Who was the King that Kvothe killed? In this video, I explore the evidence of Ambrose being the King or at least having close ties to the slain sovereign.
This video contains spoilers for The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.

Kvothe also renames his sword "caesura", which is a term from temerant's eld vintic poetry and describes "a break in the line". Given Pat's foreshadowing and Kvothe's unnatural knack for naming things, it does seem to imply that the king killed wll be the king of vintas.

Ok @strictly Fantasy, as I watched this video (long overdue for me to watch theories about KKC as I just started today and have read all the books almost a dozen times over the last 10 years), I got crazy goosebumps when you mentioned how the Ctheah killed 11 butterflies and how the Jakis line is 12th for the throne. I did not catch that while reading the books, and that seems INCREDIBLY solid. Well fucking done!

I wanted to add this as I've dedicated today to exploring and understanding the world of Kvothe, and all the hidden clues given to us. To support the argument that the falling of the wings of the butterflies represents death, if you turn to page 641 of The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe is able to trap Felurian, and realises he could kill her. He says: "I knew then that I could kill her. It would be as simple as throwing a sheet of paper to the wind. But the though sickened me, and I was reminded of ripping the wings from a butterfly." I think that's a pretty major hint!

I completely agree with you. Ambrose being the king and his death would be extremely satisfying considering what an awful person he is, despite whatever other catastrophes occur. Yes, I noticed that and think it would be great if that's a turn. If Jack the Luckless is the same as Jax, and Kvothe and Ambrose end up being descendants of the same line, it sort of raises the narrative from a collegiate rivalry to a bloodline feud. I need to read the books to be sure, but from what I've seen so far... I think Ambrose is more likely to have framed Kvothe for the murder of the king... that Ambrose actually had slain. Probably his own father. Kind of a final 'gotcha' between bitter rivals. One Kvothe would be pretty hard pressed to one up... or get away from.
@DiscreetStigma
@DiscreetStigma 4 года назад
I think Ambrose is a good fit and strong theory for who the King is. I lean more towards Sim though. Kote generally speaks of Sim in the past tense, as though he’s no longer living. Sim is also a poet. The king is referred to as the Penitent king, which you neglect in your video but its an important point. Sim’s brother went the religious route, and joined the church. I also believe that Sim comments on the fact that Ambrose won’t shut up about being 13 steps from the throne because Sim is actually closer to the throne, and just more humble about it. We get a hint about that when Sim and Kvothe argue over the Duke of Gibea. Sim comments on how close his family lands are to that. Honestly it makes me wonder if his family are in charge of the duchy currently, and they just moved the castle to get away from the horror of it. Those are some tinfoil theories of course. Loved the video I look forward to more.

Kvothe has told us that he has "stolen princesses from barrow kings", as well as told us that many refer to the archives as a "tomb" or "barrow". Many think that a barrow king (some kind of powerful being, most likely undead or necromantic in nature) is housed behind the four plate door in the stacks. I feel like this is the king in question and not Ambrose. We know that Kvothe had to kill a king to find his heart's desire (whatever lies in the possession/protection of this barrow king?) and fight an angel to keep it. Seeing as we know that he or Devi wants to use Auri's underthing to infiltrate the archives, I feel that after being expelled from the Arcanum (which we know will happen in the final book) he may betray Auri's trust, use the underthing to break back into the Arcanum's archives and breach the four plate door. This would all make more sense, I feel. There is a great video on this as well, I recommend it.

Ambrose’s part in the story is to make Kvothe stronger - his first adversary - who helps him grow. By breaking his lute string he ensures his pipes, by breaking his lute he helps him call the wind, by getting him banned from the library Kvothe has to find another way in - which will play a role in 3rd book, by forcing him from the University he goes on his long trip, by attacking him with a mommet he learns how to make a gram, etc. I don’t think Ambrose is the king to be killed though... The 3rd book will see a shift to Kvothe’s real adversaries.

So I think it's the king of vintas. The Maer mentioned about him allowing swords in court would be the death of him when he made kvothe stop wearing his. Kvothes sword meaning "break in the line" connect King of Vintas. Also if the King of Vintas is Vashet's "poet king", then the sword being "poet killer" also comes true. There are more possible clues that point to this. If you have any questions, just ask or need further explanation.

He shows up out of nowhere, plays Tak with Kvothe when he likes, comes and goes, seems to be very VERY strategic, teaches Kvothe about other people, and if you pay attention, no one ever mentions who he really is. Or did I miss something? My instinct tells me that Kvothe spoke too much while near him, playing Tak and trusting him, and if my memory doesn't fail me, even Kvothe mentions this while recalling those events.

