To be honest, as the description states, 5 stars in EZA is considered Masterful, and not Perfect. What I like about this system is that it recognizes that imperfections can be a part of a great game without overshadowing its bests qualities.

Everyone, Bloodworth gave this game 5 stars. Remember the only other game he has given a perfect score to is F Zero GX on the Gamecube. This is a big deal.

Easy Allies deserve at least 1 million subscribers. I mean c'mon people, these are the Gametrailers guys!!!

Honestly, this is by far the best review I have seen of this game. Not because of the final score, but because of what is actually being said. Daniel Bloodworth is a worthy addition to the game reviewing world. Also, great footage editing, great mix. Good job guys.

The comment section is filled with so much hateful people who are just begging for a reason to hate this game. They just don't get why a game like this is so highly rated. And sadly, it seems like they never will.

Unfortunately it seems this game went very underappreciated to many other than a passionate few who truly stuck it through to the end, It has one of The best Musical Scores of the Generation and one of the most moving endings but most people saw the game through the lens of RU-vidrs and Streamers that just berated everything in an attempt to be entertaining. Fumito Ueda is forever solidified as one of my favorite developers.

The relationship between the player and Trico is unlike anything I've played in a video game. The reviews have been divisive but even with its technical shortcomings, this game is a work of art.

So many people having differing opinions. Means it's probably a good game.

If Blood says it's this good, this personally memorable, that's the highest honor I can think of. Blood has great taste and I buy games for the experience (I know, gross, "experience": but it's true). After watching IGN's review I was scared, but my resolve has returned after watching a few other video reviews; particularly this one. Great review Blood. Not perfect but unforgettably masterful.

I get that people call shenanigans on them giving it a 5 out of 5 after saying it isn't perfect. But that is why these guys are one of my go to reviewers. They rate their games on about the same things I do. If the overall experience was amazing, despite its shortcomings, It still deserves a great score from me.

You guys are the best! Even back in the day at Gametrailers, I've always agreed with your reviews. Your whole team feels like real gamers, and I get a genuine feeling of knowledge and passion from your team when it comes to games. Keep up the great work!

Gametrailers reviews were some of the best in the entire industry to me. To the point that they were one of the few reviewers I trusted in order to get a good sense of a game. In the end the decision is up to me whether to buy a game or not, but reviews in general can give you a great sense of a games worth and if it is something you would enjoy. Now with Easy Allies pretty much being the Gametrailers guys, I feel the same way as I did with Gametrailers. I value their opinion and insight. I always intended to get The Last Guardian no matter what, seeing that I'm a Team ICO fan, but to see guys I respect and look up to think that the game is brilliant, it just goes to show why they are one of the few that I trust. They feel the same way I feel about gaming most of the time.

It's weird to see people are so forgiving towards clunky controls, camera issues and technical malfunctions. I've read a lot of comments of people saying; 'Well, that's just their style. Obviously you haven't played Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, they had the same thing.' It's not 2005 anymore. These problems should not have happened with this game. Especially from Team Ico where Fumito Ueda takes pride in artistical value. Any artist will always look for topping and improving that which has already been made. Gameplay, not story or atmosphere or graphics, is the basis of video games and thus these things should have been non-issues considering Ico and SotC. Despite the glowing reviews of journalists being content with a lesser game, something clearly went very wrong during development (and I'm not talking about the 10 year production time). Looking past the flaws this game has is selling the developers short. No artist would ever be satisfied with releasing something that has these flaws and I feel disregarding them as 'minor' is disrespectful towards such a unique developer. In my opinion, the final verdict should have reflected this.

From just your review, it seems like the controls and camera are a part of the experience. Since your playing a child, the way he runs and controls seems correct for the story and since your going through narrow corridors with a giant animal, the camera having to adjust to the big furry creature in the way a lot seems to be intentional too.. Can't wait to play it for myself and see how much that's the case.

