It really saddens me to see people disrespect this timeless band giving a great performance. They aren't a festival or arena kind of band in my opinion but neither were bands like the beatles or the kinks. Lee doesn't give a fuck about looking pretty for the cameras and he never did, which is one of the many reasons their music rings so true. They're about the music not about trying to look good. Love to the La's!
One of the greatest songwriters of all time. He didn't get on with the music industry and for some (non-thinking) people that means that he didn't "fulfill his potential" - as if an artist's worth is measured in their willingness to play the game. Lee has achieved his creative potential. I hope to meet him one day!
Idk man.. He's def showed he is capable, and doesn't owe anyone a thing. But at the same time, all the greats played the game (lennon, dylan, harrison, etc.) until they had the influence to change it. Seems like Lee was knocking on that door then kinda vanished. Still one of my fav albums tho!!
@@jcb88ify you're right. quite an insightful comment. "playing along until you're strong enough to change the game". that's what the masters have always done. no one ever triumphed through presumptuous denial or mindless rejection. one always has to play and do what one must do and DO IT WELL.
Ighalo was signed for Man Utd from China after his sister prayed every day for 10 years that he would play for them. Maybe we should pray for more La's activity.
Do you have any idea how much effort Matthers puts into his music ? He never finished recording their album the record company just released it as it was taking to long . He would of rehearsed fir this gig obsessively for hours and hours , so it certainly isn’t natural
Fabulous band! First-time we head them was in London in the 80s..as the only liverbird around I new the name La. As musicians they are still a fabulous inspiration! ORGONE BOX x
@@dougreed2257 measuring an artist by their willingness to mass produce is stupid as fuck. Man wanted to improve on the album his whole life, if that doesnt prove he cares about his art more than most “legends” then idk what does
@@conradrayner6317 nah its not that stupid, granted its not the absolute, but he's often cited as "genius", geniuses would produce more than one product, I don't personally believe he's a genius, he's a very good songwriter, who produced 1 pretty good album,, the propaganda of his 1 only release is what makes his "legend" and him being somewhat of a "hermit" at the end of the day, if you think he's the dogs b******sthen that's all that matters to you, happy listening! 🎶👍
@@CasperLD it obviously is to you, and that what counts! Some people don't think love's "forever changes" is a masterpiece, and I think they are crazy, or like me with the La's album they think "forever changes" is OK or pretty good" so I know where you are comin' from!
Saw the las at elland road - insane song writing talent. So so tight as a band. First gig I ever went to. I was 13 Made me nostalgic for an eta I didn’t live through. So incredible. The absolute inspiration for Brit pop - despite the fact I hated Brit pop. This felt endlessly authentic
ahhh, back when phone cameras just came out. Sad that kids these days won't see a time like this again, where people danced and clapped along to live music mostly instead of constantly through a lense
He was generous with his time. He didn’t have to do it. Maybe in the end the fact they only played 20 songs over & over became charming. Lee Mavers could have written far more but something stopped him. There are dozens of fragments around the net & all sound excellent. A flawed genius for sure. I like him.
Jay Lewis is great on guitar and full of energy. Lee still has it! Looks cool in purple light. Good to see them together again, even for just a while. Nice crowd, lucky them.
Thanks for the upload. Was so glad I was able to see them at T in the Park this day. But they were on stupid early in the day. Sure it was second or third on the NME stage. Back when T in the Park was the best festival in Britain.
Nothing against Sixpence, but The La's rule on "There She Goes."It's their flagship song, to be sure. anyway. Timeless Melody is great. THANK YOU LA'S , you've made our lives better with your music. I hope you do a new album sometime,...we'll be waiting. God bless ya's from Minnesota USA.
Used to cover these guys in my college band in the early 90’s, still one of my favorite bands. I will never understand why they didn’t put out a second album.
Yet another instance of a tortured artist. Reportedly he's a perfectionist, too difficult to work with. He spent years trying to record again his one and only album of which he wasn't satisfied. Among the most remarkably wasted geniuses.
