I'm glad these clips are coming out (s/o editor/uploader) and that Big A talks about these topics. I've been having a rough time with work and money lately, and it's hard to really talk about it because it's such a taboo topic for most people. I hope things get better for me and every other chatter and commentor who work nonstop just to put food on the table and sleep in a bed at night.

Atrioc my dude... I really needed this video today, thanks so much :) Myself and 7 other colleagues got laid off a few days ago and it's been a mix of emotions. I'd been working as a community manager for a UGC content platform with hundreds of thousands of users, and apparently they no longer need the community department because they are not profitable enough, despite being repeatedly told what customers want and how to improve their experience to make them stick around longer and spend money. Feels like a massive slap in the face. Love watching your conteent dude, keep it up

I'm sorry to hear that man :( Had some friends get hit with layoffs lately and they had a similar experience - described it as a huge slap in the face. Just sucks. Appreciate the kind words on the content and wish you well on the hunt.

I graduated last year with an Information Science degree. I didn't have anything lined up, as I had been training really hard my entire senior year to ride a bicycle around the US (and, of course, busy with school work). I've been back from that journey for several months now and the job search grind has been so demoralizing. I really enjoyed the technical sides of my degree (we did a lot of Data Science projects in R and Python), but I know that I just don't have the programming knowledge necessary to get into the technical side of the field. The last thing I want to do is shitty financial services, but I'm not sure what else I really have a chance in getting. The last few months have been mentally hellish, as I moved out of my college town into a new city (with my family) where I know absolutely nobody. I feel guilty doing anything besides reviewing my school projects/honing my skills or applying to jobs, but I also feel like I'm going crazy all the time. I feel like everything in my life has stalled out, and it really, really sucks..

You should reach out to any friends or people you studied with in school and see where they ended up. They might be able to work with their managers to get you a position.

Definitely very hard situation to deal with, but just the fact that your instinct says to not give up and to just study to get to the level you want makes me think that at the end of the day everything will work out fine

Well, that's part of my problem. After COVID hit, I went online and stayed online. I ended up graduating without any debt and a great GPA (bc of scholarships and living with family), but I wasn't able to really make any connections. I totally regret it in hindsight, but it is what it is.@@dakotaaesoph

Thanks for the encouragement. Honestly, I don't always feel as positive as my comment made it seem, but I know I can't just give up on life. I have aspirations and goals, so no matter how impossibly far away they seem at the moment, I just can't give into despair. @@HyperKryst

One of the biggest things that has kept me in my job which by a lot of metrics is very mediocre in pay and benefits, is the sheer amount of data and reports at the lowest level employees fingertips, you can see KPIs minute by minute and are free to experiment with how you sell and how you make Margin... You can build an outstanding performance review just by knowing how you contribute and because everyone has the same data, your managers have no choice but to be fair to you

Best strat when you're in uni is to find a part-time job in a company you want to work in, or at least in a field you want to work in. There's a 90% chance at least that they'll want to continue with you after graduation. And your starting salary will be better than that of a fresh unproven graduate if you play your cards right. Will this land you your dream job? No. But if you survive for 2 or 3 years you'll be so much closer to your goal once recruiters start looking and you make your CV discoverable. Have I enjoyed my uni life to the fullest? No. Absolutely not. Instead of partying and fucking around, I was always at work and doing other stuff. But that's a sacrifice I was willing to make. We'll see if it works out

Went from working at the HQ of an S&P 500 company where the corporate politics and supervisors were incredibly toxic down to a company of only 15 people where everyone feels more like a family and the difference has been night and day on my happiness. The people you work with make a giant difference on how well you feel like you fit and and your overall enjoyment of your work. Went from a supervisor where anytime I heard from them it felt like a 50/50 guess on whether or not their calling me out over "fucking up" to a manager that feels more like a mentor and who I regular grab lunch with and enjoy hanging around.

If someone was hired to build a robot to replace me, I will partake in office guerilla warfare where I make very minute things in their life a little bit more difficult or uncomfortable in hopes that enough of it piles on to make them want to quit the company. No hard feelings, future ML devs.

