It is still cold in Hokkaido in March, but trees begin to actively suck up moisture and nutrients from their roots in preparation for spring. Maple trees also actively circulate sap throughout the branches, preparing for the season of new greenery. If sap seeps out from branches damaged in winter, it will turn into icicles in the cold of night.
北海道の3月はまだ寒いのですが、木々は春に備えて根から水分や栄養を盛んに吸い上げるようになります。カエデの木も活発に樹液を小枝の隅々にまで巡らせて新緑の季節に向けて準備を進めるのですが、冬に傷付いた枝から樹液が染み出ると夜の寒さでツララになってしまいます。
Maple sap and icicles are particularly sweet and delicious, so they are a favorite food of Japanese long-tailed tits, marsh tits, and brown-eared bulbuls.
カエデの木の樹液やツララは特に甘くて美味しいので、シマエナガやハシブトガラやヒヨドリの大好物です。
The little birds hover and lick the sweet sap that accumulates at the tip of the icicles, and their behavior is really cute. Watching them warms my heart even in the cold winter.
小鳥たちはホバリングしながらツララの先端に貯まる甘い樹液を舐めるのですが、その仕草は実に可愛らしいですね。私もその姿を見ていると寒い冬でも気持ちが温まるほどです。
Even so, I was surprised when the long-tailed tit started licking the tip of the icicle while hovering, and the base of the icicle came off the branch and fell. However, it was amazing that the long-tailed tit continued to lick the tip of the falling icicle without panicking. I couldn't help but laugh when I watched the video again.
それにしても、シマエナガがホバリングしながらツララの先端を舐め始めた時にツララの根本が枝から外れて落下したのには私もビックリしました。しかしシマエナガは慌てずに落下するツララの先端を舐め続けていたのが凄いですね。私はビデオを見直した時に思わず笑ってしまいました。
The brown-eared bulbuls also hover, of course, but perhaps the small amount of sweet sap that accumulates at the tip of the icicles is not enough for them, so in many cases they break off the tip of the icicle and swallow it. Wow, that's amazing.
ヒヨドリももちろんホバリングはするのですが、ツララの先端に貯まる少量の甘い樹液の量では物足りないのか、多くの場合はツララの先端をへし折って飲み込んでいました。いやはや、凄いです。
I was able to enjoy the amusing sight of small birds eating, which is unique to the cold season.
寒い季節ならではの小鳥たちの愉快な食事風景を楽しむことができました。