In an age where hand holding, dlc stuff, microtransactions, 4k resolution, amazing high end graphics /gameplay etc, comes this filled with pure emotions and an oustanding story to remind us why we miss these kind of games from today's gaming industry. Yes, it may not be perfect in any way but who cares? The game came out after 10 long years of development and the only thing we do instead is complain why its not so long or why it got 83 on metacritic. I mean really, and we want to call ourselves gamers? Just enjoy what we've got, its probably the last game of its generation. Thank you Ueda!!! Noticing a worrying trend of anytime channels give their equivilents of 4.5/5 or 5/5 to a game all the comments are 'this is the only good review on youtube' and when people give out 3s it's 'this is fucking bullshit fuck this website for not justifying my purchase

Fumito Ueda is truly a video game auteur and his trilogy of games is proof of that. He's comparable to someone like Tarkovsky in terms of film directors.

to the people who complains about the score when it has some flaws: A game doesnt need to be perfect to get a score of 5/5 . Its about how the game's vision was executed and how the creator of the game wanted you to experience the game . If u dont like well crafted worlds with meaningful/emotional story , then this game isnt for you .

Nice to see my favorite outlet understand that technical flaws (especially those as minor as those I experienced thus far in the game) don't detract from the overall enjoyment one can get from a game. Even better to see them acknowledge the fact that sometimes Trico won't listen as a feature (if an annoying one) and not a bug. Was very sad to see certain reviewers (even Jim Sterling who I'm normally a fan of) not be able to distinguish between them doing it wrong and the beast not listening. Every time it seemed like Trico just straight up wasn't listening for long stretches of time, I've ended up realizing that I was in the wrong place or issuing the wrong command. Can't blame the game for that...

I think that the 5/5 score is a bit too much since the game have several issues, but I'm glad that this game deserve to be in the same family of ICO and SOTC.

I love all of Mr. Ueda's work, but I wish I could have felt a bit less disturbed while enjoying Trico's presence and the enviroment. Just finished the game. It's fascinating how all the flaws of the game slowly disapears as you advance through the end of the story. THIS is a game made with passion, very rare these days.

Nearing the end of this game, absolutely amazing. I didn't feel anything for Trico at the start, now i almost shed a tear every time it gets hurt.

5 stars doesn't mean perfect, it means masterful as stated below the score. People should really stop focusing on the score and more on the actual content of the review.

Loved this game, loved every single second of it. I don't mind the clunky controls and finicky camera. The feeling of a bond between myself and Trico was so masterfully built up over the game, by the end my heart was aching at what I was seeing and experiencing. I'll still get a little chocked up now when I think about it. But this is what I expected from Ueda, I knew my heart would be touched and it did not disappoint in the slightest. I adore this game and I'm SO glad I was able to experience it. ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and now The Last Guardian... I'm in awe of the masterwork of Ueda and his team. I adore them and I just love this game to death. In the age of throw away entertainment and games that only exist to take the money from my wallet it's such a joy that a game like this could still be made. Thank you, Mr. Ueda.

While I not always agree with you guys, I have to say, it was a fantastic review. This video truly shows how passionate about videogames you guys are, which is rare. I almost always thought I'm the last one of my kind, but it's fully clear now that you guys are just as hardcore gamers too (who played and know tons of games, appreciate great works, etc.).The interesting thing is that IGN gave the game a 7/10, and the negatives they came up with was the same as EaZ mentoined (sometimes bad camera, framerate-drops, sometimes hard to control Trico). The reviewer whined like a little bitch who, and how these problems basically killed the experience for him. I know, it's a stretch a little bit, but you get my point.No game is perfect. The games are we consider "perfect" are the games who have a lot of great, memorable moments, and the good stuff outeeights any bad stuff and problem in them. The Last Guardian is that kind of game. Although it has some problems, the experience you will get from it will make you forget those little problems it has - at least that's what I assume.The main difference is I can see the passion of hardcore gamers in EaZ's review, while I can't see it in IGN's.But IGN is like the yellow-media anyway. They did so much bad reviews I can't even count them.

