I feel like trades are one of the most overlooked jobs. When I was in high school it felt like I was presented with the choice of getting a dead-end job or going to college. I really started hating school in my junior/senior year and decided to take a gap year and try working as a stockman for an electrical company. I absolutely loved it, 2.5 years have passed and I'm now about halfway through my apprenticeship making good money. I really wish jobs like this were more emphasized in high school, maybe even allow people to try trade school for senior year.

What should be emphasized but isn’t (at least in the US) is community college. You can learn a trade there, or get an AA and transfer to a 4 year university/college. It’s also relatively cheap (units were $30 when I went) and I transferred to a 4 year top 50 school. I went back to community college for EMT school and it was a lot cheaper than other places.

If you're wanting to get into tech without a degree, work with your friends and social network and find someone who can vouch for your work ethic and passion and knowledge. Once you have your foot in the door, transferring from company to company without a degree is way easier and a lot of companies will want to try and keep you by training you to move to other parts of the company. This is fairly anecdotal and basically how I did it and I'm sitting at 60k, no degree and no certs. If you're wanting to at least look a little professional, get some certs like A+, Sec+, CCNA, or whatever your passion is in tech and try to take a couple courses over a couple years at a local college, because some college is better than no college.

I feel degrees are becoming less and less valuable. AI could revolutionize education... but with how much corruption and greed is in our Capitalist society/government I doubt it. They'd probably rather slash the budget than improve the education of future generations. Instead America decided to limit higher education access to the wealthy, limiting the poorer people to depend on charity (scholarships) to further their own future. They allow predatory loans to force people into debt for most of their lives. They slash the public education budget continually. America gets by because there's so many people... but I don't think a system that doesn't prioritize the future generations is going to stay the top superpower forever. Exploiting your own citizens over and over has to come at a cost...

For @GrimShady99 who asked about going back to uni to get a job in tech, don't bother what would be a better, cheaper, and less time consuming approach would be to do some certs. Find a cert that interests you and do it, they are quite expensive but waaaaay cheaper than uni fees. My recommendation would be maybe like a devops cert maybe something in Azure or AWS.

And then my parents were amazing and payed the remaining amount for me. But without that it easily would have been 30k or more (been years since I looked at it). Do the work and you’ll be rewarded.

League coaching was decent stuff when I was able to do it around season 10, It was zero effort since if their rank was diamond or under I'd just say the exact same shit every session with every player and if they were masters+ coaching was legit fun and interesting. It's crazy to me that I'd be paid like $30/hr to tell some plat player the exact same obvious shit like "play parallel, trade on tempo, look at map" then a week later they'd pay me again with a new replay of the exact same thing lol

A major should be fun: Your major should be something you’re passionate about learning and excited to experience as a career. People who go into majors that they don’t like tend to not get involved in other ways: internships, seminars, networking events, career fairs, etc. It’s setting yourself up to be a weak candidate in the future and a self fulfilling prophecy of your degree not being worth it. You get out of college what you put in.

As someone who was in the same position. Don't live in the dorms if you can commute instead. Living on campus might be nice for making friends and not having to drive to class, but the extra cost just gives you more financial stress on top of all the classwork you'll have to deal with. I've stayed home all 4 years so far, and it's been really nice to have the extra spending money. It's just up to what you value more.

What's the cost of an undergrad degree in the US? I mean obviously it's going to differ by subject but I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Engineering in Australia. The estimate cost of my degree as a domestic student is about AU$34,000 (US$22,077 as of 29/2). I don't come from the richest of backgrounds but I'm expecting to only have about AU$10-15,000 of student debt when I graduate which does not seem crippling. All the American media I see makes it look like it's a lot more expensive over there.
@aidend8029
@aidend8029 4 месяца назад
It can be very different depending on which university you go to, but $10,000 per year is average tuition. Most undergrad degrees are 4 years and some are 5, so 40-50K is expected tuition cost. If you are living on campus or in an apartment nearby you can expect to spend 10-15K per year on housing. All together its not uncommon to spend over $100,000 getting your degree
@pasta-and-heroin
@pasta-and-heroin 4 месяца назад
Mate besides the extreme ballooning of cost that we haven’t really seen, the major difference between us & them is how the debt is collected. here in Aus you could theoretically never pay your dues back, as you need to earn a certain amount per year before payments are even required. Over there, you are expected to pay it back *no matter what*. death is the only way to escape it - and even then, due to their appalling consumer protections & state/federal agency enforcement, people are conned by collectors on ‘dead’ debt. It’s fucked, you couldn’t pay me to live in that hell hole. We’re very lucky (:
@DuckyyFuzzz
@DuckyyFuzzz 4 месяца назад
@@aidend8029it also depends on whether you get into a private school vs public, go to a college in a state you have residency in, choose community college vs uni, complete the degree early or late etc etc. $100k is a decent estimate for the high end of average college ~debt~. Costs can go much much higher.
@carlthe1nonly960
@carlthe1nonly960 4 месяца назад
@@aidend8029 I didn't realise that your tuition was based on time. For me, the majority of the cost comes from the individual subjects I take. There is an amenities fee of about AU$350 a year but it's really a small component of my costs. My degree is expected to be 4 years but I could do it in about 3.5 if I pushed and a lot longer if I spaced it out. It wouldn't affect the cost too much. Could you save money by taking more classes at once?

Should you get a degree ? 100%, should you go in debt for the majority of your adult life for it ? absolutely not :x, seriously just go to college abroad at that point :/. Does the US have more "on-hands" college program (eg: you have school group project to deliver but also need to spend 50%+ of your time in a real company doing apprenticeship kind of stuff) ? Cause that's a much more desireable way for some jobs like Software engineer for example.
