Yeah, he ment for those solders to robb Kvothe, but he still dispises them for hurting him and while Bast thought it would be worth it, his plan backfired and so they turned from an instrument for his means to enemies that harmed what was his! Also frustration that they failed . . . . He is fucked up

I think Bast might be the son of Kvothe and Felurian. I know Bast is suppose to be like 150 years old but considering how time passes differently in the Fae realm it might be that Bast spent his life there, and when he came into the human realm/Kvothe goes back to the Fae realm it only seems like a few years to Kvothe He shares a very clear resemblance to Felurian and respects, loves and is protective over Kvothe in a way I feel a child would be of their parents

But there is mention of Basts father in the books. His name was Remmin or something similar (I know, seems similar to Reshi). Also, Rothfuss said that we will meet Basts father in the doors of stone. But it is an intriguing theory

Kvothe did not raise him though, so love from that has to be discarded. Heroworshiping the guy who tricked your mom into allowing him to abandon her does not make sense either and it was made clear, that there was no love between felurian and kvothe. Bast is not fond of their reltionship, does not like it when she is mentioned in whatever context and choosing the absent father over the mother who raised you seams counterintuitiv to me. What would she have to tell Bast to make him idolise him? Kvothe had not doen anything all thet impressiv at that time, they did not knew eachother well and telling your child how you thought their other parent how to bang . . . it just does not work in my eyes

I really like the story arc between Bast and Chronicler while Bast has tricked then later forced Chronicler to do his bidding in gathering Kvorhes story he has also given him the story he has always longed to collect and like all other characters in the books the back and forth conversations are fantastic between the two.

Bast does not simply care deeply for Kvothe, he is very protective and even posessiv of him, I am so courious what their background is and if we ever get a translation to reshi. From the context we assume it means something like teacher, but we realy do not know and it could be quite a reviel

I think it's the card game that revealed he is called the twilight prince. Felruian is referred to as the twilight lady. Seems like he might be his son.

@@CobaltContrast Does not feel right to me, but it is a commen theory. "Twilight" seams to me not like an exclusiv tital and more generelly imply fae or fea realm but we do not really know enough about the fae. Maybe it is a rank for humanoid fae of higher standing? Maybe it is a category of fae or ones commeing from a certrain region? It does not ping me as a hereditary tital. What throwes me of from thinking Bast as Kvothes son is for one their lack of age diffrence, fae are weird in that regard, but I would reather suspect them ageing slower, than faster. Kvothe is still very young, despite acting all old and grizzeled, there are simply to many years to breach as that my mind gives it a pass there. The other thing is, Felurian really does not ping my like the kind of mother who tells her child about how great their daddy is to get them all hyped up and growing up in awe of him. "Yeah, you know? The almost kid I slept with and who decided to leave me? He was very reckless and very stupid and he never even send me a letter . . . " The things he did before meeting Felurian are not that exceptional so she would not have much to tell about him, beside how she slept with him . . . So no I do not think, that Basts adoration for Kvothe comes from him being his father. I reather suspect it must have been how they met, that started his obcession. Maybe I am wrong there, I do see why it is a theory and just cause I would not write it like that does not mean, that it was not what the author intended. They do have a somewhat parental relationship with Kvothe teaching Bast so yeah, the theory is valid, I am just really not a fan of the how I met your mother aspect

Kvothe cannot reclaim is old self until he casts away his new taken name; Kote. Recall when Master Namer Elodin answers Kvothes question about Why a woman would taken on a new name; his response is telling. He's scandalized, he thought the woman was Fella, and says something like "Why would a namer do that" and implies she would be foolish to do that. Obviously there are some very poor effects to taking on a new name for a namer. The name Kote is blocking Kvothes power.

I always figured it was part of the curse of three parts from killing Cinder. I never considered it being self imposed to protect others. Maybe he's doing it to avoid doing what the Cthae wants.

to get Bast one absolutly has to read the lightning tree!!! You get so much about him out of it. It is narrated from his perspectiv, explains a lo about the fae and how he thinks. It is an absolutly delightful novella that adds so many layers in just the span of a day.

