I think that the Ardem attitude towards music and loud voices is largely due to the fact that ardemra is a windy country and shouting becomes not only a waste of time but eventually secondary to physical closeness and the motions of the hands. Add that to the likelihood of being able to get an emotional expression across while the wind is in your face and hair and the whole thing falls into place.

The other explanation i liked is that the Adem and Ruh both value sound, but treasure it in different ways. The Adem find it precious. It is something to be treasured, protected, and kept private. The Ruh find it wonderful. It is something to be shared with all.

I like the possibility of all these things. I had thought the the Ruh and the Adem were the same, just polar opposites . The Ruh are in complete control of themselves, and totally expressive. The Adem while in total control, their expression takes the form of extreme will to action. I think at one time, maybe the two groups were of one family.

I am calling it. The Edema Ruh/Adem are the exiled Knowers from the Creation War. The Lethani is both descriptive and prescriptive. It is the one story all others are a piece of. The Adem are fixed on knowing the Lethani. Knowing the Lethani is keeping and learning from History. The Edema Ruh, perhaps, began as teachers who taught the Lethani (that is, recited history and moral lessons) through plays. The Amyr and Adem are closely related. The Amyr follow/embody the Lethani. Think of the Lethani as stage direction and performance. Skill relies on both propositions (linguistically and imagistically* encoded?) and sensorimotor articulations**... *Kvothe sang colours to a blind man. Perhaps Yllish knots are trace back to Ergen and are akin to Sygaldry, but they make states of affairs/stories true/happen for being proposed in knot form. **Consider that actual sensorimotor articulations and imagined sensorimotor articulations activate identical brain regions; the same is true of imagine speech and real speech, if I am not mistaken...

The idea that the Adem don't know how human procreation works is just insane to me. Just breaks my suspension of disbelief.
@jschoma11
@jschoma11 4 года назад
Not my theory and I apologize to whoever came up with it but I once saw an explanation that works. Basically Adem women who are actively serving dont become pregnant and it's not until they retire that they can have children, right? There is a real world condition called athletic amenorrhea. Essentially if a womans body fat is below a certain level ovulation does not occur and therefore no pregnancy. The body "decides" for lack of a better term that there isnt enough spare fuel to carry out a pregnancy. Adem warriors are said to be EXTREMELY fit with the women being the pinnacle. This satisfies things physiologically and also aligns with the Adem belief that a woman wont become pregnant until she chooses/is ready/retires. It bothered me so much that the Adem seem so wise yet they have this one belief about procreation I just could not wrap my head around.

@@jschoma11 yeach but they are not fittnes Masters, they are warriors, if they fat in the body would be that low, they would be usless on the battlefield, becouse they would simply faint. The warriors NEED fat, not only for the organism to works, but also for the long journeys. The person with a Little bit of fat can survive longer than a "fit" person, becouse... Guess this for yourself. Edit: For example look at the culturist. They have so Little fat during contest, that they are on the verge of fainting.
@Lennie3012

I believe there may be something we don't know about yet (physical, magical, dietary, genetic) that causes their women to either miscarry early in the pregnancy so they don't know about it or causes them to ovulate only very rarely. Something like this could explain their attitudes toward sex. If they struggle to have babies then they will have alot of sex to compensate. Soon they are having sex with lots of people. A few generations later you have a culture that has forgotten what sex is actually for and is just a pastime with no consequence for either party. Our culture figured out what sex meant before we knew the science of it because we saw the cause and effect. Now imagine a woman who has had sex once a week in the past decade with nothing happening now suddenly she is pregnant. They won't make the connection that it's because she had sex. The "Anger" is a remnant of the past knowledge that a woman needs a man to make babies, but it is so lost in their philosophy that they have forgotten the actual cause.

"One side valued strict teachings of discipline and control, whereas the other puts a high emphasis on public displays of affection, music and passion." "In fact, the need for the Adem to hide their emotions may stem from the teachings of the lethani." "According to Skarpi, it was Lanre's grief for the death of his wife, Lyra, that drove him to reek havoc apone the world. Such passion is dangerous, especially when couples with extreme power."
@bowow0807
@bowow0807 3 года назад
Bit of a correction when you talked about the Adem calling singing Taboo. It's not in fact, but singing is viewed to the Adem as the rest of the world viewed sex. This was even mentioned by Vashet when she asked Kvothe what he did when she inspected his hands. She laughed and called him a "whore" which confused Kvothe. For the Adem, someone's voice and facial expression and even more so emotional expression are the most intimate things one can share in their culture. And what is the one medium that can evoke great emotion in the setting? Music and song. To the Adem, singing and playing music publicly is akin to someone in the rest of the world stripping down and having sex in public. Vashet even said (not the exact quote, but close) "We do not sing, only when two are very much in love and very much alone" It's like a very religiously conservative person talking about sex after marriage, though I don't recall the Adem having any official ties for marriage, but that's basically how they view music, not that it's dirty or taboo, but an expression of the deepest intimacy only to be shared among very close loved ones.

It could be that the third group of the ruach were tasked with spreading the knowledge of what had happened and ensuring it never died. The edema are tellers of stories, passing on legends to all people of the land, while the Adem are guardians of ancient secrets. This could be another reason for why they split, disagreement on what to do with their knowledge.

I think the Aden’s curious take on reproduction or creation comes from an ancient understanding or schism between the makers and the seers. People get confused by the "There were seven cities and one city" and all that jazz. As far as I understand there was Lanre who tried to convince 7 others to betray the Ergen empire but 1 of them didn't, making the Chandrian Lanre + 6. But regarding the skin dancers theory, I personally think Lanre was so desperate he went to the doors of stone and somehow allowed Iax (who I'm thinking was a skin dancer) inside him, that's why Lanre went from no naming prowess to being able to bound Selitos for days. That and the idea that Haliax means breath of Iax, as in Iax is the one talking (using naming) though him.
