if 6 was 9 is probably my favourite guitar tone ever. psychedelic and badass

RIP Jimi. Legendary. I'm waving my freak flag.

This had a great blues rhythm to psychaedelic rock. It was jgreat because it just set aside the confusion of the '60's and identified how the individual would carry on in the midst of it all if they were hip enough to get the message. Too Cool for words.

When this album was recorded and mixed, Jimi took the final mix tape reel home with him but he left it in a taxi and it got lost forever. They then had to remix the entire album quickly as it was due for release. They managed to get all the other songs sounding ok but couldn't get the mix for "If 6 was 9" right. Thankfully, bassist Noel Redding had a rough copy at home which he brought in.

Eddie is smiling about that flute and the noise of horses steps but when i 1st listen to it i was so got about this and i still feel something special about Jimi idea, i was 11 when i 1st listen to Jimi, now i m 59 still feel that deep feeling

Never realized that was Jimi playing the recorder at the end of this track! Just came back to this song today cause I was listening to Ruby Tuesday, which also has a recorder in it (thought it was a flute at first) Brian Jones played recorder on that track. Cool instrument, you can pick up a nice one for only $20-30 - will have to get one to mess with myself.

I reckon that recorder sound is a microphone waved about very close to the back of a valve amp ,we used to do it messing around at rehearsals. Try it out folks .

I had read that the 'recorder' sound was headphone feedback by Jimi. First time I heard it was Jimi playing a recorder. It def sounds like a recorder.

Exactly ,I believe that is same thing Hendrix heard in his head, know i did.. also the feedback sounds out of control like he's trying to shut the damn thing off, Like isle of white, in between songs jimi wha pedal is left on screamin feedback, the way he casually stomps the shit out is good.

Hendrix was really discovered as a headliner by and marketed to the mainstream rock/hippie phenom that was happening in the sixties. Thank goodness he was because if he had just caught on as a session musician at Stax or somewhere a lot of good music would have never been created. He brought a lot of soul & funk and plain ole street lexicon to the whole rock scene. One of the unwritten rules of street jargon among African Americans was when a hip word of phrase assimilated out to the suburbs it is time to change up. The word bro is a good example. The change up word was blood. If you listen carefully that is what the back up singers, Mitch & Noel, are saying; "sing your song blood". I'm sure Jimi coached them up on that.

I had a reel to reel and if you put the mic near the speaker it sounded just like this supposed recorder.

for me I don't bury clothes I wear them and I always add Vocals first thing because the first instrument was earthlings having voices the drums and flute was secondary the sax was newest in the set of centuries and the guitar was the latest
