seth.

@@Daniel_Godismyjudge--Isah33.22 okay so for clarification, I think all of the gnostic texts are flat out fake and unreliable. Every single one of the gnostic gospels contradicts each other in some way, shape, or form. So simply put, I think the Gospel of Judas is just a bunch of nonsense. That said, God knows all, and someone had to betray Jesus for everything to play out as it was supposed to. I don't believe Jesus told Judas to betray him on purpose. I more so believe God, and thus Jesus, knew the outcome of what Judas was going to do and Jesus let it play out so that everything that needs to happen, did and could happen. If Judas doesn't betray Jesus, than Peter doesn't deny him 3 times before the rooster crowed. It played out exactly how it was always ever going to play out. Yes, it was Judas's free will to betray Jesus, but Jesus already knew his free will would take him to that betrayal, and did not stop him, even though he could have because he's all knowing Ultimately I look at the story of Judas as a tragedy, but it was a tragedy that brought salvation for all mankind. I find it irritating that some people treat this 'gospels' as of equal value or even more value than the 4 Gospels we have in the canon. The Gospel of Judas was clearly and unequivocally written in the mid to late 2nd century and reflects non-Jewish theology; therefore the probability that it somehow goes back to the historical Jesus is extremely unlikely. The Gospel of Mark, by way of contrast, was written around AD 70; and the letters of Paul, which contain a very different theology to the Gospel of Judas, were written around AD 50 or there about.

With regard to contradictions in the Bible Bart Ehrman has presented on various occasions the case of Judas Iscariot. He considers the two different accounts, in Matthew 27 and in Acts 1 as incompatible. He is right I suppose, but he overlooks something important. I have responded in different ways, but there is some confusion. To clarify, I want to evaluate my thoughts and rewrite my comment in a more subtle way. The two accounts indeed seem very weird, it is plausible to reject them as incompatible. So there must be something else going on rather than a hanging or another accident in which Judas burst open and his guts came out. To argue that Judas did not strangle himself, but is still alive when Jesus appeared to the twelve disciples, I would like to mention eight points. This is also an attempt to rehabilitate Juda(s), the Jew. 1 John 20:24 says: now Thomas one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. Jesus appeared to eleven disciples, so including Judas, since he is only replaced after the Ascension. There is a problem with the grammar when you take 'the twelve' as a technical term. Please read carefully, the pronomen personel 'them' refers directly to ‘the twelve.’ The pronoun cannot refer to a situation in the past. 2 1 Corinthians 15:5 says: …and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. When Paul writes about the appearance of Jesus, he writes about the situation before the Ascension, so before the replacement of Judas by Matthias which happened after the Ascension. And then there were twelve disciples, Judas including. So it's not the question that Judas is replaced, but that he didn't hang himself. 3 The translation ’hanged himself’ is reasonable but disputable. The Greek απάγχω, composition of από and άγχω means literally squeeze (esp. the throat), strangle, throttle and is also used in derivative or metaphorical meanings as choked with anger, of pressing creditors, of a guilty conscience etc. In Matthew 27:5 απήγξατο appears as 3rd sg. Aoristus Medium and can therefore be translated as strangled or hanged himself. But as I said, a derivative meaning is obvious and more plausible. Therefore I propose the following translation: And hurling the pieces of silver in the sanctuary he left; and after he went off, he got very scared. Interestingly, the Dutch Statenvertaling, which is considered one of the most accurate translations in existence, translates with 'verworgde zichzelf.' It places the reflexive pronoun 'zichzelf' in italics, meaning that this word is not in the text, but has been added as a clarification. This is a textbook example of precise translation. In fact, it then says that his throat was constricted. So it doesn't say that he squeezes his throat himself. A derivative or metaphorical meaning is more likely in that case. The only English translation I know that lists the reflexive pronoun in italics is the Disciples' Literal New Testament (DLNT): And having thrown the silver-coins into the temple, he departed. And having gone away, he hanged himself. So again, this translation is not that literal as to get rid of the hanging. 4 After the Ascension the disciples assembled again to replace Judas. I consider the translation of Acts 1:18 to be very disputable. Only if we assume that Judas has hanged himself and felt, the translation is conceivable. First I would like to mention the passage in the King James Bible: Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out. Let ‘s focus on the second part of verse 18: καί πρηνής γενόμενος έλάκησεν μέσος καί έξεχύθη πάντα τά σπλάχνα αύτού The word translated as headlong, πρηνής can mean: with the head foremost, but the first meaning of πρηνής (nom. sg.) is: with the face downwards, bended or lying on ones stomach. By the way, the word 'prone' is still used in English in the meaning of 'prone position.' It means: to lie on the stomach. Derived meanings are: susceptible, amenable, receptive, open minded, open for suggestions and even vulnerable. Nota bene: the word falling is not in the Greek text, γενόμενος (nom. sg. part. Aoristus of the verb γίγνομαι) means: come into being, take place. People have in their mind, Judas has hanged, so he has to fall. That is what we call prejudice. If we look at the text with an open mind, we will translate differently. I propose: (being) with his face turned to the ground; or shortly: stooped or knelt. To support my argument I mention the way in which the Vulgate reconciled the two reports. The Vulgate translates Acts 1:18 as following: …et hic quidem possedit agrum de mercede iniquitatis et suspensus crepuit medius et diffusa sunt omnia viscera eius (…. he hanged, burst in the midst and his viscera gushed out). The Wycliffe Bible remains the same. But these translations are plainly wrong. Does the Roman church want Judas to hang? Subsequent (protestant) translations, as the King James Version, changed the text in the falling headlong. The word translated as burst, έλακησεν (3rd. sg. Aoristus of the verb λάσκω, λακάω or ληκέω) means: ring, rattle, crack or burst (especially of things) and scream, shout or cry aloud (especially of animals or human beings). (1) That his bowels gushed out is a way of saying, to express a deep sort of compassion or affection. In Hebrew it is referred to as rechamim. In particular it is used to mention God's mercy. The Dutch language has a great word for it, namely: barmhartigheid. Σπλάχνα is been used at several places in the New Testament: 1 John 3:17; 2 Cor. 6:12, 7:15; Col. 3:12; Philemon: 7, 12, 20; Philippians 1:8, 2:1, Luke 1:78. To mention only Luke: Through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us. If it is metaphorically translated in those places, it is likely to do this here as well. To conclude, I suggest the following translation: Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity, when he knelt down, he screamed with great compassion.