The sword is both Saicere (to break, to fly, to catch) and, in Kvothe’s hands,Caesura (the Poet-Killer, the end of an Old Vintage line). Saicere will break, this is foreshadowed by Vashet making a face of dismay verging on horror when Kvothe asks what he should do if the sword breaks. Saicere will fly, catch, and kill Simmon. Fela in her grief summons the name of stone, shattering the cobblestones which kill King Roderick Calanthis. The sword thus kills the poet, Simmon, and ends the Calanthis line. Kvothe is assumed to be the Kingkiller

I love this theory! I have something that might add credibility to it: We've read the ring poems before and most people think that the poem refers to either A: the names Kvothe learns or B: I've read some good arguments for it being life events. But if your theory is true, then C: the rings might refer to people he had at his side during the conflict. I haven't deciphered them all yet, and we might not have met them yet. "With with a flaw within" could be Denna as represented by her blue ring. "Stone" could be Fella. "Amber" as suggested is power over demons so maybe its a reference to demon Devi, or a reference to when Will says he would like one. Fire could be Kilvin represented by his use of the "galvanic binding that creates fire when he slams his fists, or Elxa Dal who knows the name ect... I won't speculate on them all but I'd love to read other comments. I end this with a tantalizing thought: Think on the last ring: "One without a name". At the end of The Wise Man's Fears several of the Adem are very specific about keeping one's name secret, and to not attempt changes to a name when Kvothe gets his sword. Further Elodin is scared witless that Fella might have changed her name when Kvothe asks for lady advice about Denna. What if names can be changed, given, traded and lost.... Maybe Elodin has lost his secret name and he's the one that line refers to. Maybe it's one of the reasons a namer cracks. If like your theory suggests: Kvothe has allies in his battle against X, the rings could be the allies, not his own powers. Kvothe in his final big battle probably didn't fight alone, and Sim could have been there, Sim could be dead.

I think that it will be Ambrose’s father that kvothe kills. It seems like the kind of twist rothfuss would have in the story. If Ambrose’s father becomes king it could be mad considering there are suggestions that he is a mad man. Kvothe would face a dilemma, he should kill the mad king but I’m doing so he would give his biggest rival the throne. Just my thought and I’m not sure if I conveyed them clearly. Let me know if you agree

Sim and the parallels with Lanre. His girlfriend Fella is a good nominator like Lira. Sim with alchemy could paralyze a person's movements like Lanre did. Fella knows the name of the stone. What is the destroyed mosaic made of stone? It could be that Fella eliminated Ambrose and Kvothe took responsibility for this crime. Kvothe lies when he talks about the tragic end of his friends "that they deserved a better fate" this is to keep them safe, or not, maybe he took them to Fata and they lived and died there, but for Kvothe this was not what he wanted for them, so he speaks with regret because his friends are no longer dead a long time ago in fata.

i'm going out thre with the theory - as Kvothe is a 'Lackless' - presumably higher in king rankong lineage chart then ambrose's family -- is it possible that the 'King' that Kvothe ends up killing is -- well Himself -- possibly by destroying his own Name. or he has to destroy his own 'kingship' to prevent a worse disaster?

What would it take for Kvothe to end up king if his Lackless heritage is brought to light? Meluan is at least a suitable match for the Maer so its not that far fetched. He might need to "kill" himself in order to go into hiding as Kote. I think we need to remember not to be too literal with all of this and that the best lies/boasts about Kvothe are the ones he spread himself. You guys don't think Ambrose is entirely too obvious for Rothfuss?

I disagree completely, because if Ambrose was the king then the Chronicler, Bast and future Kvothe would have mentioned it in some way. The way Ambrose was introduced wasn't how you'd introduce someone who would become king.

In chapter Sixty of Wise Man's Fear Kvothe and the Maer are talking about the birds Kvothe uses to test the medicine on: “Sipquicks?” “Tiny, bright things, yellow and red,” I held up my fingers about two inches apart. “They’re thick in your gardens. They drink the nectar from your selas flowers.” “Oh. We call them flits.” And in chapter sixty four: “But it’s a little rough on the poor little calanthis.” “Beg pardon?” I asked. “Our Stapes is old-fashioned,” Alveron explained with a smile. “And more educated than he cares to admit. Calanthis is the Eld Vintic name for them.” “I could swear I’ve heard that word somewhere else.” “It’s also the surname of the royal line of Vintas,” Alveron said chidingly. Calanthis livery is red and gold.

