The CityRover is an ironic tale of automotive collaboration and failure between BMW, Ford, Tata, and MG Rover, and a direct connection to the fortunes of Jaguar Land Rover, the upcoming Jaguar XJ, and the rumoured Road Rover.

The CityRover should have been badged the Austin City and sold for around £4.5k for the base model. Still plenty of profit, and the car’s practicality and value would have been better suited to the Austin brand as opposed to Rover.

Or, if they couldn't afford to relaunch the brand, they could have used Tata moniker and become a official importer of Tata Motors - this could lead into wider variety of lineups they can sell. Also, if they can market very well, Tata can substitute low-priced motoring market with offroad market where Austin & classic Land Rover have been. It's just my opinion. So you can conclude it in your own way! ;)

Nice presentation 👌. They have launched a model based on Land Rover, called Tata Harrier. The Tata Harrier will be the first Tata to showcase Land Rover DNA in the form of an all-new platform based on the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

During CV lock down, I have developed an enjoyment in watching videos on British built cars. I've owned a few Rovers (414 and 214) and they were both very good for the money. The 214 I purchased for only a few hundred as a means of transport whilst I was waiting on a company car and although I had to fill the radiator daily, it did not let me down. You channel and 'idriveclassic' have helped keep me entertained and I enjoy the enthusiasm you and others have for these British built and designed cars.

Rover were shafted pretty much from the creation of BL right up until the end. The name was milked for all it was worth and had some real tat associated with it, and all the company could do was hark back to the P5/P6 days. Far too much was loaded onto the shoulders of Rover as BL fell.

@HerrBjork

I think I know of a recipe that could bring back the Rover marque quite successfully: You take the Jaguar XE, change the front and rear a bit---for example a grille akin to the P5, and maybe even some new, quad circular headlights---to make the car less sporty looking and more classy, replace gloss black plastic and brushed metal with wood and chrome (in a tasteful manner of course), and tune the drivetrain and suspension more towards comfort than sportiness. A Rover P7 (as an example for a name) would probably sell quite well, especially in China where business sedans are all the rage

Actually Rover engineers in India wanted to make more changes/improvements to the Indica at the beginning, eg gearchange, but senior Rover management wouldn't listen and didn't allow it so it was launched in the UK with perceived faults that helped to make it fail.

To Be, fair, it would be nice to see lots of things back, but they are gone. Rover stood for a marque and a way of life the history the passion the quality. Its all gone so if there were a rover relaunch it would be a modern car with a badge that had an R O V E R on it, nothing to do with Rover marque or background. The british worker spoilt the car industry, the people that built it up no longer exist in society, business is totally different.

Isn't it SAIC that own Rover now, and sell them as Roewe models in China?

MG Rover never owned the right to the Rover name, it was licensed out to them by BMW until they went bust. SAIC created and use the ‘Roewe’ marque in China as a substitute for the Rover name.

I borrowed a 3yr old CityRover back in 2007 and to be fair it drove pretty well, was pretty economical and nippy, I quite liked it. So what about a feature on what is the definition of a classic car these days? I know that a lot of people say that it’s cars over 20yrs old, but does that mean that every 20yr old car on the road gains classic status?
@TwinCam
@TwinCam 4 года назад
I think there's an enormous grey area and it's pretty impossible to put a year on it. I think a Rover 75 is a classic but the E46 BMW is nowhere near. It all depends on the car and its story.
@willswheels283
@willswheels283 4 года назад
Twin-Cam I agree, I definately think the 75 if not already a modern classic will be in the next few short years. I like the 25 too, the interiors are not as nice as the 75’s interior but they are certainly comfortable, good to drive, and most importantly it’s not a Rover based on a Honda or anything else, it’s a proper modern Rover. It’s my next car of choice
@frglee
@frglee 4 года назад
Hubnut owned an old one for a bit a year or so back, fixed it up a bit and made a few interesting vids about it. I got the general impression of 'meh', in that it was nothing special, but ran well enough. The original reviewers were certainly pretty unimpressed, as I recall.There are still some of these on the roads and a couple of years back you could get a used one in reasonable shape for around a grand (I was almost tempted to buy one). Lots of older people bought them, didn't do much mileage in them, and they were probably garaged and looked after. Even so, that some are still around after nearly two decades seems to me, some kind of testament to Tata producing a fairly solid little car at least.
@TwinCam
@TwinCam 4 года назад
There’s no denying it’s a rugged car, it had to be considering the environment it was designed to operate in. I’m sure Ian still owns his CityRover, but of course he is in Australia at the moment.

I see the city rover in the same vain as the toyota prius because people hate them but both work for a living and work well at what they do, the city rover's spiritual successor (even though its from a different company) is the Dacia Sandero in my opinion because they are both utilitarian city cars

The CityRover was a pile of shite. Based on the Tata Indica it was outclassed by everything, made in India and using an old, puny 54bhp Peugeot sourced engine. It fell woefully short of sales expectations.
@anthonyperkins7556
@anthonyperkins7556 4 года назад
The Cityrover was an absolute joke, the very first ones has terrible build quality faults and flimsy interior quality, but while the later ones were better, it still wasn't enough to save it because the reputation set by the first was a bad impression that stuck like mud. Also to go to a turd world car manufacturer like Tata to ask them to produce a small cheap city car and then price inflate it to ridiculous levels as MGRover did was wrong and stupid in the extreme. No way was it worth the ridiculous asking price MGRover wanted for it either....

I didn't bother with the 2nd generation even though it was better made and built, the quality of the first Cityrover should've been better than it was and if it was I would have kept it longer.