I remember someone leaving a RIOT packet at my meal prep job around 2015-2016 that looked very similar to that interviewing packet. I think it was about interviewing or first hires for engineers or a new department for engineers. It was very interesting to see behind the curtain, but my perpetually stoned ass could not understand it for the life of me. $0.02 for anyone

Im being laid off from a job where 90% what i had to do absolutely sucked. You 100% hit the nail on the head for why. I mostly did marketing but noone cared. If my boss needed to do a final check it would feel like I was bothering him with it and it would take weeks some time. Great video.

I would to see how Atrioc interviewed people at Twitch/ Nvidia. I did a lot of interviews at my last company and looked for general agreeableness and an 8+ out of 10 on problem solving. Now I find myself in a more senior position at a smaller company, and will need to lead interviews soon

Hey Big A. I feel like part of what you said is contradictory. I am a high school teacher and feel like all 3 things you said (about having a happy job) apply to me. I absolutely adore my coworkers, I can track my success both qualitatively and quantitatively, and I feel like I make a difference with at least a few of my students. I think a lot of my coworkers would say the same, yet, as you know, most teachers are miserable right now. Why do you think that is?

Blue collar work is stable as hell and pays well folks, especially for us gen z folk, the positions are in increasing demand as the older generations retire. You dont even have to break you back over it, there are skilled positions like equipment operating (which is fun as hell, damn near a video game) that pay insanely well. The benefits are plentiful, the work is rewarding, its in high demand, the pay increases with inflation, if yall are willing to put in 4 years for college an apprenticeship is a breeze.

The ability to measure whether you’ve done a good job is so important. I’m unfortunately in a position where the only numerical feedback on my performance is related to administrative busywork, rather than the on-the-ground work I do with my project teams that enables them to do their job properly. It’s incredibly demoralizing

do you guys think its still worth going to college? just turned 22 don't wanna work shitty minimum wage jobs forever, i want to learn coding and i could def teach myself ive already started but seems like it will be really hard to find work without a degree but id also need to take out a student loan to be able to and i dont wanna f myself harder
@taktec8055
@taktec8055 4 месяца назад
Definitely not worth if you have to take out a loan and cant pay it off. Id say keep learning how to code on your own and eventually make something that proves your skill. Theres also working freelance, making courses, making some form of youtube content related to coding, and more. Itll take a long time but if youre motivated you can make crazy progress in a year while avoiding student loan debt. If you do end up going the college route try to get as many scholarships as you can.

I don't know how common it is in the US but comp sci for system integration can also be learned in an apprenticeship. Whether you end up in some office changing broken keyboards or actually code the custom software the office is using depends on how much you want to put into it.

If there something you like to do and you need degree for that then yes for sure If you only care about money then fuck no . In 4 years you can make much more money other ways. I have buddies who trade stocks other who sell things online and they make bank. Some did go to learn to become a doctor/engineer ect Which is also good because it's their passion. Money alone is everywhere

You've probably heard this already but trades are a great option with dozens of different career opportunities. You probably will be a manual labor grunt for a few years (still good pay) and work your way up to an office or inspection position.

Can big A do a video explaining why every youtube video changes title 2 hours after being uploaded? It's kind of cringe
@Dschonathan
@Dschonathan 4 месяца назад
You mean the thumbnail and title? That's just new tech creators figured out to increase the rate that people click on a video. If you scroll through content, see a video but decide "naaaah, doesn't interest me" your brain bookmarks that into the "already decided no" category and when you encounter the same video again a few hours or days later your brain doesn't second guess the decision. It just remembers that it already decided "no" for this one instead of thinking about it again and discards it immediately. Changing the thumbnail and title resets that decision your brain made and allows it to give the video a second chance.
@ff2ilip
@ff2ilip 4 месяца назад
@@Dschonathan It's not really about trying to get people who already decided "no" to click on it eventually. It's more that the creator checks after a few hours if the video is performing well, and if it's underperforming, he can change the name and thumbnail to something better so that new people who haven't seen the old one yet are more likely to click on it
@Dschonathan
@Dschonathan 4 месяца назад
@@ff2ilip It for sure started out as that but at this point I believe at least some channels switch up the thumbnail and title guaranteed after x amount of hours or days.