I have bad news for you. A month ago or so, the publisher of the books went on a rant on facebook saying she hasn't read a single word of book 3 and she doesn't even know if Rothfuss has written at all in the past 6 years (since Slow Regard was published). Since then, Rothfuss has gone full on radio silence.

I think bast plan is back firing on him. The screal and the skin dancer, where not supposed to show up. Just the chronicler and the robbing soldier's. But once knowledge is out there who knows who will pick it up.

BAST plan is working even old enemys might show up and that might force Kvothe out of his bubble to fight old enemys. And it almost actually worked with thouse soldiers. Kvothe handled them well until One of soldiet sayd Whe the hel lthink you are and that made Kvothe remember he just a innkeeper not a hero.

I also have suspicions that Kvothe might be Bast’s father... we don’t know if he will return to the Fae realm in DoS and time works differently there, so he might well gain another name and or title there and sire bast? Maybe this even has something to do with his name changing and losing power... he could have done this and returned and it might help explain how he’s had such a huge effect on the world but still appears to be quite young? Who knows 🤷‍♀️ I love your videos, they’re extremely captivating and help to occupy my brain between re-reads/listenings. ❤️👍🙌

@@tarancehill651 trying to make up for it? not sure really. I am of the conviction, that Bast does deeply care for Kvothe, but his prioreties and how he tries to acomplish things are fucked up. There might have been an accident . . .

I want to agree, but Bast took as much responsibility as he could for what he did with the soldiers. He sacrificed his own tooth (or oral health in some way, idk) to save Kote's, via his fancy Fae magic or some such. And he ended up taking revenge on the soldiers (presumably - it isn't *explicitly* stated as such) for doing such harm to him. Bast said it best himself, though, I think. "My kind aren't known for making the best decisions" or something to that effect. Bast has a hard time foreseeing possibilities that he doesn't want to foresee. Much like Kvothe as you mentioned early on. He has reckless tendencies, sure.. But I believe he is a quick learner where specific instances are concerned. I'm very interested to see how he tries to manipulate Kote into becoming Kvothe again in the next books. (I refuse to believe that even Pat can cleanly wrap everything up in a single, final book....)

Yes I feel much the same. Bast is one of my least favorite characters for some of the reasons you mentioned toward the end of the video. He's rather unhinged and childish (which now that you mention it is rather like Felurian) but I digress. I suspect your prediction for how the Doors of Stone might go in regards to their friendship is pretty spot on. I'd like to hear how they met, too! So many questions around Bast. Thanks for these videos!

@@warrenwise8798 I would say Book 1 is definitely self-contained and very much worth reading. Book 2 I don't think that's the case. Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully written, but I was disappointed with it as I didn't feel like we had advanced with Kvothe's story. That's just my opinion though.

Bast and Kvothe share a lot of traits and his clear adoration and heroworship combined with his childish nature . . . Yeah, I get why people thing he is his son . . . But I am not realy convinced, something is up, but I am not sure what . . . Maybe it is the other way around? Could be Bast an ancestor? . . . . Kvothe has so many fae traits . . . .but that would be very wierd I realy have no real clue and pray we will get a translation of reshi someday. We concluded it means teacher, but we realy do not know

If they calculate time by Moon movements then in fae realm moon is seen much less than human world and that might mean he is 150 years old in fae time but few years old in human time. Couse for Kvothe it seemd like he was away for months in fae workd but in real world he was away for 3 days.

Great video, but I feel many characteristics of bast are of the fae in general. As in why you said he was dangerous. It’s because he’s from the fae, not cause he’s bast.

It is a typical fae depiction, Kvothe astonishingly closely resables himself. Passionate, beautiful, alureing, talented, tempramental, posessiv, rash, singelminded, ruthless . . . .