Daniel Bloodworth gave a game a perfect score. Now I've seen it all. I'm in awe. Framerate drops? Sometimes clunky controls/camera? I certainly don't care about that.

To those complaining about the score; Shadow of the Colossus wasn't a perfect game either. But time has clearly proven that a game doesn't need to be perfect to be one of the greatest gaming experiences available still today. This review acknowledges these faults, while the score tells you to look past them anyway, for an experience that absolutely can not be missed.

My God, Blood gave it a 5. Never thought we would see the day when Blood gives a game a perfect score. Cannot wait to play this game as well. I think I'm going to wait until my Christmas break starts to dive in. Jolly game in a jolly time of year. Love & Respect.

For those concerned about the 5 stars despite some issues: hearken back to the GT days. If you remember their reviews at GT, it became kind of a running joke how granular their scores were. 9.8 was effectively the highest they ever gave anything. 9.2 meant something different from 9.1, and 8.5 was a world away. I like the new system, because it accepts that 5 stars isn't perfect by any means, and it forces the reviewer to confront the game in much broader strokes. Bloodworth thought this game was masterful in spite of its framerate issues - and that says a lot, for those of us who knows Bloodworth's normal reservedness when it comes to reviews.

It's kind of hard to believe this game is finally out, and I'm watching a review for it.

I just finished playing this game a day ago. I wanted to finish the game before watching any reviews so as not to spoil anything for myself. I agree with review 100%. This game is a masterpiece. In the beginning of the game as you and Trico are trying to build a bond, he is probably the most frustrating companion of any game. I tell him to go one way, he goes the other. Yet, as the game progresses, you can't help but build a strong understanding of each other. And by the end, you two are a well oiled machine. This game, minus a few flaws here and there (frame rate dips pretty hard in certain areas, and game does a terrible job explaining how to interact with Trico), this game is a damn masterpiece.

Hi guys, this is not a 5 stars game by any stretch of imagination. I have played for 5 hours and I am having issues with the camera. Sometimes, Trico doen't do what I want, for example I know how to resolve a puzzle but I have to deal with it instead, Is it fun? NO. Don't get me wrong, great game but not a 5 stars game.

People need to understand that review scores are always personal. If your interpretation of the review is that the game is at max a 4/5 then that's OK. But for someone (the reviewer) who has experienced Ico and Shadows of the Colossus with similar issues and still hold them as one of the greatest games made then those flaws are easily overlooked and still make it a masterful game.

Can't say how sad I was after finding out that GT shut down and how happy I was when I recognized that voice in the review. You guys have always influenced me on what game to play and what to expect and you'll get my full support to become at least as successful on your new platform as you were with GT. Personally, this game is technically marvelous although there are camera angle issues. The technical feat of this game is not just about the most organic real time interactive animated creature created but the accomplishment of creating seamless transitions between scripted and unscripted playable or non-playable sequences within the same physics base 3D engine. One example is the cage rolling sequences with the kid inside a cage - it is a mixed of scripted, unscripted, playable and non-playable sequences and they all melted together perfectly in real time within the same 3D engine environment without the need of a separated graphics rendering for the scripted sequences like those in Uncharted, Tomb Raider or God of War - I am not talking about the separately rendered non-playable "cut scenes". It would be nice if the developer was able to provide a zoom out control together with transparent wall features. When close-up camera angle issues occur, players are able to zoom out and rotate in the situation of Trico body blocking view or see through wall during zoom out if the situation is inside close quarters. Anyway, I am not a graphics expert, the implementation of a zoom out control and transparent wall may not be feasible in this game engine. Maybe, transparent walls don't fit the cinematic style of the game. However, "to me", the camera angle issues fail to do a dent on this game technical achievement. I haven't seen any other game doing these kinds of technical feats. Anyway, certainly there are tons of people out there appreciate the flashy graphics of Uncharted more than these subtle technical feats in The Last Guardian.