I have so much to say that will be hammered! I was very emotional watching this....The La's were up there with the best of Manchester! Write some more songs... please!
he said 'were up there with the best of Manchester!', i did love the album, i think Lee struggled in studios, never happy with the sounds compared to live.
What happened Lee? You were the guiding light for rock n roll post The Smiths. The La's piss all over the bands that came in their wake. Their music is and always was timeless and perfect. Lee Mavers could have been my generations Dylan for sure, he had that much talent and was so driven by his own vision. I hope you are a content and happy man Lee wherever you are and whatever you are doing. You wrote the soundtrack to my late teens, and that's good enough for me.
A great performance at a great venue. The Balado years of T in the Park were the best. My favourite being the day The Strokes played on main stage and hot air balloons were flying across the skies. Maybe that was the mushies...
Mavers artistic integrity and ear for music is what made him great, but was also his undoing. Even the most eccentric artists play by certain rules till they’re big enough to break them
Was that 1991? I was at the lights at Masons Hill in Bromley in my utterly knackered Escort II estate & it came over the radio. I was numb. Didn’t like her. Knew nothing else. She’d been in power since I was a teenager.
I think this band is awesome; and many dont make it to this level. Very few bands become rich and lucky some can at least get a house of all this. For some reason they are interesting like the Housemartins and Supergrass. Good sound.
Being from America, I'm not hip to the La's, except for the hit the hit Sixpence None the Richer had covering them, but they're really good. That first tune, w/the bluesy soundin' electric guitar licks, that was tuff!
It's a really interesting point. So few get anywhere near perfection, so they keep trying and they keep boring us to death. Pop music's a pretty limited form though and there really is a limit to genius within it. The Beatles had 8 years. After they split, there were a few brilliant solo moments but nothing anywhere near their collective form. I think Bowie had 13 years (1967-80). After that, the same scenario, a few gems here and there but most of it far from his peak. Nick Drake's interesting: 3 albums, all pretty much flawless but where could he have gone after that? I think he reached his (artistic) goal. Likewise the Las. Though I'd still love to hear more from them, even if it was subpar!
I beg to differ, Mavers and Co. look pretty fresh for their age. I mean they're in their 40's right? I'm not far behind and I'm more geezer than them for sure! Hahaha. Great band and great songs, please do more stuff in the future Lee....
Despite the band's bad-mouthing, at least Lilywhite saved the brilliant There She Goes by keeping Power's "calls my name" vocals low in the mix at the end.
How can you wrong The La’s? I seen them in Belfast and Dublin on this tour, fucking wiped the floor with any other band during the festival season in 2005.
He was just warming up here after painful dental surgery. This is the best show of their tour that year: Fantastic!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DBGbXIuMSKk.html
I was there. I lstened intently as it was pure magic which is what everyone was thinking. Arent we lucky to see the La's. I am not sure if it was a secret gig as we just heard a murmur the Las are playing and everyone flocked over to that stage
I think Oasis were better. The LA's album is great and There she goes is probably my favourite song lol. But Oasis have made like 2 great albums of songs and many more great songs over the years
@@bowches I respectfully disagree. The La's were untouchable, it's just a shame Lee had musical OCD in the recording studio as they should have made 5 albums at least.
Lee Mavers was a genius. The La's had a genius album, that Lee wasn't satisfied with. As far as i could tell he couldn't give a shit about fame, dont blame him. I know folk from Uni who would see him in house parties killing it on guitar, seen those vids & it's true. But respect the artist, nt all about the coin.
Man, the drugs really took a toll on his face. I never saw the LAs live but honestly I think their sound was suited to small clubs rather than festivals or stadiums, it's understandable how they struggled for so long and tried with so many producers to find the right album sound.
BUILT TO BREAK can't go wrong with small amps wound up to fuck, great sound! Doesn't kill the singer and the PA can carry it all volume wise, also the sound man will LOVE YOU! Haha! And yeah, portable is always good, it's the punk ethic writ large.