Do not mistake Bast for his mask. You see light dappling on the water and forget the deep, dark cold beneath. You are not wise enough to fear him as he should be feared. - paraphrased from Bast himself. Is it because he is fae, or because he chooses? Auri may be one of the original shapers(probably not), however when Auri “brought the weight of her desire down full upon the world. And all things shook. And all things knew her will. And all things bent to please her. Perhaps Auri and Bast both know no bounds when it comes to protecting Kvothe.

true, also peole like to aquade him being dangerous with him being devoid of sympathy which simply is not true, yes his morals do not uphold to human expectations, but he is not human so why should they and he does display acts of selflessness and compassion. Healing Kvothe buy hurting himself was not needed, it did not further his goal of reawakening who he had been, simply his desire to see Kvothe free of pain outweighted his desire to be himself free of pain. Also everything about the lightning tree!

Not to sound fangirly but maybe Bast reacts so desperately to the revelation of Kvothe's talk with the Cthae and lashes out at the soldiers because the nature of his feelings for Kvothe is different from friendship. I am not saying that they are a couple of some sort but why should Bast not be in love with Kvothe and therfore miserable himself watching Kvothe suffer. I mean, if Bast was female we would probably assume some sort of romantic feelings. Anyway, I still love your analysis of the more dark aspects of Bast's personality.

@@bobisu3111 Maybe but I think that's unlikely because the dynamic Felurian and Kvothe was already that of a teacher and scholar of some sorts. I don't think that Felurian has anything to learn from Kvothe. Also, she doesn't have any goat-like features.

I think it's entirely possible. As I was rereading some of the chapters with Bast, I did notice certain interactions that went beyond friendship (i.e. Bast caressing Kvothe's face and watching his breathing while he sleeps).

Rothfuss wrote a short story called "The Lightning Tree," which appears in the anthology "Rogues" and chronicles (heh) a day in the life of Bast at the inn. I've never read it myself but perhaps some of the information presented in the video is pulled from that story (if I would've watched the whole video before replying I would know that this was mentioned ha).

@saursoar Along with my physical copies of the books, I also have the books on Kindle, so I can quickly refer to a particular chapter or page for reference. Basically, I get most of my info from the books themselves, theories on Reddit and Wikipedia and condense that research into a script.

The card game named him Prince of Twilight and Felurian is named Twilight Lady. So clearly he's the son of Felurian.

Right but what if Kvothe is trying to throw people off the trail by introducing him as somebody else's son? I don't think that is a strong enough argument against the Papa Kvothe theory given that half of what they are doing at the Waystone is an act. Btw your videos are among the best. Great vocal delivery and content!

I don't belive in the bast is kvothes son theory. It would make this whole thing so weird and does not actualy explain their bond thinking about it. Firstly, it would make Kvothes retelling of Felurian a not very flattering "how I met your mother" scenario. If all there is to basts adoration towords Kvothe is him being his father that would be kinda flat and boring and just why would it make him look up to Kvothe? Did Felurian tell him storys about him? "You know, this almost kid I slept with and who dared to leave me? He never even wrote me a letter afterwords . . . " Kvothe was so very young then and had not done much yet especialy going with fae standarts, so she would not have had much to tell abot him beside how she slept with him . . . . . not quite the material to inspire heroworship

You actually pronounced Kvothe right. You're the only other person I've seen say it right. Most say Kuothe or Kothe. I've never Heard Kvother from anyone but Nick podehl and Patrick.

I think Bast may be related to Felurian, but doubtful he’s Kvothe’s son. Yes, time runs differently in the Fae, but Bast is apparently 150 years old already... hard to bridge that gap.

there is almost a 10 year gap between kvothe and felurian and the current time. 10 years is worth at least 300 year in the fae realm

agree, that theory really does not axplain anything if one starts to properly think about it. Firstly, it would turn Kvothes retelling of meeting Felurian into "how I met your mother" . . . secondly it would feel like a cheap excuse for their relationship. How exactly would Kvothe being his father make sense of Basts heroworship for him? He did not raise him and just what would Felurian have told him? "You know, this almost kid I slept with and who decided to leave me? He never even wrote me a letter afterwords." Kvothe had not really done much of his heroics yet and mostly she could have told how she slept with him, that is not quite heroworship material there . . .

@@LorewalkerTheo Thanks ^^. oh I was looking for someone who could explain why they think that Bast is his son and discuss how that would make sense. I am usualy less interested in who/what ends up being right and more in the why and how people think.