*SPOILERS* Having just completed it, and being a huge fan of shadow of the colossus, I think the 5 star rating is a bit much... Maybe 4 or even 4.5 but there's no way a game that has such an inconsistent frame rate and poor camera controls should get a perfect score. I know its your scoring system so you can give it whatever (and I still respect Bloodworth's opinion) but, to me, 5 stars means the game is perfect or a masterpiece and there is no way to improve upon it. I can think of several improvements and came across many points in the game where I thought "this is getting really tedious". Take one of the puzzles near the end (opening the ceiling), that has to be one of the worst designed puzzles ever and it doesn't even take much brain power. In fact, finding the room takes more skill than completing the puzzle! Anyways I hope this rant hasn't come across as rude or anything, I still love EZA and all of your content xD *SPOILERS*

Quite paradoxically, in this context, a "10" should mean that the very rating system itself is, in this case, "meaningless". It means that not every game is "a mere sum of its technically constitutive parts"; that a deeply flawed game in a technical stance can still be a brilliant masterpiece of an overall experience, leaving us with an ever-lasting artistic impression (a game that comes to mind? Sega's Shenmue, for instance - much greater an experience than the mere sum of its constitutive technical parts). In this way, what this "10 out of 10" tries to express is its own inability to be consistent as an all-inclusive rating system, and the only way to somehow "save" its relevance is precisely by subverting its very ordinary application - as a merely individual technical calculator, telling us about graphics, gameplay, story and what not. This game deserves a 10 because "it subverts what it means to be a great game". It's the intangible "spirit" of the overall experience what really matters here.

I always love the reviews you guys have put out, I am actually just finding this site after the whole GT thing.... have to say i am a bit disappointed that there was a score at the end of the review. Feels like such a hold over. Keep up the great writing and the narrator is top notch.

Having only played the Demo for Shadows of the Colossus on a friend's ps2 many years ago, playing the first few hours of Last Guardian has been so far a very unique and memorable experiance; first time in a game I've ever felt like I'm interacting with a living creature, and I look forward to continuing my adventure with it!

First game in over 25 years of gaming that contained a moment that truly moved me. If Bloodworth felt the same I can totally understand the score, even though the game is not perfect at all. I think Jim Sterling's less positive assessment of the game is perfectly valid as well.

Jeez, calm down there guys, sometimes things are larger than the sum of its parts. Close your eyes and think of your favourite game, if you were a reviewer would you give it a 5 outta 5? Some people would and some people wouldn't (I wouldn't personally but that's a personal choice). Numbers and words =/= emotions, it's just all the language we have to try and convey our thoughts and feelings as articulate as possible (also don't chase objective reviews, they don't exist, learn a reviewers tastes and go from there. I imagine if you've been following Blood long enough you'd know most his preferences (Witcher 3 is a prime example, lot of people can't get past the mechanics of that game, also doesn't bother a whole heap of people, should be easy to see why he'd emphasize non-mechanical/non-performance traits in other games. It's not hard y'all)

This review makes me happy seeing that I never thought this game would be released. I'm so happy with the industry and the fact that you all came back together.

Thank you! Just because a game has flaws doesn't mean that it can't be great. The Last Guardian tells a story in a way no other game or any other medium has before. It's truly something to be appreciated.

Controls, camera, and performance is what ruined Shadow of the Colossus for me and I'm heartbroken that they didn't seem to make improvements to how the game plays in those 10 years.

Finished it yesterday. Truly great game! It has some flaws but the experience this game gave me is so satisfying that it outweighed all the cons.

A lot of times Trico wouldn't listen and it got so frustrating I wanted to just leave him! Then he'd make a sad sound and look at me with those eyes and all my anger drained away....until 3 mins later when he wouldn't listen to me again.

At 1:15, holy fuck, that looks like the pool of water Wander gets sucked into at the end of SOTC.

Couldn't agree more Bloodworth! Great review. I honestly think that the charm of this game is that it feels like a Team Ico PS2 game, everything from the Music, Controls, story, and the environment. It's seriously incredible. Sure the frame rate may not be the best, but that was honestly my only complaint.