Did Jesus himself decided to impregnate his own mother to give birth to himself? Did he then forgot his previous form and lost his powers? Did he acquire part of the power growing up? Could he see the future? Was he who decided his own death? Did he knew everything before hand (can somebody with these type of power really be betrayed?)? What is the point of the "sacrifice" if he knew he would resuscitate? Was it all a joke on the naked monkeys? And last but not least: what type of wine and alcohol % did he transform from water, Merlot?

There is a lost Christian text which was found by farmers, i think it included several separate texts one of which they burned for fuel before realizing their importance. They’re beautifully written and significantly they refer to Christ as “son of man” which is incredible. He speaks about how he wishes to bring all of mankind to transform to sons of god and join Jesus as he joined with god. They’re included in the Sutras of Christ, the first book to include every single quote of Jesus in the Bible and without. It helped me tremendously in understanding that “allow us to share in your divinity as you have shared in our humanity” is very literal, Jesus is the son of man, and provided a path through which we may too become one with god as jesus is. This is my belief, the book is incredible and helped me with my faith personally.

Reminds me of the Borges story “three versions of Judas”, and Borges was surely knowledgeable of these things. "God became a man completely, a man to the point of infamy, a man to the point of being reprehensible - all the way to the abyss. In order to save us, He could have chosen any of the destinies which together weave the uncertain web of history; He could have been Alexander, or Pythagoras, or Rurik, or Jesus; He chose an infamous destiny: He was Judas."

The problem that I face when presented with this perspective is - why would God Almighty send Jesus only to speak in riddles and confuse us more? “Laughing” at the disciples and telling them “you’re going to just lead the people more astray....” without clear explanations, not guesses, as to what God wants from us.... that isn’t clarifying, it’s chaos. So I cannot grasp that God would send Jesus for that purpose.

Any Christian who "hates" Judas is simply not aware of the absurd contradiction contained in their ignorant hatred. If Judas had not fulfilled is role as the "betrayer" the entire house of irrational cards which comprise the "savior myth" of Christianity falls apart. Judas could not possibly do anything other than what he did, and he had no more of an "option" to do otherwise than Jesus himself did. This is just one of the many contradictions and logical lunacies one finds in the bible. Seeking a logical series of events, logical behavior, rational thinking, or accurate historical accounts in "sacred texts" is always a fool's errand.
