Rainbow Rock in brick NJ.!!! I bought all the KIss bootlegs there. Cobo 76, Houston 77 Largo 79. Inner sanctum 1980 all in vhs in mid to late 80s. Only had this as kiss destroys Anaheim on vinyl. Was a red sleeve with only gene on it. Gary was the man he was so fucking cool and turned us on to so much cool music and if I remember he had the destroyer tattoo. Thanks for rehashing old memories.

It was the best place to get bootlegs!

I was always obsessed with seeing the GOT Machine, The Tentacle Tree and rock or crystal garden on the stage front and glimpses of each area.

Outstanding episode! you guys were the perfect duo for this podcast. You made me go back in time, the amount of detail covered in that one hour and 26 minutes was gigantic. Thank you Andrew for mentioning Gary Danko, I went to his store a couple days after the 1989 New Jersey Kiss convention and I made an amazing video that day. This is going to sound incredible but it's true; 2 years ago I was chatting with my neighbor about life and I was wearing a Kiss shirt. He says to me I saw Kiss back in 70's. Of course I asked him where and when exactly. He said in Anaheim and he said it was in a stadium and Bob Seger, Ted Nugent and Montrose opened for them. He ended up in front of Gene for the concert. I live in San Juan Capistrano in California and my neighbor Kevin saw Kiss at one of their most iconic show. Julian and Andrew, you made this video feel like a 15 minutes video. I was so into it. Thank you, guys. Very well done.

I bought the Houston 1976 video at a record show in early 1990. I believe I still have that original videotape. I think even in 1990 that show had been around bootleg circles for a little while though I couldn't tell you for how long. The version I got was riddled with harsh dropouts for like the first 5 minutes. That plus the one single side camera angle to start it made me initially really disappointed. It was actually one of the very first bootleg videos I had ever even acquired. A few years later I watched the video again and once I got past the first 5 minutes it turned out the dropouts subside significantly, another camera angle is revealed and the video turned out to be actually pretty decent. I think I have come across upgrades since then but it's all big blur of KISS footage at this point.

I remember seeing this on a trading list in early 1990. The HITS tour kept on being postponed and here in Europe we were in limbo waiting on any news about what’s to come. And then I see this list from a then quite prominent US Kiss dealer that I’d met about a year before in the Summer of 88 on the EU leg of the CN tour. It said something like all new pro shot video of the legendary Anaheim show. Ordered it an about a month later me and two friends sat on the couch in my room watching it on my region free Panasonic VHS player. This was the very first version/transfer in really good quality (although far from the recently released one on factory pressed DVD in Japan) with the original line feed sound. Later versions would have either the audience tape or the soundboard dubbed to the video with mixed results. Magical time when regularly classic Kiss pro shots popped up in bootleg circles. Believe all sourced from either Ace or Bill Aucoin who were in need of paying the bills.😄

GREAT episode - thank you! More PLEASE! Two things about the Anaheim show, that I don't think you mentioned: 1) The Anaheim Billboard you show again and again, is actually visible in one or two shots in a scene of Woody Allen's 'Annie Hall' - it's "blink-and-you'll-miss-it", but it's there! 2) On the wideshot version, you can see somebody breathing fire in the audience at several point during the second half of the show. You might have to do what I did, and watch it on a large screen with a projector (a great way of watching the wide angle video, by the way) to really see it. At some point I think you can see security trying to get the guy, but the picture quality is a little fuzzy, so I'm not sure.

The most effective part of the show i believe were the "light chasers". The light chaser effect was absolutely brilliant. You had to see it in person...but you can get an idea of it on the St. Louis video from '76

The areas of Los Angeles/Anaheim were Alive with energy around the time of the Anaheim Stadium show. Lots of Kiss Talk among kids and on the radio. I had to sit and just imagine what was going on from 50 miles away with the "Spirit of '76" Tour poster on my wall. That is all an 11 year old could possibly hope for- using our imagination.

Really good analysis of this show guys, very informative, I always found the Anaheim show to be lacking in quality (video/audio) also the camera work is not good and you can see how the cameras a way zoomed up because of how far away they are from the stage. But Good work guys I’ll have to watch your other video now! 👍

Ya know I have heard from many sources over the years about how there's better versions of so much stuff that was on the KISSOLOGY DVDs. Would you maybe do a show that's devoted to KISSOLOGY and go through the DVD sets video by video and talk about whether each video on the set is the best version out there or if better versions have shown up etc. Maybe even show A --> B comparisons between the footage on the DVDs and other superior footage out there to show the real difference quality. KISSOLOGY was meant to be the gold standard but show us exactly how it isn't.

J - Only because you asked for listener feedback & critique: You erroneously mention “Sam The Serpent” as part of the DESTROYER stage set. This stage has “The Tentacle Tree”. “Sam” did not appear until the LOVE GUN stage.
