Before your niece started podcasting about lip liner and cheek shadow there was The Art of Manliness (AoM). With a 4.7star Apple Podcast ranking spread across 13,000-odd votes it's fair to say Brett McKay, supported by his wife Kate, have brought the concept of 'what it means to be a man' a long way from its 'fun hobby' origins.
AoM eventually spawned The Strenuous Life (TSL) - keep the notebook handy, we're building up a lot of acronyms here. Brett accurately describes the program through his opening line in the TSL handbook "...the antidote to the feelings of malaise that pervade our modern society." It's akin to getting off the train tracks of sameness and tests mental, physical and spiritual aptitude. Think boy scouts for men just without the Scout Hall and khaki shorts (no wait, hang on, they are included).
The program includes two core themes a 'Weekly Agon' (Ancient Greek for challenge) and fifty-five badges to select from. The Knotsmanship Badge requires the tying of nine knots, three lashings and a rope whip 'n' fuse, without reference to references. This video is not meant to be educational, there are plenty of good folk on RU-vid already lassoing these topics together, some of which are listed below.