This is way out there but without a 3rd book I got nothing but time to make up crazy theory's. What if Ambrose's family continues killing families in line for the throne and the Maer becomes king as Kvothe foiled that attempt. Eventually the Maer gets killed per the butterfly thing, and this sets off a civil war between the two families (one being being led by his Aunt the Lady Lochless the other by Ambrose ). The Poet Kvothe kills is sadly Sim in some tragic accidental way (sorry). The king he kills is the old Fae king CInder/ Master Ash/ Bredon (remember he did a bad turn to the tree once) and this sets off the current state of the Fae. In all ways Kvothe is responsible and showcases his folly. I actually think Ambrose lives at least in Kote's current timeline. That is why he is willing to give up his secret identity to not have the smith's apprentice take the kings coin.

I think it's rather obvious that the king Kvothe kills IF Kvothe actually kills a king and it isn't just a big misunderstanding, almost HAS to be a chandrian. SPOILER TURN BACK In book 2 we learned that the chandrian (or at least one of them) can appear normally and move about the eath like joe shmoe. One of them was right in front of Kvothe's face at the bandit camp but in that moment Kvothe felt he was familiar but couldn't quite put his finger on it.

HOLY HELL I FIGURED IT OUT!!! I KNOW WHO THE KILLED KING IS!!!!!!!! Firstly you gotta take into account Rothfuss's writing style. Almost every other is used as foreshadowing but in the most subtle of ways... it's almost like he's telling three or four stories with the same words. It reads like fine wine and every last syllable is relevant. Firstly I'd like to draw your attention to Skarpi's arrest. From that scene we learn that there isn't a separation of church and state. This implies that there is a public ruling class and a hidden one. Also the dockside pub is portrayed as a quiet tavern for workmen, not the sort of place I'd a) hide an informant, or b) expect to find a church toady that would run off to taddle over a story. That impression is further by the owner's reaction to the arrest, it isn't a place that sees a lot of officials. I'll admit that it could have been one of the other children talking at home that doesn't exactly fall in line with Rothfuss's style. I suspect that it foreshadowing a bombshell, the church is corrupt in the extreme. If you take into account the my prior points and take into account the bar is near a port, in an out of the way part of a major city, by a church (one that wouldn't have many people of consequence), it's a high official that makes the arrest, and most importantly of all the importance of names (and that they can be used to track people down) things get a little fishy. It seems to me that there must be come Chandrian involvement in the church. Now we already know that there isn't a separation of church and states. That means that if there is Chandrian involvement in the church then there must be involvement in high office. That would mean that the ruling elite are infact the Chandrian/individuals who are subservient to them. This would also be strengthened by Alveron being poisoned. He doesn't play ball and he is nearly autonomous. Maybe the deaths in high office aren't by the Jakis family, but by the Chandrian removing any opposition from behind the veil. I already have my suspicions that the Jackis family has some involvement with the Chandrian, but its far from certain. Its merely because Ambrose is at the university. I find it very suspicious that a nobleman's son would waist his time at the university. He comes from a VERY superstitious area too... I can't see how having a "sorcerer heir" would reflect well on the family. Plus his father fights to keep him in the university, despite Ambrose's messing about. I only ask to what end? There's a million and one explanations, but I'm inclined to believe it's in preparation for Ambrose to help with the hidden hand. Perhaps the butterflies do depict the people who are to die, but by Kvothe's hand. What I'm getting at is I suspect the ruling elite are infact the Chandrian. Kvothe uncovers this and is at least partially successful at eliminating them... I mean we've already seen how easily he infiltrated Alveron's estate. I mean hell he was able to get to his bed chamber without so much as a question, then escape without a fuss. May I also point out that was his first attempt too. AAAAAND hes getting more and more powerful by the day, hes on a trajectory that ends in near godhood. I believe that Kvothe will kill the current king, and if the rest of my assumptions are true then it could be none other than Cinder (and I'm fairly convinced of that). I suspect he will also end the Jakis line, and the Alveron will become the king. Now I'm purely guessing at this part but it flows true with the rest of my little theory here: I think Meluan Lackless is also involved with the Chandrian. It's only a guess, but if Alveron becomes king then Kvothe killing his wife is about the only thing I can think of that would be unforgivable. It would also make sense for Kvothe to kill most of the monarchs and actually leave Ambrose the king. We know that Kvothe kills someone outside the Eolian, could that have been papa Jackass... er. Baron Jakis?
